Building heat in western Europe could make it a thundery Bank Holiday by Dan Corbett

Building heat in western Europe could make it a thundery Bank Holiday

It has definitely been shorts weather across western Europe over the past couple of days. On Thursday the afternoon highs across parts of France and Spain were well into the 20 and 30’s Celsius. Bordeaux, France reached 28C (82F), well over 17C (63F), its normal in April, while in Zaragoza, Spain the temperature climbed to 31C (88F) well above it’s average of 23C (73F) in April.

The warmer than normal readings over western Europe have been triggered by a big ridge of high pressure sitting across southern Spain. Southerly winds have brought in warmer air from northern Africa.

All that warm air will head north and spread over the UK to make it a pleasant bank holiday weekend for many. Will it actually be a warm bank holiday across the UK? It probably sounds too good to be true and it is a bit more complicated than that.

A familiar summertime weather situation could set up this weekend over western Europe called a Spanish plume. A Spanish plume is where warm thundery air moves up from Spain and brings thunderstorms to northwest Europe. This sort of situation could happen across the UK this weekend.

A Spanish plume is actually made up with several different key ingredients.

The warm air will move across the UK in two parts. The first area of warm air will be the warm and humid air that will move in from France on Saturday. The second will be warm but drier air from the plateaus of Spain. This area of warm air from Spain will move in above the warm and humid air from France.

The final ingredient to help bring us the risk of thundery showers for the Bank holiday weekend will be a trigger moving in from the Atlantic over the weekend. This trigger will come in the form of an upper level weather disturbance that will cool the upper levels of the atmosphere and make the air across the UK more unstable. This will set the scene for possible thunderstorms across much of the UK on Sunday into Monday. Fingers crossed these storms that do develop will be scattered so we won’t see rain all the time everywhere..

Sorry if this confused you guys aswell haha I didnt mean to! smile.gif

  3. I find the biggest problem with the tremors now is that they have dropped so low that the charts have been resized. So i keep looking at it thinking, "Ooh, it's rising again", before realising the rise is very small indeed. There is definitely something stirring under Katla in my opinion but nothing more than someone sighing in their sleep at the moment. But, will that sigh wake the sleeper?

Best not im going on holiday soon and if she goes up then we could be seeing problems for a while. dry.gif

  4. Im hopeing something gets sparked off here tonight, i wouldnt mind this hot snap going out with a bang today has been the hottest of all of them.

As for france tommorow it looks good if not a little bit scary with the CAPE going to be so high.

Lets hope for that plume event early june!

  5. Temp just reached 30.3C in the sun with no breeze im cooking!!

still no clouds but id rather it be sunny without clouds if there isn't a good chance of a storm.

I was looking through the ESTOFEX archives and the last time we had a high risk was on the 26th october 2002!

    blink.gif

Hopefully this year is our year!

  6. Scouting the sky but theres not one cloud in sight and its a tiny bit hazey.

I was hopeing for some storms today but i guess ill just have to keep on waiting patience is key!

Good luck to you guys up north i hope you get some decent storms today!

  7. Late monday evening looks good for the south/south east as cape at late evening will be just under 1500 j/kg whether or not it can get tapped into is another question its a long way off and most likely going to be decreased as time goes on.

  8. Had some very heavy rainfull earlier i could hear it over my tumble dryer going, my tumble dryer is very noisey and it woke my next door neighbours baby up also had some decent flooding in the back garden! all at about 4:45 - 5pm best rainfull ive seen this year so far heres hopeing for friday! Anyone know where there predicting the best chances of seeing a thunderstorm i know its early but id like to get an idea!

  9. how crazy by now we have usually had a small thunderstorm but so far this year just one crack of thunder which was full of treble and had no bass, it was soo wimpy I want a window shaker!!!! >.> heres hopeing for some good convection this summer!!

    wallbash.gif

Most of the chances of thunderstorms this year has been way to the north or west!

and they say the south east gets the most lightning!!!!!!! pfft!

  10. I really want to go on one of the netweather storm chases i have the money its just college is getting in the way as i dont finish untill late june this year and probably in july next year. I may get too excited whilst im out there though!

    tease.gifclap.gif

Those are some really decent pictures i love number 6 with the stars i hope you really enjoyed it, i live in the south east and recently we haven't been getting all that much lightning even though we are supposed to have the uks highest lightning strike rate per sq mile, last year we had one decent storm but before that the last decent storm was in 2006 that i can remember.

We had some pretty decent sized hail on june 27th or the 29th 2009 i cant remember which day it was. Anyone know where i can get cape, li and satelite imagery from those days?

Id have to say the majority of lightning here happens after dark, between 2 and 5am. not sure if those are spanish plume events though.

  11. The end of june to mid july please dont let there be a hurricane!! im going to cancun and i noticed the yucatan peninsula was a red area for hurricanes this year aslong as im out there and hurricane decides to come rolling in im good with that but not when im about to go.

Hopefully the el nino turns up as an el nino set up tend to have less atlantic hurricanes due to moisture pushing east.

(Correct me if im wrong with the moisture commment)

  12. Wow that sounds like a cracker of a Storm, I would love to see a storm like or the one i was talking about on my first post in this thread again. That storm must of lasted for hours, do you know how many this storm went on for.

BTW Just watched your videos and that looks like a great storm as well biggrin.gif

Yeah it was awsome, i want to spend a whole summer over there. if you want to see a decent storm either go to the congo lol or florida!

It lasted for a long time but i think it was more of a cluster of storms it probably lasted till about 11 with audible thunder but lightning could be scene all night it probably started about 3pm before i had come out of the mall, It even set some trees alight in osceola, no doubt it probably kept going the next day out to sea as florida is not that wide everything gets blown off quickly. one of the days i could see a thunderstorm way off in the distance at about 8am so that must of gone on all night aswell, the only problem is the heat it really gets uncomfortable.

Buts its good fun maybe netweather should do tornado chasing during spring and then lightning chasing during the summer. that would be mega and i would pay for that!

  13. I have a couple of stories

1: This was june of last year best storm id ever seen in the UK sorry about the bad quality, my gay voice, my lack of storm knoledge and the dog all i know is i love thunderstorms!! yahoo.gif

    Part 1: http://s428.photobuc...726thunder2.flv

    Part 2: http://s428.photobuc...nt=thunder2.flv

you cant hear all of the thunder as my phone is really bad lol but there was alot! some good lightning in it though also looks like a tornado is forming. the storm started at 4:30pm and didnt finish untill 9:45pm it was carazy!

2: I was in florida in august 2009, the hottest day id ever had we got up about 9 and went to Seaworlds Aquatica at 11am we got into the wave pool and theres a jumbatron(large screen they have a football etc) displaying messages, the current weather conditions and the temperature which read 35C at 11am in the morning the wave pool had heated up aswell as the day went on and i felt like i was sweating inside the water it was horrible. so about 12ish we decided to leave as it was just getting 2 hot, why do they make floors at water parks dark?? my feet felt like they had been toasted from the floor. we had lunch and decided to go to the florida mall at about 2pm ish clouds had started to build as they do everyday in florida after 12 it seems to get very convective. The temperature by now had risen to 39C and walking across the malls parking lot was like walking the sahara desert, the humidity was a killer aswell over 80%. I love hollister and Aeropostle so i decided to drag my parents around the mall for a couple of hours!!! i brought over $200 worth of hollister stuff about $50 worth of aeropostle! at about 4/4:30 we exit the mall and to my delightment storms had built to are north and west and since storms always nearlly travel east to west in florida we were in for a treat, we drove to the wal-mart to pick up some stuff for the evening like beer etc and the whole drive there i couldnt keep my eyes of the storm that was approaching you could see the sheer edge of the storm and you could see it flattning at the top. we got out of wal-mart and it had got much closer as florida is flat as a plank of wood you can see for miles and you could almost see where the lightning was striking there where alot of cg lightning to are west and out in an open car park felt abit dangerous so i was on a mission to get bk to the car as quickly as possible lol the thunder was still quite long after the thunder at this point no more then 6 seconds. it was time for dinner we went to the ponderosa as we driving down international drive the thunderstorm came over us and one bit of lightning hit quite close that i felt the heat of it after that i closed my window as the rain had started to bucket down, we parked the car and decided to make a run for the entrance the rain had calmed a bit as we where standing under the front of the restuarant the lightning kept getting closer and closer at one point all you could hear was thunder rumbling on for about a minute there where alot of close strikes to where we were standing as international drive has alot of tall buildings but most of it was behind us and i didnt feel like running around the outside of the building to look at it because there wasnt any cover behind the building which is a shame and i didnt feel like gettting struck by lightning neither eventually my mum got bored and she dragged us inside for dinner but i didnt wanna go in lol we came out about 9 and there was still alot of lightning around but not much thunder as the humidity in florida stops the sound of the thunder from traveling too far. my balcony in my hotel room faced south so i couldnt see most of the lightning but i got up at 5am that night to go to the toilet and could still see the lightning reflecting off the ajacent building. out of the 15 days i was there 12 of them i could either hear thunder or see the lightning in the distance! although most of the storms we had werent that strong. i bet floridians get fed up of it all the time lol!!!! smile.gif
