  1. hi all we have a proper depth of snow at last. About 3 inches and nice big length showers. Watching the next one sitting millimetres off the coast. taking an age to get here, hopefully take as long to pass over! So a nice end to an overall poor snow-wise spell for here. I was very close to writing an email to the snow weather god to complain. Someone from Aberdeen had clearly p1$$ed in his cornflakes. Though I have had snow in back garden for 10 days now so cant complain, and it has been an easterly/southerly tilt so the longest sea fetch for east coast here, with no barriers. When it kicked off at the start with SE, or even SSE then we were actually fine - a new experiences for me here, due to the psedo distance we had from the sea. But as I say overall I cant complain, and am not, honest! But then you see some of the reports on here and get a bit of the greem eyed monster!! even 20 mins from here and you are in waist deep snow drifts. Bring on the northerlies!! 2 weeks of model (weather) hibernation for me I think (yeah, right!!).
  2. Hi everyone. Busy day not been online at all - boo to work. Just trying to catch up with events but seems some have done very well, some wondering what all the fuss is about (like me!). So any north easters fill me in on what me be in store here tonight tomorrow? I have looked at Met office forecast but none the wiser. I am guessing we are missing out on this event. Currelty blowing snow but nothing accumulating. if anything then I think our cover from start of day has diminished!
  3. Yup, keeping an eye on that too Doc. There are some echos now appearing and if they develop in similar way then there path will be somewhere over us. Fingers crossed, likewise with tomorrow - temps are okay, a little heigh but the same a Monday I think and Friday/Saturday (not that that meant anything!) but dp's are way low and look like they are staying on the right side. Hopefully wind is less strong.
  4. I was very lucky to get a kindle fire for chronic. it's great, does all the iPad stuff too like browsing and apps. I'm used to the iPad tho and kindle in cc comparison is . bit rubbish at the other stuff. does the job tho. I also just had a minor panic after dropping it. repeated turn ons but no joy and blank screen...until I realised I was holding it the wrong way round and looking at the back. ah dear, the years may be catching up with me. what am I rambling about- apologies off topic nonsense, edit - chronic? that was meant to say Christmas. hard to type on them to!
  5. morning all after these last few days I'd tend to agree...but I can't help torturing myself and have we my hopes up! how does it compare to.last Monday? I walked to work in pouring rain that day, no hint of sleet or snow. by later on in the day it turned to snow, even down the docks. edit- apologies snowy owl, was meant to quote the doc. weather ttoday looks cold. been some wee flurries overnight.
  6. Been wee flurries for last hour, but very fine and easy to miss! It's not below freezing but everything seems to be freezing up and snow falling is nice and dry. Hopefully these showers get going - cant see anything offshore for here doc? Nice conveyer set up for Lothians again it looks.
  7. Morning all I see there has been a flurry of North Eastern posts (not a flurry of snow anyway, that's for sure!) so wont repeat the doom and gloom for here. Very disappointing - we started with more snow yesterday than we have now! I agree the outlook for later today and tonight and I think tomorrow is more favourable in terms of temps. Not sure on convection but encouraging what CMD posted. Fingers crossed. Kids asking where the snow is-sledging was promised so we will head inland. Any reports on snow over in the Shire?
  8. Its very frustrating isn't it! Nice to hear the snow reports from elsewhere but I did have my hopes up for here. Ah well (gulp of beer), there is always tomorrow, which looks more promising to me. Unlike you Doc - I said to the kids we are sledging tomorrow. So we will! I dont think we will have to go too far for snow!
  9. Not that I am over analysing it or anything or looking for the faintest glimmer of hope but Saturday afternoon, night and Sunday day look better for here in terms of all round temps. But not sure on the precipitation. I think will continue to be marginal here, but on the right side for white stuff, just a bit wet.
  10. Sounds good to me. I will console myself with another beer from the fridge
  11. mmm, couple of good heavy showers earlier but temp still up at 2C, dp 0C so a bit damp, and not looking great east of here. Ground is white, but wet and think the cover we started with this morning and decreased rather than increased. may need to head inland for best sledging tomorrow unless things change dramatically. what time does it swing to a northerly! ;-)
  12. It does seem to be to some degree. If I was in SE Scotland then I would be getting a bit excited. It looks to be setting up quite nicely. You dont want the wind to swing nay more easterly - its a comin' anyway!
  13. Yup, another 5 minute wonder. Was slightly dampish to start compared to earlier showers but turned to drier snow, and at least it is snow still! Just need the showers to increase. Gone dark again though so increasing now definitely.. would be nice for temp to drop. may hold with more eastward wind being warmer, but sun away so colder, if you get what I mean. Woudl have expected more shower activity by now from prev experience, but I suppose I am thinking of our "usual" northerlies! Looking at radar then there appears a well organised attack making landfall NE England and heading for east borders and then Edinburgh? Then further out to see and perhaps for later this evening there is greater mass of moisture laiden clouds heading for the East cost kiltland to my eye?
  14. Interesting looking at the rain(snow) radar. In the last half hour the blobs out to see have darked in colour (increase in intensity) and starting to really pep up to my eye. Feeling the effects of a more easterly flow here. Temp was up to 4C apparently back down to 3C. DP's are good though. We may get away with it. Fife coast and Dundee and just to the north seem to have done well all morning from what it looks like on radar. Getting in to the interesting time now, hopefully temperature drops with the falling sun for here
  15. fantastic animation. Look at all that out to the east and south in the north sea heading our way. Liking the new MO warning. Inland from here really but optimistic of coastal chances still.
  16. Hopefully things will get going a bit more later - ties in with forecasts and my recollections! Remain encouraged that the temperatures are holding, if anything dropped though the dp has crept up.
  17. Excellent, snow shower their (very brief) but snow it was and the dry stuff. More hopeful - fantastic clouds building up out to see with great colours from reflecting sun.
  18. Morning all Looking at XC weather then these buoys way out offshore are reporting 3C/-2C dp - so I take that as promising. In Aberdeen it is 2C/-4C so hopefully the right side for snow. As IF and others say the snow machine is only just starting to get in to gear. I will be hopeful it might be a bit damp but hopefully white stiff falls. Still have reasonable cover of snow from Monday on the ground, and although above freezing it is crunchy, I guess from frozen ground. Nice to see all this excitement is coinciding with a weekend for a change!! Hopefully get some serous sledging action in!! good luck al!
  19. quite a good snow shower there - blown in on a very strong breeze. Not sure what SS terminology would be but definitively "fast snow". Perhaps fast horizontal snow. Warming up though. Temp holding at 2C at least but DP now 1C. Hopefully it gets no higher?! Once the easterly gets going then inland areas should get in on the act. The wind is really howling already with this shower! Unfortunately for Aberdeen immediate coast then conditions need to be even more favorable once full on easterly I think. But I also think (hope) they are onlooking the right side of marginal. game on!
  20. first showers rolling in off the sea here. Showers are sleet and ice - a keen SSE wind and Temp 2C/-2C so cold enough for snow I would say, maybe! I am right down by harbor and only shaded spots have snow left. It has melted today down here. Suspect back in west end of city it will be snowier but a slow gentle thaw been on cards today. Not sure if this is a milder blip today before colder tomorrow, but forecast seem to suggest temp is going to stay same say and night for next 4 days. Hopefully everywhere see's some nice snow if that is what you are after...
  21. Hi All I am trying to work out if I should get IMBY excited or not, IYKFAM. Will east coast suffer too much mod from sea. That high res norwegian model e.g. has 4c here on Friday. Any ideas or stabs in the dark?! I know it is probabaly a difficult one to call.
  22. hi all - not posted in a while but remained lurking. What have I to add? It Baltic about sums it up. Thanks for the technical summaries all (or some) and thanks to the rest of the amusing posts! So, a wee skiff of snow here - I'd say 2 inches, hopefully it stays to the weekend and kids want sledging! Interesting weather coming up but like many others feel a bit stung from some of the earlier near misses. Also its all from an S/SE/E so can be marginal here. Unless its Baltic.
  23. hi all that is the rain just started here. that is us for the next wee while here. have a look at the MetO 5 day forecast for here - worth a giggle (although maybe not, if it really does that then quite serous I suspect? High tides and flooding on east coast in places still sore from last time?) http://www.metoffice...st_weather.html If that is snow on the hills then ye-ha - and looks like it will be. Heading to Loch tay for chrimbo on Friday. Aberfeldy forecast does not look much better. http://www.metoffice...st_weather.html with temps at 4-5C then wont need to get too high to see some deep snow - perhaps 500m or so. I suspect I will be a wondering! Thanks to all for the weather analysis posts on this part of the site. saves trawling through a load of cr@p in the model thread. despite what you might think by the posts on model thread then for us lot there is some promise, eh. Have a great festive break - all the best.
  24. hi all a better looking weekend coming up, a bit milder too (have to say I wont be disappointed, I must be getting old). With all the moaning and groaning going on in the Model Thread you'd think that was it for winter - in fact I think most of us have seen snow on a good few occasions so far this winter, and we are not even half way through December!! Its been a great start. There are still snow patches (few and far between) in the city here, and ground is frozen solid for what feels like weeks. Just need to get today out of the road. Its looking very grim and in for a long cold soaking. cheers
  25. Hi all A none event here too - not read back but assume this is the general trend. Other than a couple of flakes of snow around 7am I don't think e have seen any for of precipitation all day! Got up to about 2C I think so a bit of a thaw - little though - more compacting and frozen hard out there again now. Temps up to 5C perhaps the next few days so it will surrender! So still some good potential for next week. Easterly from what I fathomed the other day so hopefully a really cold one from an IMBY point of view! back to just now and looking at temps and they are still quite low over much of the country. That precipitation band seems to be pirouetting nicely over the Cairngorms and (hopefully) finally Glenshee is getting in on the act. The seemed to have missed anything of any significance to date. Was tempted with Lecht this week but been to busy. Will hopefully get a cheeky day at GS next week! See you on the other side next week all! Have a good weekend
