  1. Must admit I can't understand the obsession with the cold and snowy conditions - I am ready for the warm weather- to be able to get out and about and enjoy doing things - beats sitting indoors with the heating blasting not being able to get anywhere.

It takes a lot to keep me indoors - as long as it's dry, and as long as my life is not at threat, I'll be outside doing what I was intending on doing, including running in subzero temperatures in freezing fog. The weather I would be most reluctant to run in would be temperatures above 25C. I'd prefer a steady drizzle to running in such temperatures.

But that's the beauty of diversity I suppose, what a boring world it would be if everyone was exactly the same.

  3. Saying most BBQ's are loutish anti social affairs is like saying all pubs have people fighting outside them at kicking out time - sure it happens, but it isn't the norm!

The reason we love BBQ's so much in the UK is because its a rare thing in our climate. To enjoy a BBQ your guests need to be warm (and dry) enough and especially for an evening do that means some very warm weather (for most 21-22c is comfortable sitting temp assuming just indoor clothes worn). The fact that it is rare makes it more appealing and exciting especially after months only seeing your garden when you nip out to take the bins round.

In more comfortable climates outdoor eating is the norm so they don't get so worked up with the first breath of warm sunshine arrives!

You are speaking from your viewpoint - with an average high of 21C, Leeds is definitely an appropriate place for outdoor eating in summer as far as most people are concerned. It doesn't need to be totally sunny and 30 degrees to have a BBQ.

  4. Let's just remember that March is not a warm month, has never been a warm month and never will be. Why people are upset over cold weather in March I will never understand, and it appears as soon as the calendar hits 1 March, all talk of snow is abandoned, as if the weather follows calendar months to script, when in actual fact, snow in March is more likely than not, in the Midlands northwards at least - the record low is -22C, bear that in mind. Now, if it's late April and daytime temperatures are routinely 9C with cloud, I'll sympathise.

First month since December 2010 to not exceed 10C. Highest minimum was 3.6C - unusually low. smile.gif

Not too bad really, plenty of sunny days with overnight frost. But, as much as I enjoyed those very sunny days with large diurnal ranges, the 'cold spell' was more of a cool spell with little variation in temperatures and no snow to speak of (bar occasional flurries), with a stagnant blanket of cloud and very high pressure yielding 'nothingness' weather. There was a decent fall of 8 cm earlier on in the month though, which lasted (barely) into the next day before being washed away by rain, and a smaller 'dusting' the day before which didn't hang around for long.

  6. I thought that March-June 2010 was nice because it was a mostly sunny period and the June got quite warm, july 2010 however was horribly humid and dull.

Hm, July 2010 was certainly very dull here. I don't recall it being too bad though in terms of humidity, but a quick check of historical records show many days with the dew point reaching the high teens with temps in the low to mid twenties, one day even had a high of 21C and a dew point of 18C - yuck.

  7. ^^ depends on the person and environment. In my house, I find myself cooling off more often than not because it gets very stuffy here, uncomfortably so, but is rarely very cold. Good insulation I suppose, and direct exposure to the sun in my two living room windows.

  8. I don't think there are ever 'warmies', but convection lovers. Outside of winter, convection lovers definitely take over and everyone is buzzing off thunderstorms. There are people who crave high pressure and constant dryness, as well as never-ending warmth, but I think snow and thunderstorms definitely rule the roost on this forum at different times of the year, and just like you get people who solely post in winter for snow, you get the same in summer where people only post because they prefer thunderstorms.

I also think 'coldie' is an inappropriate term - most people are searching for snow, and as a direct consequence, cold weather.

  9. So when does the model forecast thread start looking for warm and sunny weather in FI rather than cold and snow?

When the chance of any snow and cold, realistically, goes out of the window? It depends on where you live - people in Eastbourne can say goodbye to winter because any snowfall into March and April is unlikely, but up here I can say with confidence that getting snow in March and April is certainly not unusual and is part of any typical spring, just as much as warm weather - probably more so actually.

By late April, any talk of snow is a tad silly but considering significant snow has fallen as late as June, who knows?
