preventative measures - don't want kids slipping etc. I see the main front has started it's journey west. It does look like its got some speed behind it. I take it as it collides with the denser cold air it slows down?- 877 replies

I saw about 10 flakes of very small snow floating in the air in the 2 minute walk from asda to my car just now.
-
somethings brewing in the estuary...
-
nice - hopefully I can get some tomorrow...
-
tilly how did you take that amazing pic... an special equipment? I got a DSLR.
-
this is looking more promising than the feb 2012 frontal event from the north... as someone said I few posts behind this one - how come no one is talking about convective snow from the east tomorrow? is it even possible (to get snow from two different directions?)
-
jackpot for me then!

What are the pros/cons of using 850/500 hpa charts
msx999 replied to msx999's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Thank you So 850 is used predominantly to estimate temperatures and to forecast snow and 500s are to get a general overview of the pressure systems. That is useful - I just wanted to know why posters in the model thread would post one rather than the other... -

from my understanding 1mm of rain = 10mm (or 1cm) of snow (perhaps due to density)- 803 replies

Morning... Bbc been toying witht the idea of a strong easterly wind on friday... perhaps some lake effect snow then. -
the 00:45 radar update showed a more Southernly track - looks like the most intense ppn will be heading East of the M25 into Kent.
-
I maybe wrong here - but can't convection start out of the blue once the winds change to a more favourable NE direction? This will surely bulk up the small PPN which is circulating around EA/North Essex at the moment.

NW PPN should be over watford now - anyone round there see anything? London is SLAP BANG in the middle of the two sets of snow edit - Paul fair enough!

Im not a weather expert - but do have a Physics degree - im guessing the moisture would combine creating a higher density of precipitation which would equal heavier snow - i could (and probably am) wrong. edit for alex - I just used the word supercell as I've seen it used here before - I thought it meant heavier ppn (e.g purple or blue as per the raintoday radar)
