Thick cloud here. Was 18.7c now 18.1c and dropping. Bye bye summer 2023. You were late but at least you arrived ... kinda ...

    12c here now Beka 🤧
When it drops to sub 5c and F8-F10 from the west  / wnw  I'll dust down my speedsurfing gear and hit the water again (avatar pic  refers)  😊  , that'll be a shock to the system

I assume March was very wet as well?

Your stats show on average it has been raining on half the days in the last three and a bit months. I suspect that will swing in favour of dry days if you went back to May.

    A fair point al78
March - 96mm and 17 days of rain falling

April and May below average rainfall and higher than average sunshine
June delivered on dry and sunny weather for the most part

So yes on the balance significant swings between dry periods and wet protracted periods

No it hasn't. 4 dry days after a lot of rain here. 'Normal' autumn conditions are very wet here. I'm not going to not be unhappy about getting soaked frequently just because others aren't. The landscape is lush. Reservoirs are at good capacity. We do not need days of constant heavy rain here.

Jeez. How bad of me to be unhappy about getting drenched and spending all day at my desk dripping wet and ending up full of cold numerous times every autumn when there are poor other areas that are a bit dry.

I love this forum. Others moan all the time but whenever I show my weather preferences, people have a problem with it.

    No. You have.

Agree with you on the wet wet wet mate ,, here's my stats

    July almost 200% 1991-2020 rainfall average   112.8mm vs 57.38mm
August nearly 200% give or take a few mm 1991-2020 rainfall average  114.2mm vs 69.23mm
September nearly 200% give or take a few mm 1991-2020 rainfall average 134mm vs 73.89mm

July 2023 - 12 days of rain falling
August 2023 - 14 days of rain falling
September 2023 - 16 days of rain falling
October 2023 to date - 5 days of rain falling

Looking forward to the "forecast"  dry spell coming up

edit.. not got my maths head on today

I think warmth in Autumn is just as much a part of it as cold. Just depends which way the wind blows.

    Was ever thus mate 👍

The weather we experience in the temperate UK is always governed by the MSLP and resultant wind flow
Atm we have HP to our SE and LP to our WSW driving up a warm "southerly flow"  ,  nothing really out of the ordinary with this set up , if it were Winter it would be a mild setup if it were mid summer it would be hot and humid , its Autumn, warmer than average with varying cloud.
I've been stuck under a sw'er cloud conveyor for days now delivering at times wet and windy conditions .. its Autumn therefore "nothing new under the sun"  or lack of it 😒

  5. A continuation of Autumnal October weather here .  since the turn of the month . wind , rain , grey overcast skies .. to be expected given the mild sw flow (actually not too different than July & August )
Great to see the south getting some decent sun and warmth,  🌞   send the surplus north please ..   still have a tonne of gardening work to start , that I shelved during the s****e  July and August and for the most part of September bar the first week or so.
Lovely feed of clear skies into the south from France

Wondering what folks here thought of September. I would give it a 7.5/10 overall. Was away for a week so am going by 2nd hand accounts a little but first half was lovely with warmth and sunshine and 2nd half was very mixed with a mix of showery days, sunny days and heavy rain but it never felt oppressively wet or gloomy for me as a whole, a decent and enjoyable Sept overall. It felt like a sunnier version of this years August.

September for me strangely was representational of Summer    3.5/10    first 3rd = June (Excellent), middle 3rd = July (bad)  , final 3rd = August (not quite as bad as July , just) .

Looks like you guys in the south have some sun today, dull and damp up here today but hopefully some sun tomorrow. Probably will be last chance to sit out I'd imagine until March at the earliest, but most likely April.

Even worse out west Dark Horse ,, proper autumn for the last few days . wind , rain , dull .. not good at all, albeit mild
Looking at the next few days "warm spell"   out west will more than likely be dominated by cloud than sun ,  as with elevated 850s and a generally South to Sw flow will deliver a cloudy mild spell with plenty of the white / grey stuff being dragged in off the irish sea / sw approaches

I'd use the term "warmest" though.

However, "Hottest" reads better and more dramatic, i guess🙄.

Lol .. yes .. commensurate with the "hottest" June on record ....  errmm "mildest" would be a more appropriate adjective ?

  9. Just about had enough of the "wet" season now ,  another forecast dry day turned out a soaker .. thanks Beeb and MetO ,  doing really well here .. NOT
Stats perspective  1991-2020 Mean rainfall for here for July , August and September is 200.5 mm  compared to 2023 which dropped 361mm ,  the warming climate is delivering enhanced north Atlantic evaporation = more cloud = more rain ,  in other words a warmer air mass holds more moisture , which has to fall somewhere .. unfortunately the UK is G-Zero, specifically those prone to wet Sw'er's .. SE and East somewhat drier
    Its getting warmer but wetter

Incomplete until tomorrow but until the other stations data comes in, here is the sunshine amounts per county for 2023.

East Sussex were the only county to breach 200 hours but many places got more than their July or even August totals.

Fully updated table to be posted tomorrow in the sunshine watch thread ☀️

    Good work mate 👍

My stats  (Valley Met/ Climate Station) . not fairing too well for comparison     2022 vs 2023 vs 1991-2020 Mean
September generally warmer,  duller and wetter than the mean by some margin
Warmer due to the fine and settled spell at the start of the month , but thereafter downhill into typical Autumn weather for this part of the UK

It is a very sad indictment of our climate how warm this Autumn has been, its only going to get worse, much worse sadly. The days of a lovely Autumnal day are very few and far between,  the only positive is that glorious sunrise as you commute to work, that so far outweighs summer mornings, there is no compare. For light the best season by far

mate .. its only just nearing the end of September , 1/3rd the way in 😊
That would be like me saying at the end of June what an amazingly warm and sunny summer this has been  ....   then look what transpired 💦
Loved the "Sun runs"  Anglesey to east Cheshire and back 5 days a week 2000 - 2008  mornings and evenings ,  yes certain times of the year I'd get both in the face .. if the sun cared to shine

One aspect we can be sure of is that at some point in time everyone will feast at the UK weather table , enjoying their weather preference(s) albeit some getting fed more than others .. the nature of the B

Haven't checked, but probably similar here, seems like there's more wind behind the cold front. Think those north of me should be watching the occluded front crossing the UK now. Think that is acting like a cold front normally does, winds will die down behind it.

    Actually I think it's a warm front.

Fax 18z showing the "wraparound" occlusion
    Wind still blowing hard here

  13. Been blowing old boots here since the arrival and passage of Agnes's Cold front, quite an intense period of precipitation and wind, now gusting horizonal 60mph drizzle and winds probably at their peak.
Not quite as bad as anticipated (70+  mph gusts)

  14. Battened down here on the Nw Coast of the Isle of Anglesey , winds starting to pick up over the last hour or so, expected peak gusts later this afternoon /  early evening circa 70mph + , shame its not a west to west north west flow, otherwise a day off Speedsailing at West Kirby would have been a go'er.
