  1. Well If we want the cold then better take a trip to Toronto, Canada as -17c at the moment with a wind chill of -31c. Friends tell me that it a bank holiday weekend over there and they are staying inside as on Sunday they are being told the temp will be around -21c with a massive wind chill!!!

    Oh well it posted twice!!

would love to take this trip but I don't think my savings of a few pounds will be enough, do you?

  2. was snowing lightly in Northampton around 7 this morning and Leighton Buzzard area 30 miles to the south had a fairly decent covering and still lightly snowing at 8am.  Looks like these areas will have light snow on and off for the next few hours.

  3. I wonder if Northampton will cop anything tomorrow then?  most of the snowfall this year has been too marginal and I'm not convinced that this latest event will be much different.  I could be wrong.  I just wish the weather could be a little more predictive as I commute to London each day and it can be difficult to know whether to go to work if it starts snowing in the morning or to leave work early if it starts snowing later on.  You just never know whether its going to snow a lot or a little or even if its going to settle or not.  Impossible to make decisions when the forecasts are so changeable.

  4. Come on guys,

    All this negativity..

This weather type can be classified as rather cold to cold category for temperatures.

I am beginning to wonder if the cold of Dec 2010 and also March 3013, have changed peoples perceprions of the UK weather. Guys, those events were 1 in 100 years and 1 in fifty year events. They do not happen every year or even every other year by definition.

The CET temperature over the last week has been about 1.0C. (average about 4-5 max and -1 to -3C minimum). This would clasify as quite a reasonable cold spell even in the 60 and 70's.

Let us remember that we live in the British Isles not Iceland or Scandinavia.

This weather has been respectable for most who do not expect a raging blizzard every other day.

Fo information I have now recorded 8 days with snow falling since Jan 10th.

Current temperature 6.4C (IN THE SUN) and now an actual temperature of 4.7C, probably the max for the day.

Live for the present... the next snowfall could be this afternoon, or evening or tomorrow.

    MIA

I agree with you that this winter has been on the cold side, however the snow events have been marginal and even compared to past 'mildish' winters at least we seemed to have a few days of lying snow whereas this year in the east midlands we have been lucky if we even had lying snow and then if it lasted a few hours.  I wouldn't call this an cold or average winter by a long shot.  As for raging blizzards, I would be happy with a few hours of heavy snow so not really asking for a lot I don't think.

  5. Yes it feels cold but it has been a poor cold spell for most.

Snow melts in minutes and most haven't seen any decent lying snow.

From my point of view this winter has been poor so far and I cant see it getting

any better, snow wise. I hope I am wrong!

I will agree with you totally on that.  yes it has been cold this winter generally but the snowfall amounts and regularity have been nowhere near as high as in the past 8 years here.  even when the snow has been lying on the ground it has melted within a few hours whereas in previous years it stayed on the ground for several days in Northampton.  So all in all quite a poor winter in my eyes too.

  6. I suggest we all move to the east midlands, im sick of the snow starved west midlands, especially telford where it never snows! :/

the east midlands isn't that great either believe me.  yes we had snow the other evening but I had all melted by midday the next day.  I suppose we do get some cold weather but we have much less precipitation as we're in the east.

  7. It keeps promising to stop but now been snowing continuously since 7.15pm!

the moon has poked its head out now so I guess the current snow is coming to an end but I think thoughout the night we may see a few more showers and hopefully thoughout tomorrow.  I think its a snow day for me rather than trying to commute into London and back.

  8. to be honest I don't think they really know what is going to happen even a few hours before.  the 'bitter' cold they were forecasting for the weekend and early next week don't seem to be materialising to be as low as originally predicted.  I don't regard a low of -1 as being that cold to be honest considering we are still in winter.  a daytime high of 4c is hardly worth warning of either.

  9. Nice surprise to see snow in Northampton yesterday and overnight.  had a decent covering this morning and very icy side roads and pavements.  our first snowfall for 2 years so was happy to see it once again.  At least when we do tend to get a snow covering it stays around for a few days rather than thawing after a few hours so that is nice too.  Looking forward to maybe another snow event early next week I hope.

  10. Then when people do move away, we will see the likes of 1987 and 62/63 happen with East Anglia and Southeast being cut off!

Patience folks, I'm sure you will see some snow by the time February is out!

COAB! We're on day 1 of what is potentially a week-long cold snap and we're not even into what is traditionally the snowiest month of the year. Let's get some perspective please? Really bad winters are very rare in this country, cold snaps are more usual and that is what we're getting. If you want snowdrifts, white-outs, 14 ice days on the bounce, lake-effect blizzards and the guarantee of snow every winter can I respectfully suggest you try living somewhere other than "Southeast England and East Anglia".

I dread to think how some of you will cope when a real life crisis hits you.

I can understand some folks getting frustrated especially if snow is such a big deal to them.  I think your suggestion of moving somewhere else is a little harsh though.  I would love to live in Canada or the United States but unless you are a millionaire or have a work permit then they won't even look at you, so not as easy as that I'm afraid.  If it was I would move there tomorrow.

  11. commuting back from London yesterday afternoon was slightly weird.  It is quite usual to not have snow in London itself but to hit the snowline about 30 miles north but yesterday I didn't hit the snow belt until literally 5 miles from Northampton then it went from green to white almost instantly.  People wouldn't believe how weather could change in such a short distance.  We had quite a covering in Northampton and more overnight.  this morning was a bit of a challenge getting into work though.

  12. Northants snow famine continues rain falling with a dewpoint of 0.4c and temp of 3.9c

Northampton really is dire.  everyone seems to have had at least something this year, but here we haven't seen anything for over 2 years now.  pathetic.
