South West/Central Southern England Regional Discussion 16/01/13 22z ----->
SNOW CRYSTAL replied to A.J's topic in Regional
Hi BM4PM as Barry says things are looking marginal for Plymouth but it looks as though things have moved very slightly SW since last night. I dont want to give you false hope but things change from hour to hour in these situations. See what the other more experienced posters have to say.- 746 replies

SNOW CRYSTAL replied to A.J's topic in Regional
Evening all, i haven't had much chance to look at the forum today, starting to wish i hadnt bothered. There are many things I love about Devon but the lack of snow isn't one of them. As it's looking very possible that the far SW will miss out again, can anybody tell me if they can see any silver linings waiting for us in FI? Can't quite understand from the MOD thread where we may be heading after this weekend. The more shots we get at this the better. I'm still happy that some of you are still in with a chance, would't want the SE to hog all the snow. -

Well if it's stopped at Princetown, I may as well get some sleep. Here's hoping you all wake to a dusting at least. -

Hi Kiwi, I have young children too, and after a couple of years of radar watching, I now play down any mention of snow to family and friends. It spares you having to listen to others saying I told you so. I now tell them snow could happen, but it's very difficult to forecast where and when it will fall. They seem to go away happy!! Anyway hope you get some soon. South Dartmoor hasn't seen snow since Dec 2010, so I'm keeping fingers crossed this week. -
Wow, great to see some of you have got some snow. Here's hoping it improves as the week goes on. Chucking it down with cold rain here on South Dartmoor!!

Drove to Tavistock this morning and looking towards Cornwall, Kit Hill, which is between Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor definately had a white peak this morning. It's 330m asl and it was above the mist and fog and my husband confirmed that it wasn't a mirage, definately white. From 10 miles away I doubt we'd notice if it was frost, so was it hail, sleet or snow I wonder. Not sure, heading in the right direction though.

Winter Model Discussion 12Z 09/01/13> The hunt for cold ?
SNOW CRYSTAL replied to Coast's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Love it Jimben. I can't read the charts too well yet and would really like to learn from the experience of others, but how does a beginner differentiate between a well thought out post and those only seeing what they'd like to see? Perhaps more backup info from the one liners. Seems like choosing a car to me. Most people think that their idea of the best car is right, but different people have different priorities. -
Hi Beast of Dartmoor and welcome. Nice to see another fellow on the moor. Rowieboyz is the only other member I know of now that Dartmoor Matt no longer posts (does anybody know if he's still around or moved to a snowier place?). Anyway, here's hoping you get some snow in the next few weeks, to make all the model watching worth while. If you do make it to the top of the mast with the temps that are predicted next week, you're a braver man than me, I'll be waving at your from the Foxes Tor Cafe!!!!

Hiya I have very limited knowledge of models and their likely outcomes, so could someone please give me a biginners description of an outlier, a short wave and a toppler please? I know there's a learners area but a bit short of time at the moment and I'm sure you guys will be able to give a perfect explination!! Thanks Guys

Hi AWD thanks for all the background info. As someone who is unable to read charts but is trying to learn, it always amazes me how the output is interpreted in so many different ways. It's all very confusing. It's a great help when posters give a one liner at the end of a post, as to what they think the outcome might be, whether they turn out to be right or wrong, it helps us beginners understand what the options are. The pub run is the most confusing of all, is it drunk or sober? Posters on the MOD thread swing from bining it to framing it on the wall for posterity. Its enough to make any of us reach for the bottle!!!

I'm just happy that the charts are looking up. Even if it all goes wrong, i would still prefer a shot at some cold. Endless weeks of rain is enough to drive anybody mad and of course the results have been catastrophic for some. Cold and dry would be good, a sprinkling of snow would be great but 6" of the white stuff would be amazing!!!!

The Winter emotions and moaning thread
SNOW CRYSTAL replied to bobbydog's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I'm joining your gang PH, I havent seen a flake since Dec 2010 either. Last winter was dire. I saw a few cars travelling around with an inch or two a few weeks ago but I guess they were coming from North Dartmoor not south where I am. However, Dec 2010 was amazing here, snow and ice for 3 whole weeks. This winter has been so frustrating so far but nice to read about the possible SSW. Even if it doesn't come to anything, it's a relief to see a bit of excitement developing on the MOD thread. Us Devonians really don't need any more rain!!!- 1,075 replies

Hi Khodds I've been looking at those snow shovels too but have resisted because my hubby would think I was a total nutcase!!! However, I have bought snow suits and boots for the kids, just in case. Let's hope they're going to need them. Loving this cold weather :0)) -

Good afternoon, just to let you know that there was snow in Princetown, Dartmoor this morning at about 10.00am, just a light covering, enough to turn roads and roof tops white, don't suppose it lasted long, but its snow all the same. I'd load a picture but I don't know how. Duhhh!!! -

Hi kumquat I really hope you are right about Feb/March. Most of the far SW still haven't seen the first of this winter's snow. Being extremely interested but pretty rubbish at understanding weather patterns and models, I am willing to believe anybody's take on a cold/snowy outlook. They all sound plausible to us uneducated folk. I really hope your predictions come true.
