  1. I have 1 very special storm I remember:

1st one, 26th July 2006- This is probabaly the best storm I have ever seen. The day started off on a very warm and humid note and felt very uncomfortable as the day went on and was like that Hot and sticky feel. By about mid day onwards some AcCas was starting to form and the afternoon became hotter and temperatures was actually in its 30's. By about 4pm me, my Brother and my Dad went down to ventnor for a nice walk, when we got there I looked over out to sea and it was very dark out there and there was distant rumbling going, I said to my dad i can hear thunder in the distant and he was na its not thunder as he couldn't hear it and I said it is the thunder becasue it sounded exactly like thunder and it kept doing it ever few seconds or a few minutes. Anyway after we had our walk we headed back to the car and then finally my dad gave in and said actually that is thunder and i was like I told you, unfortunatly the storm was not coming our way and then i started to lose hope if we was going to get any storms.

At about 6pm we got home and it felt very humid and muggy still but still no sign of any storms coming our way, had diner about 7:15pm and then went to the carnival which was right behind my house. As we got to the carnival it came over very dark but only gave a few spots of rain then moved on i felt disappointed becasue i thought that was it, Then we went home at about 8pm or 8:30 can't remember. We went in the house and i got told to take somet out into the Garden so i did and as i went out in the garden I heard a crackle and then rumbling and my thoughts was THUNDER!! I ran upstairs into my bedroom and with in 5 seconds of opening my window A huge CG hit to the Left of me with some loud thunder and i was WOOO bring it on, It was very dark to my east and thats where i saw the CG but that was just 1 Storm cloud, it produced quite a few beutiful CGS for about 10 minutes. Then I was hearing thunder to my south and looked that way and all I saw was this Huge Thunderstorm coming right towards me and then connected to the other storm to my east and I shouted to parents "I THINK WE ARE IN FOR A BIG SHOW". They laughed and said looks like we are not going to see you all night then considering you will be weather watching all night and I was like yup .

Anyway back to the Storm, As i said this storm from the south had connected with the storm to my east so basically we had 2 storms turn into 1 mega one, I started to see Lightning flashing to my South, East and South West. As the storm was getting closer the Lightning was becoming very frequent but there was hardly any thunder and for the first 2 hours it was just like 1 big Lightning show but the Lightning was flashing anywhere between 0.5 seconds and 5 seconds with no gaps at all and was producing the best CG's and CC'S I have ever seen with somtimes about 5 or 6 strikes all at once and next to each other. The storm was very slow moving and then after about 2 hours the Thunder started to get frequent and very loud and the thunder was constantly grumbling, crackling non stop, then the rain started but strangely was not very heavy it was more like an electrical storm with hardly much rain. This went on for about 3-4 hours and there was even spider Lightning as well and Lightning just traveling across the sky in some style. Thunder was Just shaking the whole area, My brother could not sleep with it going on and my mum was watching it with me and then my brother Joined and they was like WOW!!!

This storm will take some beating for a while from what I have seen in my life time which is only 17 years.

I probably posted this before but can't remember lol. I do have another one I remember but will post that later on today

  2. Omg this rain crazily heavy carpark is under water, rain is over torrential and I just got dared to run around the carpark topless which I just did and was msot very fun lol. Anyway jsut eased a little now :) Oh and it thundered a minute ago and this morning which made me happy when I was in worthin in my All England National Under 25's 2- Fours semi Final and Finals .

  3. The anticipation is half the fun! Talking long way off, GFS shows a plume next monday (23rd) Dreamcasting at that range I know but nice to see

    Its even drawn a picture:

    Rtavn1924.png

This would be nice even though it is so far off but it would be nice to see the last bit of summer to go off with a BANG !! :p

  4. Mine is Summer due to the fact I love hot and thundery weather as my favoruite weather has to be THUNDERSTORMS . Just can't beat a day where its hot and sticky and then during the evening and early darkness start to hear those distant deep low rumbles coming closer and closer, then it's neally over you knowing that your about to see a great lightning distant with explosive thunder, LOVE IT !!!

Winter is my second favourite due to the fact I love snow and its my 2nd favourite weather, but I also like when it goes extremely cold of a night time when temperatures get into the minuses and then you wake up to a beautiful crisp and frosty morning and it feels fresh :p.

Autumn and spring are about equal but Autumn is better by a little bit due to the fact I love Autumn gales and deep Atlantic depressions, also in Autumn we can get quite a lot of thunderstorms too off the sea as it pretty warmer than inland during Mid to late autumn I think but I have experienced loads of storms from September till December :D.

I like spring for the fact we can get heavy Thundery downpours come from the North sometimes during the April and May period and it can sometimes produce snow in early April like April 6th 2008 for example :).

So in order it goes like this Summer, Winter, Autumn and Spring.good.gif

  5. well from what looked like it was going to be a disaster last nigth from that shower and cloud we was under, just dissolved by midnight, so we went to Bembridge windmill and was the clearest I have ever seen it and it was an unbelievable night, originally we was just going to go out for 45mins from 00:15 till 1am, we stayed till 3am and saw the most amazing meteors. Some of the streaks were enormous which some lit up green and orange. At one point we saw 10 within 30 seconds but it came in spells as there would be no meteors for about a minute or 2 then they would all come at once. All in all we must of saw close to 90-100 which caught us by suprise big time.

  6. January 6th was amazing, best snowfall I ever seen, North east of the IOW got upto 34cms of snow, where I am we got up 5inches which is still a lot for here. Most of the snow was North and NE of the Isle of Wight but also central Isle of Wight got a lot too :whistling:. Would be so awsome if it happened again this winter with more of them threw the winter :D.

  7. Was a rather interesting day, around 2pm very heavy showers started coming over and then the 2nd one gave a huge bolt of lightning and big crack of thunder. At the same time it was rather frustrating that huge thunderstorms had missed by about 20 miles. Absolute amazing convection and structures along with some Mammatus which looked very cool .

  8. I certainly did enjoy reading that, a great account and glad you were successful!

I have only really chased properly once, and I got a little carried away and ended up driving around 500 miles in one day! It was so worth it though, I loved every minute of it - plus I got to see two decent thunderstorms during that day too!

Thank you for the comments :D

well all in all we done 320miles or something like that yesterday but 500 miles is alot and defianatly is worth it for 2 Thunderstorms indeed :D, I would do anything to see storms :D

  9. Hi all

I went on my first ever stormchase yesterday on the mainland and enjoyed it alot :D

Anyway we set off early in the morning at 7am to catch the 7:55am boat to lynmington and then headed west to try an intercept a cell in east devon but then it started to weaken as soon as we got close to it. We stopped off to check radar and decided to head North towards towards Somerset or NW Hampshire area as we noticed a line of cells was starting to fire up. It was about 1pm/ 1:30pm we stopped of in Salisbury I think to stretch and check the radar and was unsure of what to do, little did we now that a storm was developing right above us. We stayed for about 30 minutes and just before we was gunna leave we notice something developing right over us and so so we drove up this little hill to see what it was. The sky looked amazing and tornadic with very very heavy rain curtan coming toward us, I said to my friend I think it could thunder you know and he was unsure but when he said that, 2 seconds later the first rumble of thunder :D

He got his lightning trigger out and set it up for a little bit and within 20/30 seconds his lightning trigger went of and more thunder went off but the lightning must of been very high in the CB.

We noticed another cell to our North I think but it looked liked an even bigger and better one, we tried to go after it and get a head of it but we couldn'y catch up with it though we did drive threw some super heavy rain for about 5 minutes. At about 2:30pm we was drving along behind the back edge of the storm but was thinking whether to call it a day or not, after a while we stopped because he needed to go to the toilet and as soon as he got out an enourmous CG came down out of nowhere really close with very loud thunder and he was like OMG!!!!. After he got back in the car drove along to a better view place and found a good spot and he got his camera and set it up in the car looking out at witht he boot open sitting with his camera and his lightning trigger. Once he set it up within 30 seconds his lightning trigger went off too quick and there was even bigger CG and gave an explosive type of thunder I have never heard before which sounded like Gun Cannons or and Atomic explosion going off. This strike was a positive CG which was unbelivable to see, rain was very heavy but we stayed for another 15 or so mins to see if another would pop up but it didnt, we checked the radar and saw everything was starting to die and so we started the drive back. As we was drivng back home and we drove about 10 miles until we noticed something to our NE exploading, an enourmous storm cloud was developing and looked spercelluler, we was too tempted to chase do we gave it ago. We drove about another 20 miles, got a round about and was weakening quickly and then both said you know what we are too tired and couldn't be bothered any more so we went home lol. Got to the 8:20pm ferry and to our west there was a double anvil which looked amazing and I have a few pictures of it but will show them later on.

All in all for my first storm chase ever properly, I thought I done alright could of been better with alot more storms and bigger but I am so happy to see those 2 or 3 small storms which very good little storms and also we saw 3 funnel clouds too. Amazing amounts of convection and I think the first storm looked better with the sky but the 2nd gave the best Thunder and Lightning. I really enjoyed and hope to go again on the next storm outbreak.

One more thing a a small thunderstorm developed on the IOW about 12pm today and was over msot of ventnor area, gave 4/5 very good CG's nice thudner and super heavy rainfall over Ventnor, Apse Heath , Shanklin etc felt very happy after that. Hope everyone enjoyed reading this

    :D

Well seeing as I am not likely to hear Thunder again until next May have to resign myself to listening to it on the Net. Thank god we dont get Hail like this in the Uk (Well once every 30yrs at this size) :wallbash:

This is from last Friday in Germany, the thunder sounds really cool on the Vid Link.

I know my location got whacked by a pretty nice Storm on 6th June 2010 and Overnight which makes it worse :wallbash: But i did not witness it due to being abroad, so my last real Thunderstorm was the Nov 14th Low Topped Tornadic Supercell in Essex.

Is it really nearly 250 days since I heard thunder in the Uk.

    What a Dump!

    Paul S

I remember this date too and that Tornadic supercell also hit us and I saw a decent funnel cloud as did others here on the IOW, I remember being at bowls snd it suddenly starting hailing like crazy and then huge booming sound outside, so I went out and to find its thundering very loud then like 10 or so seconds later extremely close CG and instant explosion along with another 6-7 strikes with all being CGS. When the storm had just cleared I went to have a look at the back of the storm and saw big funnel and as did my friends. Along with storm winds hit over 80mph, trees had been uprooted and there was also a bit of coastal flooding when my grandad drove us on the way back on sea front with waves crashing over.

  11. I have an interesting question to ask:

When do people start looking for cold in the models and also when do you stop?

Personally I start looking in mid-October (especially after the 2008 October Snow) and stop looking in mid-march.

I stop looking after the 6th April becuase of the April 6th 2008 snowfall which amazed me and gave even the IOW a good couple of inches I would love another repeat .

Anyways Im expecting a few more snowier spells this winter even though the January event was excellant here, that was the only real snow event that stood out here and okay had a day or 2 in february where there was some snow showers but didnt do much at all. A Thames streamer would most definatly be welcome :good:.

  12. I am actually starting to look forward to winter already, i never normally start to get excitied until end of september but condsidering January last winter gave the most snow ive ever seen has got me alot more interested in next winter and am wondering what suprises it will bring :)
