  1. Midday charts from today (GFS 06Z) until Monday, showing the movement of cold air (particularly sub 528 dam) It looks like the peak cold (and snow chance?) might be on Saturday.
  2. They don't say a huge amount tbh - fundamentally the intensity of precipitation, from what I can see, isn't shown, which is pretty important in a snow event. Blue symbols would be snow. Green dots must be rain or marginal - interesting how the north coasts of East Anglia change between the days here. The barbs tell you wind direction and force. The red dotted line indicates surface temperature (looks to be about zero C, unless I need glasses ) There's also sea level pressure indicated too.
  3. Yes, my area did very badly out of this event (or so I was told, as I was in Mauritius at the time ) and we've had better snow in every subsequent year.
  4. I thought the same Coast; the approaching trough of low pressure from the east seems to have flattened overnight. Like you say though, this is going right to the wire. Kent looks by far the most favoured currently.
  5. Typical Spring weather I'd call it. I'm pretty sure I read a while ago that April is the month with the greatest likely variability in temperature, in the UK. Also snow being more likely at Easter than Christmas (or over the last century or so) - that one is definitely a strange stat.
  6. Morning all. The temperature was 2C when I left home, but had risen briefly to 5C, when on the A12, then back to 4C on arrival at work. As I live nearer the coast, that was quite unusual. Maybe the cold air is just getting started then, from the east?
  7. I've got to say that with the prospect of appreciable snowfall currently looking slight in any one location, I'm really not looking forward to the cold, cloudy, windy spell that's about to hit, particularly with the evidently nice day that I've seen outside my work window today. Still, it shouldn't last too long and hopefully it'll become more benign next week - I would like to see snow too mind you, just not cloudy, mostly dry and very raw.
  8. From something I picked up on the model thread last night. Here is an archive chart from late January 1947. If you step forward, through the month of February, you can see a persistant Greenland high, with very frequent easterly winds and undercutting low pressures. A snow lovers paradise! I can but dream... http://www.meteociel.fr/modeles/archives/archives.php?day=29&month=1&year=1947&hour=0&map=0&mode=0
  9. Morning all. Lovely sunny day here, so far. Temperature -1C when I set off for work (later than normal today...) and 0C when I arrived 15 minutes ago.
  10. Isn't the NAE just showing the weak front passing through; the precursor to the cold weather following?
  11. When I say light snow, it might be just grains, but with the caveat mentioned.
  12. To me it looks like the most likely scenario is light snow on Saturday, for Kent, but there's always the chance of more, as Nick has said. I think more will be clear in 2 or 3 days (unfortunately)
  13. It looked a good chart for snow, looking at the temperatures and reasonably saturated air through a lot of the lower atmosphere; a long way off though.
  14. Anyway, morning all from a quiet and cloudy Alresford (not working today ) Quite benign really, before the cold later this week.
  15. Sorry CWT2012, but a fair few big snow events have been well forecast! I certainly don't remember being surprised by the amount of snow in 1987, 1991 and at other times before and since.
  16. Morning all. A sunny, but chilly start to the morning, with a frost. I’ve broken my promise, made on Friday, not to look at the models until Monday and can see that a very cold spell is about to hit us. To me the most likely outcome looks like a dry cold, with no more than coastal flurries. If this happens, then my enjoyment of the spell will depend on the amount of sunshine. Mostly sunny, crisp cold = enjoyable; cloudy, raw cold = highly unpleasant. Of course things can still change, for snow lovers, but the main charts don’t appear to be that exciting for a snowy spell, currently, imho.
  17. Evening all As it was a pretty pleasant day, I thought I’d get out and about in it, having a day off work. It was noticeable how much higher in the sky the Sun is now. Here are a few photos I took today. Enjoy your weekends!
  18. No Sacrilege. Whatever weather type you like, is your prerogative. In fact one of the things that annoys me most about this site (and mostly this occurs on the Model Thread) is when people gang up on others for their particular weather preferences - could you imagine that sort of discussion happening in a public place, away from this forum? People would be noticed and laughed at, frankly. I personally like snow events to provide long lasting cover and photo opportunities, snowy walks etc. I really don’t like snow to rain events, or snow which rapidly thaws after falling. To me these events are merely nuisance value, but, like I said, if others like this type of weather then it’s their choice.
