Quite a lot of lightning activity over Wales at the moment as well as the Bristol Channel. All heading this way I wonder if it will keep up or weaken a bit as it heads inland....

Winter Model Discussion 12Z 22/1/13 onwards.

I don't like that chart. It looks like a face mocking us over the Atlantic now thats it's winning in pushing the colder air away. In all seriousness,as others have said, the overnight models are showing an increasingly active period coming up. With the thaw setting in soon, accompanied by heavy rain &/or showers with strong winds, it looks like flooding will be a big concern for many. Any remaining snow in my area has already began to thaw. Surface water is already sitting on the fields and roads, even though really it's been quite a dry month bar the snow (for me anyway). Although many preferences of people here are for sustained cold and snow, this period of unsettled weather is far from boring. For me, constant grey cloud all day is boring. It's just a shame we aren't really seeing much in the way of more settled sunny weather in the models for a change....yet. -
I've noticed for the past few years that spanish plumes seem harder to come by in late spring and into Summer. If one does materialise, it seems to quickly get pushed away by depressions from the West. As a fan of thunderstorms, I'm hoping for a more active year from warm spanish plumes. As much as I hate humid weather...I'd glady cope with it to see a storm on par with May 8th/9th 2008, that came through my region and I believe parts of Wales and Midlands. Other than that, just a more settled Spring in general would be nice, with comfortable warm sunshine. Not an atlantic low sweeping in every Friday...

Heavy snow here in North Bristol again. I didn't realise this was due? Exciting stuff and its starting to settle a bit on pavements. On another note, am i sad in feeling depressed seeing the snow melting into a watery grave? Pretty decent though considering I've had snow on the ground since Friday. Going back to mild wet weather will be dull, but inevitable at some point. I don't think i've seen much sunshine this month either!

I certainly didn't expect that snow tonight after seeing the rainfall forecast yesterday. A good covering of around 5cm I'd say so spot on from the Met Office warnings issued today really! So for the end of this week - transitional snow/freezing rain perhaps before milder air sweeps in (if it does )? Hopefully an interesting end rather than full blown thaw before anything arrives. Time will tell... Here's hoping for a final bite of winter during February before I can look forward to chasing thundery lows in F.I from mid-spring Keep safe if you're driving tomorrow!

Moderate to heavy snow falling from Filton, through m4/m5 almondsbury interchange and up the a38 northwards to my hometown. It is slowly settling, but not on the road at this time. Treachorous driving through it though.

The nowcasting style of this event is fascinating. Places around me are snowing but not here! Filton, Frenchay apparently has light snow. But from my desk, unless the office windows are filthy I'm seeing nothing in Stoke Gifford. Sandwiched between the two! My hometown looks to be in a good position if latest NAE was to verify. EDIT: OK i was wrong managed to peel myself away from the desk and it is snowing outside. Will be a fun drive home at 5....

Temp has been rising here since approx 1900hrs apparently. Now at 1.8C with dewpoint of 0.2C...interesting.

Wow. Compared to this morning all the snow has thawed quite a bit! Pavements and roads are now clear bar the huge lumps of rock salt and ice stuck together. Only the fields and plants have snow on them now. Will February deliver? I hope so as my bday is next month!

Afternoon, Not sure if this has been answered already, but the 'Climate and Environment' section of the forums seems to be missing. I noticed this when trying to access the Arctic Ice discussion - The Refreeze via search engine instead, but if I go on it, it says I do not have permission and I should register or log-in. However I am already logged in at the time. Was this taken down intentionally due to the site traffic perhaps? Grateful for any info - cheers!

I believe that is (part of) the occluded front that brought us the heavy snowfall today. I only know the 'empty' symbol refers to an 'upper front' going by the Met Office symbols guide. (http://www.metoffice...weather-symbols) Anyway it is weakening and during tomorrow it is forecast to give some patchy areas of light snow & flurries. Eventually it will fizzle out. Hence turning to this - now a weakened or 'dying' front at 0000hrs Sunday morning. -
Im scared Im just in the Amber 14 miles North of Bristol but in the past it has happened where the front moves quite a bit further east right at the last minute in these situations haha....cautiously excited. Journey to work Friday might be difficult..espeically coming home! Looks like parts of Wales will get pasted.
