Forecasters said blizzards and high winds will cause rush-hour havoc — on the back of four inches of snow expected tonight.

Just the odd patch of snow still lying, Bitter wind outside, lucky im off work full of cold.

It's been a good few years since we have had a good storm here, and long overdue...

  4. Winds will increase during Thursday afternoon and evening and gusts of 60 to 70 mph could become quite widespread across Scotland, with 80 mph gusts possible over exposed coasts and hills.

Heavy rain and hill snow are likely to accompany the strengthening winds but detail this far ahead is impossible to pin down.

Early warnings from the Met Office regarding Thu/Fri.

    Blizzards for Scotland maybe..?

  5. 1739: October, Easterly wind set in heralding frosts. The beginning of another 'Big One!'.

1739-40: Severe winter, one of the worst. May have been worse than that of 1715 (?). Late December saw a severely strong Easterly gale set up, brining very cold air over the UK. Ice formed on the Thames, once again. Streets were blocked up with ice and snow, which made travelling hazardous. The Thames remained frozen over for about 8 weeks (?). Some reports said this winter was the most severe on record, with temperatures falling to -24c in early January (1995 beat this and holds the record for the coldest minima in the UK ever). The Easterly gale persisted, with snow and frost becoming an increasing hazard to all. Northerlies also started up, very strong in places, with again snow and ice. This winter can be noted as one of the most severe of all time (since records began).

  6. mmm he's changed his forecast because of a 'sausage' shaped thing on the sun... and how he can say with confidence new years day will be anomonously warm raises questions.. when was the last 'warm' new years day.. its often a cool period in the winter - will wait and see, perhaps he is foreseeing southerlies replace strong heights to the east courtesy of a low pressure out to our west becoming unstuck - this perhaps giving up the ghost as we head into new year with the cold easterlies returning.. either that or we see sinking of heights to our east southwards?

Yes, this 'magnetic sausage' has effected the S Type Flares. Which is what he has based his updated forecast on.

Lets hope he has updated all his other forecast's accordingly
