  1. Fair point. On closer inspection of 500s it seems it's connected to that wave of warm air extending up from the Atlantic.
  2. There's something weird going on on the 06Z GFS run. Looking at the 850 temps I'm wondering if this could be evidence of downwards propogation of warmer air into the Troposphere? Out of nowhere a warm pool of air develops off the east coast of Greenland from +90. It then looks like it gets caught by the jet and dragged SEwards. On the other hand, I haven't had a chance to check the ensembles so it could just be GFS throwing a wobbler.
  3. Missing a closing bracket (one of these ']') at after "url".
  4. I think what may be interesting regarding this coming winter, is seeing what effect the large amount of deforestation due to the fires will have on air temps over Russia, with regards to solar heating. Anyone clued up on the effects of trees and other flora on surface temps, as opposed to scorched earth? Also, is the amount of forest burnt, enough to make any impact either way?
  5. As Paul said, I think you have summed up Denver, CO pretty well. The times I've been in the summer, it has been nicely 'hot' with its fair share of decent storms. A weak/moderate storm out there is much better than anything we get over here. I believe winters can get on the very chilly side, but so can most of the US. As with any huge landmass, extremes in temperature are to be expected.
  6. Wow! I can't believe what I've just witnessed, none of you are going to believe me! 0.2mm in the rain gauge since god knows when and it has just stopped. There's hope for this dust bowl yet.
  7. Paul, that 6th May storm was immense! One of Harry's pictures (I think) from that storm, has been framed and proudly mounted on my wall. Even if I don't see another storm this year, I'll still be satisfied from that one night haha. Just some rain around here would be nice. Gulf Stream hate campaigner, how about founding the NRC (No Rain Club)?
  8. I'm beginning to forget what rain looks like, let alone lightning. We are over 100mm of rain below average since late February! This is ridiculous, the back garden is turning yellow yet as I type, there is some moderate rain falling 10 miles away in St Albans. Why not here???? Gaaahhhhh!!! Everyting this year seems to swerve North London, even those damned snow streamers last winter. Please deliver something this week weather gods, before the Azores High fires itself up again for another roasting.
  9. Fantastic video. The inflow belt at the beginning looks like a yoyo string being wound up into that HUGE system. Great to watch when sped up.
  10. Raining here in Barnet and skies towards Enfield are looking very dark. Dew point is a sticky 16c.
  11. Just had a deluge of rain and rumble of thunder embedded. Not a patch on the US storms on tour 1 but still enough of a fix for me.
  12. I've noticed I've got some decent footage of the Mesocyclone going right over our heads in Kansas, which I'll put up soon. Also have video footage of Paul struggling to get the car moving in Arkansas as there was an RFD above us giving out some serious winds. Good 'ol American Airlines forgot how to count and overbooked my flight home from Chicago by several people.... They have been decent enough to put me up in a nice hotel, free meals, and free $500 flight vouchers. Ash permitting, I'll be going home tomorrow.
  13. Hmmm, heads are being scratched Stateside whether tour 1 will be able to get home. This Atlantic block looks to turn into a northern block so we should be alright come the weekend.
  14. What a great first chase day. 3 Supercells and one 300 mile long trough line! Due to the large dew point spread we started off with some very high cloud bases before more moisture was pumped up from the Gulf. The jet stream must have been very strong considering the speed of the storms. Gradualy the supercells formed some neat shelf cloud structures. We were even lucky enough at one point to have a mesocyclone go firing above our heads.
  15. Loading safe mode is very simple and a good way of diagnosing problems like this. All it does is load the very basic drivers which windows needs to run, so if there are any other conflicting programs which may be causing copy/paste not to work, they will not be loaded. Once you have turned your machine on, immediately start tapping your F8 key (on some machines it may be F5). Keep doing this and you should get a screen with several options, 'safe mode', 'safe mode with networking', 'safe mode with command prompt' etc. Choose the Networking one and let it load up. As it is only running in a very basic mode, the graphics may mislead you into thinking you're back in the 1990's http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif but you can still access all your files and run any programs you need. Hopefully, copy/paste should now work. If it still doesn't, it could be a specific windows component that your computer guy needs to reinstall. There are some third party options here. Sorry I cant tell you how good any of them are but Many Paste looks like it might do the job. http://www.filebuzz.com/findsoftware/Copy_And_Paste_Program/1.html John or anyone else, I'm looking for a website with GFS data for North America. Wetterzentrale is OK but doesn't have Cape/LI. Any ideas? If it has skew-ts aswell that would be great. Thanks *edit* ooops looks like they are available on NW, but I cant find where abouts.
  16. Hi John, when you say the screen clears, do you mean the icons in the folder disappear, or the whole screen actually goes blank? Just to be sure it isn't remote desktop running in the background without you knowing, press ctrl, alt ,del and click on processes tab. Sort the processes alphabetically and if you see mstsc.exe highlight it and click end process, wait about 10 seconds to check it doesn't auto restart itself and see if that has any effect (don't reboot as this will restart the mstsc process). Alternatively, and this is by no means a fix, but if you boot into 'safe mode with networking' (tap F8 when you boot up), I'd be surprised if you still get the problem. Otherwise there are many third party clipboard applications out there, some free, that you can download and use instead. Good luck mate, hopefully the PC guy on Tuesday will work his magic.
  17. John, do you use remote desktop or any remote desktop like programs such as VNC or logmein? Windows has been known to confuse itself if remote desktop is running as the clipboard is shared between both machines and can get itself in a muddle. Run this program to see if you have any identifiable problems with your clipboard and post back the results. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/temp/GetOpenClipboardWindow.zip Depending what hold it has over system processes, perhaps Kaspersky is the problem. Try to disable it temporarily and then do the copy/paste. Also, a lot of people unknowingly have two antivirus software programs installed. Just check to make sure this isn't the case as it can also cause unexpected problems. Finally make sure you are up to date with the latest windows updates. Mikel
  18. Thanks good link. All I can see are people running away from the vehicle?????
  19. That is surprising and I've never seen/heard of that happening in this country. However, soooo many people do tend to pick the worst location to stop when they hear a siren behind them, usually slap bang beside a traffic island blocking all traffic behind and forcing the emergency vehicle divert and face oncoming traffic. This can cut valuable seconds off of emergency response times. To be honest, although totally inexcusable, I think this trooper was a bit peeved at arriving at the fight once it was all over. The Police tend to have a very good relationship with Ambulance crew over here, which is always a handy thing on a Friday night when the intoxicated who aren't fit for custody need carting off to hospital.
  20. Hey Smokes. As Harry said, I'm flying AA aswell so I may be holding on to dear life on the same flight as you. Supposed to land at DFW at 5.20 from Chicago. Thinking about it, I hope that's not too late and the airport is shut due to bad weather. :s
  21. It looks like the ash is falling and settling. My car has been sitting outside my house mainly unused for the last few days. I ran my finger a few centimetres across the paintwork and look what I found! I only had it washed a few weeks ago!
  22. Isn't it normal for flights to disappear from these types of radars when over the Atlantic? Who remembers the Air France flight which went down in a severe thunderstorm last year? It was difficult to locate the wreckage as the plane can not be accurately tracked whilst over the ocean. Having said that, I'd expect the plane to be a lot closer to Cardiff by now if it is expecting to land at 20:30.
  23. The GFS 12z jet forecast for this week does not look promising for air travel over Europe. The entrance jet sits directly over Iceland for several days and flows SE over the UK and into mainland Europe. Finally into the weekend, the block over the North Atlantic gives way and SW'erlys come cascading into Europe. The question is, will the airlines be patient enough to wait until then? I doubt it.
  24. That does look odd. Perhaps its glare in the camera lens from reflection from the ice???
