  1. I do like your postings normally and appreciate your research, but really, this posting strikes me as being a bit obsessional. I think most of us know it was cold in mid January and it was memorable in the context of 1992 to 2008, but dear oh dear! The snow events of New Year 78/79 and mid Feb 79, as well as the blizzard in the southwest in 1978, immediately spring to mind as not being included in your list (I know you're talking about cold weather, rather than snow, but snow is what most people remember in terms of a cold outbreak - most people have forgotten about February 1986, even though it was the coldest calendar month in my lifetime) I'm also not disparaging research and predictions by people like Chionomaniac ( I can see an argument has developed between himself and other posters, but I'm not going to look back through the postings on previous pages, as I've better things to do / life’s too short etc.), as I gained a lot of credibility in my local pub by suggesting the likelihood of snow, two weeks before the event of 20th January here, with my thoughts gleaned from posters in the Strat thread etc.
  2. Just home from the pub. I've put BBC1 on to see a fat, unfunny comic, with a squeaky voice, starring in a vampire film I've not heard of. Kind of unpleasant really. Will catch up on weather / snow forecast postings methinks.
  3. Have you killed this thread? Anyway, a sunny spells sort of afternoon here now.
  4. I guess you're referring to the Wednesday 6th Feb at 18:00 chart that John posted? It's not NAE, as that is a hi res, 48 hour model. It looks like a GFS chart to me. In any case it's a long way off yet.
  5. Raining here. Loads of standing water in the fields around. No matter, it's Friday!! I'll be sitting in the away end at Portsmouth FC tomorrow afternoon, undoubtedly freezing to death. I have to ask myself whether I'm a proper mug at times! I hope you all have a better weekend.
  6. A nice sunny afternoon here. It's quite a nice thought to me that the sun is still pretty evident, compared to even a couple of weeks ago; a reminder that the commute in darkness will soon be over Here is a link for sunrise / sunset times, which I quite like. http://www.good-stuff.co.uk/suntimes/
  7. I guess JP's looking at the proximity of 528 DAM air to us, meaning a snow possibility. Especially with weather fronts in the vicinity.
  8. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it for sure. That GFS chart looks very windy for where I live too and the rear flank of the low is now showing for Friday evening, rather than Saturday morning, which seemed to be the case yesterday.
  9. It looks like the low might track further south than earlier anticipated and there wouldn't be such a strong winds issue in that case. It would likely mean a few unknown random people will be alive at lunchtime on Saturday, who would otherwise have been killed by falling trees etc. - the fickle hand of fate.
  10. Morning all. A breezy, fairly mild, but otherwise non-descript start to the day here. I guess the model thread is worth staying away from then? Sounds like a good call at least 50% of the time anyway.
  11. Looks like that would provide coastal flooding to me. The tides would still be relatively high (highest tides are tomorrow, I think, in the current cycle) and a mean 60mph north wind north of Norfolk could cause issues there (and further down the North Sea Coast too) as well as the earlier problems you might face further south.
  12. Maybe it'll end up being like this event. I remember it from early childhood. Actually I shouldn't ramp something like that chart, which provided probably the most powerful gale over East Anglia in the last 50 years. Winds gusted to 100mph in Norwich (low lying and inland so very impressive) and higher on the north Norfolk Coast. There's a small item about it on the 'Wind' tab here. Anything like that would be very nasty and thankfully the charts I've seen are nothing like as bad as that. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/ee/
  13. I see the Met Office warning for Friday is in the low probability / high impact zone. Makes sense for the moment.
  14. Here's another from Saturday morning. A vicious north / northeasterly gale could ensue. Still FI to a degree with this though imho.
  15. I see what you mean! That would be a proper winter storm. Here is another chart from GFS... And hello again, those south of the Thames.
  16. I see the NMM is going for 60 mph gusts where I live, near the coast, at 6ish this evening. Not particularly noteworthy for winter, but very blowy nonetheless.
  17. Morning all. An earlier sunny and frosty (1C) start has given way to cloud. Potentially interesting weather coming then.
  18. The snow has completely thawed here, so I'm happy. Like I've said previously, I like snow, but hate slow thaw. Personally I'm happy with the change, as the great majority of the population is, away from these pages. The fear that elderly people can have of cold weather should always be borne in mind imho - it's a fine balance... 12C in winter is fine by me, as I'll turn my heating off.
  19. Another thing, my pub credibility is pretty high at the moment. I said to the regulars that there was a reasonable chance of snow in a couple of weeks, three weeks ago... A lot of my opinion was gleaned from posters on this forum though. They also asked my opinion on whether they'd have problems driving this morning, in my area, due to the snow forecast they'd seen. I said to them 'no problems guys, it'll all be a damp squib here imo' My credibility will be sky high now! The roads are good here too thankfully - I thought there might have been problems with freezing rain, but no such worries.
  20. According to my car, the temperature is rising, so really unlikely now. Anyway, I now want it to get mild as quickly as possible to clear all the snow. Once a thaw is properly underway, I want it out of the way quickly. I really don't like slush / messy snow and a thaw is one of my worst weather types.
  21. Morning all. Still sleety rain here. I'm looking forward to the milder weather, to give my boiler a break, if nothing else. Hopefully a nice sunny Saturday will soon follow. Have a good one.
