  1. After days of quiet, a long duration C-Class flare reaching C8.3 from sunspot 1836.. It's looking like a full Halo CME, so it is almost certain that a portion of this plasma cloud will be Earth directed.

  6. Arctic Sea Ice Update: Unlikely To Break Records, But Continuing Downward Trend Aug. 23, 2013 The melting of sea ice in the Arctic is well on its way toward its annual "minimum," that time when the floating ice cap covers less of the Arctic Ocean than at any other period during the year. While the ice will continue to shrink until around mid-September, it is unlikely that this year’s summer low will break a new record. Still, this year’s melt rates are in line with the sustained decline of the Arctic ice cover observed by NASA and other satellites over the last several decades. “Even if this year ends up being the sixth- or seventh-lowest extent, what matters is that the 10 lowest extents recorded have happened during the last 10 years,†said Walt Meier, a glaciologist with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. “The long-term trend is strongly downward.†The icy cover of the Arctic Ocean was measured at 2.25 million square miles (5.83 million square kilometers) on Aug. 21. For comparison, the smallest Arctic sea ice extent on record for this date, recorded in 2012, was 1.67 million square miles (4.34 million square kilometers), and the largest recorded for this date was in 1996, when ice covered 3.16 millions square miles (8.2 million square kilometers) of the Arctic Ocean. http://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/arctic-sea-ice-update-unlikely-to-break-records-but-continuing-downward-trend/#.UhuguxucdXZ
  7. The ECMWF has the Low pushing much further South on this mornings run for the end of next week, which could give way to much cooler and unsettled conditions for the North. The run continues this theme.

  9. Yes Captain, it's slowly catching up with this mornings ECMWF run which has been showing this trend for a few days now. This evening's run will be interesting.. I wouldn't say kicking and screaming just yet ANYWEATHER..
  10. That's what happy light's are for, I know a few people that use them during winter. I keep well away from them, unless wearing sunglasses as they tend to depress me... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lifemax-Light-Portable-Simulated-Daylight/dp/B002MRS5OW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377436772&sr=8-1&keywords=happy+light

  12. TWILIGHT AURORAS: It's that time of year. As the midnight sun wanes, auroras are reappearing in Arctic skies. Sky watchers are seeing a mix of colors, twilight-blue + aurora green, that is unique to the end of northern summer: http://www.spaceweather.com/
  13. I see the ECMWF is still sticking to it's gun's for a cooler Northerly flow during the turn of the season. As pointed out a few days ago. Although the GFS has the Low further North, it would feel much cooler. We shall see..

  16. AURORA SEASON BEGINS: Around the Arctic Circle, summer is long and bright. Auroras vanish in the glow of the midnight sun. News flash: the auroras are back. "Tonight I saw the first auroras of the new season in Oulu, Finland," says Thomas Kast, who took this picture on August 22nd: POLAR STORM WARNING: Two CMEs are heading for Earth. The plasma clouds were expelled from the sun on August 20-21 by a pair of erupting magnetic filaments. NOAA forecasters expect the CMEs to arrive on August 23-24, possibly sparking geomagnetic storms around the poles. http://www.spaceweather.com/

  19. UPDATE: CME OFF-TARGET: According to NOAA analysts, a CME hurled into space by an M3-class solar flare on August 17th will probably miss Earth. However, Earth will pass through the wake of the CME after the cloud itself passes by. This could trigger polar geomagnetic storms despite the CME being off-target. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras on August 20-21. http://www.spaceweather.com/
