  1. The cooler Atlantic doesn't appear to be having any influence on the weather at the moment, unlike June. Has it gone now ?
  2. This exceptionally mild weather for the start of November is interesting. I've seen many a winter with cold weather in November/early December only for the rest of the winter to end up mild and wet. I do seem to remember the start of November 1978 being exceptionally mild, with a cold plunge of arctic air at the end of the month. This led to a cold but dry December, and then that exceptional cold spell over the New Year period and one of the coldest winters I can remember. ~ So you never can tell. Still, nothing cold at all on the horizon.
  3. No frost around here so far this season. It was colder late May/early June.
  4. James Madden is at it again: http://www.express.co.uk/news/weather/612369/SHOCK-CLAIM-World-is-on-brink-of-50-year-ICE-AGE-and-BRITAIN-will-bear-the-brunt
  5. Regardless of James Madden, the snow in Moscow was mentioned on the BBC lunchtime weather forecast along with some pretty impressive pics. Hopefully, this keeps up at least until late November/ early December which is only 7/8 weeks away. By that stage we should have a reasonably good idea of how winter should pan out.
  6. Yes, interestingly, Moscow has snow in their forecast this week and the BBC have mentioned it a couple of times in their long range forecasts. It seems to have come early this year. The last two winters the Atlantic has pushed well into Europe and even Scandinavia hasn't been all that cold. Here's hoping this is a sign of things to come.
  7. I'm waiting for James Madden and his predictions of a "big freeze" to appear on the front of the Daily Express. Should be any day now
  8. I'm surprised they didn't award the contract to James Madden and Exacta Weather, seriously Personally, I'll be tuning in to RTE from now on which sources it's data from Met Éireann
  9. Nights have really dropped now and it was getting dark around 8 pm this evening. Big change from mid June and the perpetual twilight we get up here. Summer as a whole has been a real stinker this year and we're really rapidly running out of time. Just over three weeks until Autumn. Hopefully, this winter wont be another mild and wet one.
  10. I've had the electric over blanket on most nights this summer Nick. Even the heat's been on quite a few times.. Early June was particularly cold.
  11. It wasn't even that good in March and April. At least the oil's really cheap at the moment and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future
  12. Yes, the South East of England looks OK but it's been truly awful here. It's rained every day this week and rain is also forecast tomorrow. Sunday looks dreadful again. I reckon this is on a par with the summer of 1985, maybe even worse. It rained for 90 days non stop that year and it didn't settle down until early October. We're slowly but surely running out of time for this summer with less than 5 weeks remaining. The charts over the next couple of weeks look poor as well. It's also been very cool here with even grass frost on some nights. When the stats are in on Saturday I reckon this will be one of the coolest and wettest Julys on record here in Northern Ireland. At least 1985 had a really good spring.
  13. Exactly the same here Me too. These last two winters have been pretty awful. The set up in March 2013 would have been great in December/January. Pity it was too late. 2011/12 Was dreadful as well. Five years is a long time to wait for a decent winter snow event. Here's hoping 2015/16 will deliver something more than James Madden's fantasy predictions.
  14. Didn't feel sunny here either and a pretty poor one for cold lovers, although there was a good snow event in the west of the province late January, but nothing here in the east of Northern Ireland. What has been pretty bad this winter is the conditions over most of Europe, even Scandinavia. Little or now snow here either, even in the east. I'm really getting fed up with this type of winter and forecasters going on and on about the jet stream along with severe cold in the US. I really do wish it would change. Still, I'll bet Net weather wished they hadn't said it would be a "cold hearted winter". It was anything but. So goodbye winter 2014/15. Here's hoping winter 2015/16 will deliver something at least a bit better.
  15. The charts over the next couple of weeks look interesting, with even the hint of a Scandinavian high and an easterly at the end of the latest runs, but it's really a bit late in the season now. Snow at this time of year doesn't really hang around for long due to the longer hours of daylight. February really is just a transitional month between winter and spring, especially the latter stages of the month.
  16. Couldn't agree more Damian. After a couple of promising winters, 2008/09, 2009/10, and late November/December 2010, we seem to be back in a consistent run of so called "modern winters". Most of Europe appears to be stuck in the rut as well.
  17. Largely snowless and frost free fairly average ? Winters have clearly become milder in the UK.
  18. I think so. The "cold hearted winter" was anything but, and there's nothing at all in the outlook either. As with last winter, the Atlantic has been far too strong. Even the rest of Europe appears to have had a pretty mild one, apart from snow in the Alps. March 2013 was really only for high ground here, and areas at sea level and along the coast really had little to shout about. To sum up this winter. December mild and wet apart from a few "coldish" days after Christmas. January much the same apart from a couple of "coldish" spells with a skiff of snow at the end of the month. February has so far been mostly dry with temperatures around normal or a little above. I do hope next year delivers something at least a little better.
  19. Charts at the end of the latest runs look interesting with high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south of the British Isles. Maybe a cold snap during the last week of February ? It'll probably all change by tomorrow morning.
  20. Highly unlikely, at least not according to the latest models. I'd say that's winter pretty much done and dusted for another season In these parts fairly poor, though not the worst I've ever seen. Hopefully, next year will be better.
  21. Looks like I'm going to have an opportunity to cut the grass sometime this week. There's been slight growth throughout the winter, and I think that really shows how mild overall it's been. A couple of skiffs of snow, but nothing to write home about, so in that respect it was slightly better than last year. I think this is the earliest I've ever needed to cut the grass in this house, and I've lived here now nearly 20 years. Charts over the next couple of weeks seem pretty benign so I can't see any more prospects of snow this winter.
  22. Indeed, 74/75 was the first snowless winter I remember and one of the mildest of the 20th century, from what I gather. As I've said on other occasions, it's been over 4 years without a decent snow event and that's a long time, even for here. This winter has been a bit better than the last one, but not by much. Overall pretty disappointing. Maybe it is something to do with global warming. By the time we get to mid to late February the sun really is getting a bit too strong for snow to lie for any length of time Long range charts for this evening are even worse than they were earlier. Like the last "cold spell" a couple of weeks ago, the charts promised a lot but really didn't deliver anything significant.
  23. Or that wintery spell after Christmas might have been 61/62 John. I seem to remember the 1946 version of great expectations being one of the big Christmas films on TV that year.
  24. I remember cold spells throughout the 60's, not just 62/63 and we nearly always got two or three snow events throughout the winter.68/69 really sticks in my memory but there were been others. Even when we had the Atlantic breaking through we still had snow preceding the rain. I seem to remember one particularly cold spell just after Christmas (might have been 63/64) when we had persistent snow flurries but nothing substantial. It was still a case of water freezing pretty quickly in the middle of the day. It's been a while since we had an easterly like that. This winter has again been pretty disappointing in general. February really is a transition month between winter and spring now. I can't see anything particularly cold on the horizon. Even Simon Keeling appears to have given up.
