Its just not fair for Sussex, my daughter who lives in Sweden, left Gatwick this afternoon in pouring rain and temp of 10C and just 3 hours later arrived home near Uppsala to snow and -10C.

     C

well on the up side you at least have the opportunity to go and stay with your daughter with free board and lodging whenever you please, which is more than I can do and am stuck in this dire weather.

  2. This winter is really starting to annoy me now.  the thought of yet another mild soggy winter fills me with despair.  Yes I know there are those who keep saying it is only the beginning of winter but after 2 months of this dismal depressing atlantic weather and with no end in sight, it hardly fills you with hope.  I am sure that true to UK weather form we shall have the 'winter' weather come the spring....when we don't want it and it is no good to anyone.  Very fed up at the moment to say the least.

Only plus point over the next couple of days is I will be so busy with work I won't really notice these mild temperatures, I couldn't care less about them  as they are not what Ian looking for in the winter months. Come on coldies think how sweet it will be when we do get cold and snow,it will be all worth it if we get a good easterly in Jan/Feb then this mild dross will be a distant memory.

yes and that cold will probably occur in June when its no good to anyone.  this country's weather really does suck.

?? I never suggested otherwise and most of my post was discussing meteorology about the weekend?

I love this from our professionals for 2 days ahead and you lot are worryning about the run up to Christmas!

This development is associated with a high degree of uncertainty, especially regarding the track and timing of the depression, and this alert will be kept under review.

They are talking of the track the low MAY take Saturday

this link shows where their current thinking is

    http://www.weathercharts.org/ukmomslp.htm#t72

sure is an interesting time for model watching in the nearer time frames.

One can only hope it stays south of mid Lancashire, several thousand folk will feel the same. It is hard to comprehend the awful situation so many of them will be in for many months to come.

Looking at the 06Z GFS and they take it well north over the area that least needs it, so hopefully the idea from UK Met for further south turns out to be correct. Even by this time tomorrow I suspect there will still be uncertainty.

I do feel for those people who are suffering from the torrential rainfall and flooding in those areas, especially Cumbria, but at the same time they do live in these areas which are renowned for extremely high rainfall so it really shouldn't come as too much of a shock when these things happen...as terrible as they are.

Something incredibly depressing at looking at my weather app on my phone and seeing double digit temps for the foreseeable future.

regarding seasons, i've started thinking about it like this -

    Dec - Feb (Winter),

    March - April (Spring)

    May - July (Summer)

    August - November (Autumn)

or just Autumn all the time.

    I'm going with perpetual Autumn

I'm not a coldie by any stretch of the imagination, but this is just ridiculous. I can't believe Christmas is just 2 weeks away and its almost warm enough to go out in a t-shirt:/

For me down here, 2015 has just been one big perpetual Autumn. Absolutely atrocious year devoid of any interesting weather bar about 3 days overall. I was hoping for a cold/snowy winter to break the monotony and chain of wet/windy/mild winters but no sign of that until at least January. We all know the synoptics we all want will come along in April when its too late to really tap into long-lived cold and when everyone is looking for heat/storms.

    Dross.

it really it nothing like I have experienced to be honest.  a few nights ago I was outside with just a short sleeved shirt on at midnight and it felt as mild as a normal summer evening.  very scary indeed.

From the seasonal forecasts I've read (including Netweather's) winter is, thus far, proceeding exactly as predicted so no cause for despondency yet in my opinion.

It was always likely that a proper cold spell (assuming we get one) will materialise later on and if this happens some time during January/early February as per the NW Forecast that will be fine by me.

Saying this, in April 2008 we had a blanket of now right down to Eastbourne sea front so plenty of time left yet!

God I hope not. snow in April is not worth it as it only stays around for a few hours in the morning before the strong sun melts it.  What's the point.  The UK weather is so topsy turvy.  Cool weather in summer and mild weather in winter.  Unless we have the occasional 'freak' spells.

a completely mild winter cannot be ruled out. they do happen. it wouldnt surprise me that sooner or later we will get a record breaking mild one.

the anomaly charts give no hope at all in the next 2 weeks of any sustained cold, its looking average at worse (or coldest) with the possibility of some very mild days.

but theres plenty of time for this pattern to break, the point is that when theres a sceuro high, that could easily migrate northwards and take up residence over scandinavia.

in the East Midlands the last 2 years have been mild winters more or less completely so if this winter is mild too then that's 3 on the trot.  I don't think I can take anymore.

  9. Really starting to hate this winter now.  just a constant rinse and repeat scenario reminiscent of the winter of 2013.  To anyone who says our weather is fascinating because its so unpredictable is wrong, its not unpredictable, I can guarantee that any year we will have heavy rains and winds and mild temperatures.  that is not unpredicatability in my book.

  10. how are some people saying the current very mild temperatures we are experiencing are 'classic El Nino, when the following is said on wikipedia:-

El Niño's effects on Europe appear to be strongest in winter. Recent evidence indicates that El Niño causes a colder, drier winter in Northern Europe and a milder, wetter winter in Southern Europe.[29] The El Niño winter of 2009/10 was extremely cold in Northern Europe

  11. The majority of the UK is not like Cornwall's snowless climate. Snow is not unusual. Please, come on...

I agree.  the usual amount of lying snow in somewhere, say the Midlands, should be between 10-20 days per year, so those who say its to be expected in the mild UK not to get 'any' snow is talking rubbish.  Yes, of course we have occasional winters that produce little if any snow, but they should not be considered the norm by any means.

  12. Sorry gents.   Put it down to a bit of despondency and an instinct which is probably well wide of the mark.  I just wondered whether the "no more snow in lowland B ritain" stuff, overhyped as it was at the time, might have had a degree of truth behind it?

I doubt it.  If Jerusalem can get snow, then I'm sure lowland Britain will continue to get it too, albeit more sporadically, in the coming years if global warming continues.

  13. If it wasn't for the snow on the morning of 22nd December 2010 when we had a few inches maybe even a foot (can't remember the exact depth), the December 2010 cold spell wouldn't have been so great here either. In fact the snow that morning was probably the deepest snow round here since possibly February 1991, or at least 1996. People elsewhere go on about 18th December 2010, but despite snowing all day left only a fairly thin covering round here, possibly half an inch like you say. The 22nd made up for it though but being as the snow on that date isn't as famous as the snow of four days before it must have been much more localised. Then again we always seem to do better with these surprise events than we do with the more hyped up and forecast well in advance events round here for some reason.

Anyway I'm not overly bothered by this weekends event really, and just think if we do get anything it'll be a nice bonus. I'm going to wait till winter proper (1st December-29th February) to let my snow cravings really take hold. I think it'll be nice to just get a frost at this stage, something that's been lacking so far this Autumn.

yes I too think that were it not for the snowfall of a few inches on 20th Dec 2010 then this particular year that everyone keeps going on about was not particularly amazing for us in the east midlands either.  I suppose it was more noticeable for the cold rather than the amount of snow.  I have seen far better snowfalls in 2009 and early 2010.

  14. No thanks.

I wouldnt say no to a repeat of last winter either... snowfall on boxing day that lasted 7 days then a cold snowy end to Jan.. a few more days with snow falling in Feb and at the end of March.... maybe a bit more prolonged cold would make it better but last years cold zonal was not to bad for me...

last winter was dire for us in the east midlands.  one evening of temporary snowfall and a few frosty morning does not, in my books, make a proper winter.  I pray there isn't a repeat this winter...or worse.

  15. What's interesting is the Halloween record prior to last year was about 21C I believe, set quite a few years ago (not sure of the actual year). It's quite amazing to think that it could be bettered 2 years on the trot.

How depressing imo, another stupidly mild halloween this yr though of course not on par with last yr.  Halloween to me is

about the coming of winter and in some way should have a certain winter is coming feel to it, not this ott mild crap that looks likely.

i agree, a mild Halloween is not something I get excited about.  why the hell does this island do everything topsy turvy?  cool in summer and mild come the winter.  yes I know we're an island in the atlantic, gulf stream, etc.  Still frustrates me though.

  16. well after my initial optimistic outlook for summer 2015 it really has turned into one of the most depressing summers I can remember.  No real extended hot spells, no regular sunshine just the odd very warm sunny day and then days of cool and cloud.  Rinse and repeat.  I for one will be glad to see the end of this summer now although I am not holding my breath for an interesting winter either.  But who knows, I could be pleasantly surprised.

  17. pathetic british weather as usual.  we go through winter with no significant cold weather and then when Spring arrives and we want some warmth suddenly the weather turns chilly.  Maybe we should think about changing the seasons around in Britain as it really doesn't seem to want to play the game when it comes to the type of weather we should be getting in the different seasons.  We can't win.

  18. I checked the US news last night and couldn't believe that Boston is having more snow, they've had 6ft...!! since the start of the month, it's thier snowiest February on record...and we're only half way through the month...!! in the good old days when the Jet-stream behaved itself we used to get similar weather to the US a couple of weeks later...not any more...

personally I think the eastern seaboard of the US has been particularly selfish again this year :)     although I'm sure they are as sick with having too much snow as we are having so little or non.
