Manchester Airport TAF still holding firm on suggestion of snow between 09:00 and 11:00. Chance of freezing rain suggested after 12:00.....yuk!
-
Wait for the big hole to open up just as the snow/rain hits Manchester...lol
-
I think the precipitation is only just hitting the West coast, as confirmed by Chris. The echoes ahead of this are likely false returns I think.
-
Main bulk of precipitation already knocking on the door of the west coast and echoes breaking out to the South of Manchester...
This is way earlier than EURO4 predicted. Let's also hope it is wrong with it's miserable snow predictions!

Not the heaviest snow but probably the best blizzard here since 1979.
Some of the drifts were insane in parts in the March 2013 event. Unfortunately, the rain shadow meant we saw very little where I am. We fared much better in Jan and Nov 2010.

I remember having a 12 hr blizzard from that non event.
Quite, it was great for some

Yep the dreaded SE flow and then that mysterious hole opens up on the radar, like northwestsnow says hopefully Feb will deliver proper.
Loads of people rave about March 2013, but the SE flow made that a non-event for us.

AROME model is going for a rain shadow over Greater Manchester tomorrow restricting snow to the highest ground.
Looks like SE flow so wouldn't surprise me if we stay relatively dry. Still, at least we will miss most of the rain

Unlike EURO4, 12z GFS and Arpege are both keen on a decent spell of snow across much of the region. I guess we should be following the high res precipitation models at this range. Fingers crossed the GFS and Arpege trump the EURO4 tomorrow!
-
Latest EURO4 not keen on much snow away from high ground tomorrow which seems to tie in with the metoffice forecast. Looks like it may be the usual snow mainly above 200-300m with slushy deposits possible to lower level. However, will be interesting to see how it unfolds. Nothing is set in stone of course.

Remember to watch out for ice pellets tomorrow around 10 AM.
Yeah, freezing rain could be a bigger problem in some places early on.

You always wonder when the BBC NEWS 24 weather only talks about tomorrows snow event and gives very little detail. Monday was not even mentioned.
Maybe there are developments, I wonder?
The latest metoffice forecast isn't overly inspiring:
North West England
Headline:
Cold tonight with a wet day in store for tomorrow
This Evening and Tonight:
A mostly clear night with light winds and temperatures readily falling to below freezing. Some low cloud may form over the hills with a few freezing fog patches likely in low-lying areas. Minimum temperature -5 °C.
Sunday:
Cloud, rain, and some snow will spread across the region. Snow is expected mainly over high ground and will turn to rain later on. Gradually becoming drier after dark. Maximum temperature 9 °C.
-
Precipitation dying off here again and looking at the radar, can't see anything significant here today. Tomorrow may be different. Arpege is indicating a decent period of snow for much of the region tomorrow.
-
Sleet and wet snow falling here now. Certainly no risk of anything settling atm.
-
Just been slightly damp here for the past hour or so, the precipitation we had having died off. Some more intense precipitation seems to be edging over Manchester in this direction.

Typical. Even so my heart will sink a little when I see green instead of white in the morning
It is all forecast to turn to rain from the South West anyway, so you wouldn't be missing much, assuming it snows anyway, which is not a given.
-
Warnings updated for snow tomorrow. Area extended further South and West.
-
Precipitation not that intense now but turning more to snow.
-
Clearly no rain shadow effect at the moment as precipitation is making it across with ease now. Unfortunately, it is sleet here atm though
-
Moderate rain starting to turn to snow.
-
Skies are darkening to my North and West. Not sure if the hole on the radar is rain shadow effect or more to do with precipitation slipping South Eastwards.

Classic mamchester rain shadow effect in action today.
Shouldn't this have less of an effect with winds so light/almost calm?
-
Lightest of rain falling here.

Its breaking up about 5 miles west of me lol.
I think winds are from SSE so dreaded rain shadow? Mind you, they are very light so shouldn't really have as much effect as usual?

Looking for posts in the Wales thread for snow inspiration. No posts for 6 hours so I'm guessing it's raining there.
