I think I agree with you, WB...Away from major towns, I've seen sleet (in the form of ready-made slush!) settle, on wet ground; whereas, at other times (usually within large conurbations?) snow that fell on dry ground has not...

As you say, given the right ambient conditions (ground temp, DB and WB temps) falling snow will have no option but to settle...The melting point of ice is pretty constant??:cold-emoji:

snow call fall in temperatures up to 7c but tends to settle only when temperatures are 3c or less.  Likewise rain can still fall when the temperature is less than 3c too, albeit icy rain.

I've nothing to back this up, other than instinct, but I think you may be pleasantly surprised.

I'd also completely back the previous post in that  I've been amazed in the past to see snow suddenly start settling on wet surfaces as soon as other conditions become favourable.

i have seen snow settling on very wet surfaces after hours of rain before it turns to snow and I'm always amazed at how snow starts to stick on wet surfaces if it comes down heavy enough and the temp and dew points fall.  you wouldn't think it is possible until you actually see it happening.  This has happened lots of times in Northampton the past few years.

Considering we have endured the similar weather patterns since beginning of December, a change will happen but the question is when and whether it is in our favour in terms of producing snow.  Gut feeling is that this winter will be snowless like the many that have preceded - too many false dawns.  However, this year is particular disappointing due to the positive factors in November ...

and I fear the cold will suddenly make an appearance come April and May, precisely when it is too late and we don't want it.  It's almost as if the UK is cursed when it comes to cold and snow.  Yes we are on an island in the warming gulf stream but it would be nice to have at least one or two semi decent winters every decade or so rather than 2 every 100 years.

Fits in nicely with the timeline of a failed winter.

First comes the hype in either October or November..this winter begins with talk of "front loaded winter", which failed to materialise. Once we reach January then the talk turns to "it's only January...plenty of winter left"...or when things looks really lousy, describe transient cold shots as better than nothing. Jam tomorrow charts at Day 10 dominate the forum...none of them however come within 168 hours of fruition...The clock meanwhile ticks on.  January passes into February...another snowless month away from high ground in Scotland...."February can be the coldest month of the winter' the optimists cry. More time goes by...the Spring flowers are out..February fails to deliver...another snowless winter...the cries of "remember March 2013" begin to pipe up...

    And on it goes....

yes this can safely be described as a typical British winter.  in other words......boring dross of weather.

  5. i wonder why some people remain interested in model watching only to get disappointed when they don't come to fruition.  I hate the british winters, they are predominantly mild and snowless most years and we cannot even seem to get a few days of cold and snow these days.  i have given up even listening to what the models say now and just take each day as it comes....which undoubtedly will be the usual autumnal weather which we now seem to get throughout the year.  No distinct seasons whatsoever.

It's because we have a temperate climate and the weather is pretty easy to predict on a broad scale, The difficulty in this country is the predication of snow at the longer term, and we don't seem to be that much further forward in doing that.

The models continue to look poor for any white stuff and with the PV cranking up the chance of and extended proper cold spell is waning fast. We may need until Winter's end when the PV powers down for that.

I predict the coming years UK weather will be unsettled and with days of sunshine and days of rain.  it will also be cool days and warm days.  that's the UK forecast.  who needs multi million pound supercomputers in this country.

IDO and Knocker will be right more than 90% of the time and you can't blame them for ramping mild, it's the default setting for the uk. What gets my goat is the computers and the so called professionalls that report a high possibility of northern blocking and cold when in reality it just does not happen. I'm a coldie and wish for cold and snowy weather but get so fed up with having to pay taxes to an organisation that lets be honest, for all the millions spent on super computers cannot predict further than 5 days ahead!! ! Rant over and sorry if I have offended.

I agree. what the point of multi million pound computers when they can hardly predict even a few days in advance.  might as well just use a pine cone.

    Lol.

You just have to laugh really.

A large swath' of Europe has the freezer door open on it. While we sit in the triangle of' nothingness!

Its looking atm' like a stagnant situ with at best some minor inflow of continental air at times....

However still some resolve' perhaps of better synoptics' going forwards.

are you really surprised, we, in the UK have been stuck in a perpetual Autumn now for the past few years (both in summer and winter alike).

We will always get a handle of forecasts out to 5 days but after that its guess work . Several days back I saw temps forecast for MBY on a particular day  for 6-7c it got no higher than 2.8c , quite a difference . I would like to see other forecasters from around the globe try predicting our weather .................it aint easy.

We clearly need so many things to come together to give us a decent winters spell . Low solar activity - Snow cover in October is talked about , QBO's , SSW 's and more , but in want order do they need to come together,  timing is the key ................ its easier to win the bloody lottery

I have more chance of winning the lottery than I have all of these synoptics to come together

Just had the most fantastic drive up from London to Sheffield, every possible weather you could imagine, cloud formations were breath taking at some points,45min drive through driving snow at the end of april did feel a bit strange i must admit. Hugely enjoyable, really showed what proper weather can be like, sadly so often missing in the uk.

just a pity we don't get this cold set up when we want it (ie. winter).  such rubbishy weather at the wrong times of the year in this country.

Really looking forward to the lovely Arctic air next week, good weather to be out and about in, even though this week has been fresh and not warm, colder weather is always welcome. :D

A real lack of any warmth this Spring, sorry but 13C/14C max's 4C mins widely isn't warm when the days are as long as August, this would be a cold spell then.

I agree, the UK weather seems to be perpetual Autumn throughout the year these past few years.  Horrible.

  12. so there is a potent cold snap coming up in the next week or so, with the chance of snow falling (and accumulating) quite widely in the UK.  why the hell didn't this happen during the actual winter months rather than so late when it actually in something no one wants now?  Typical British weather.  It never does what you want when you want it.  I love snow but even I don't want to see it this late in the season.  I want the warmth now.  Winter had its chance and blew it big time this year.

  13. I'm throwing in the towel now as far as this winter is concerned.  It's been utter tripe and can't wait to see the back of it now.  Even easterly winds can't give us the cold we so deserve.  I just hope next winter isn't as bad as this one (surely it cant be?).  I just hope we get some decent summer weather to make up for the last few months (although saying that knowing the UK weather, we will probably have the coldest summer in 100 years.lol

think I am getting to the stage now where Summer is my favourite season, Everyone I know, knows winters are getting milder and less snowy on average over the last 15 or so years, think most do on here aswell but don't admit it

i hate to admit it but i think you are right.  okay even our summers arent great or reliable but at least we can be almost assured that we will get some hot sunny days whereas winter cannot even muster a few snow days now.

not sure if its worse here, had kind of 3 lots of lying snow! 20th Nov, 15th and 16-17th Jan, Feb though will be snowless

we have had 1 day of lying snow which is more than most have had but is quite frankly ridiculous, even for the UK's mild winters.  we used to have an average of 10 days lying snow but this seems to have reduced to 1 or 2 at best most winters now.  i used to look forward to winter but now i am starting to dread them as all we end up with is gales and cold rain/sleet.  i hate it.

  16. this winter has been total 'pants' and must be one of the worst monotonously boring winters since (or even surpassing) 2013 and thats saying something.  i can't even bring myself to look forward to next winter now if this is the way our winters are going.  utter dross.
