Well ended up with a max wind of 41mph on the house. Bear in mind that the wind tonight was coming from a southerly direction this evening so the worst of the winds were out in the field where 45-55mph gusts probably occoured. I was out in the garden during all that wind, it was certainly eerie at times.

Personally if I had to come up with a dangerous wind criteria (possible serious injury or death) it would begin at 55mph as large branches or trees come down from a wind like that. A be aware advisory(Possible minor injury) for anything above 40mph as I have seen 45mph gusts to break large twigs or small branches off of trees when measuring with my handheld anemometer. I don't think our house will get the full amount of the wind tomorrow if its coming from a southerly direction as the trees block it off, I suspect it will probably read maxes between 35-40mph when there could be 50mph out in the farmers field.

Pretty wet and windy here this evening with the highest gust being 39mph which is not far below the 43mph gust I got a week or so ago. The whole ground is sodden from the rain. Anxiously waiting for this low coming next thursday, a long way out yet but if it does hit us it would likely bring some very high gusts.

Why doesn't someone sue the papers?

This really is rediculous and going beyond a joke now! 180mph winds, for here . Sorry but if that really was the case we would all be evacuating now and told to leave the country. Yes, people should have every right to sue them if they come out with this nonsense. And I thought the scaremomgering of 'widespread 80mph wind storm to batter britain' was bad . -
There was an awful lot of fog here this morning but it has broken up to allow some sun to come out. Really glad we had that windy day a few days ago as it still doesn't look like this high pressure is going anywhere soon. The models are showing some more unsettled interesting weather by the end of next week but I have a feeling that these charts will just be pushed back again. One can only hope I guess.

Going by Ian Fergusons forecast tonight we will have 40-45mph gusts tomorrow. I know that doesn't seem much to most people but thats the sort of wind we get down here most storms so i would think some people will be suprised at how windy it will be. Especially when you consider the fact that its been so calm for what seems like weeks on end! Will probably go up Castle Hill tomorrow to see if I can get 50mph+ gusts as the winds are much stronger up there due to its height and the shape of it.

Personally, I am getting a bit bored of this dead anticyclonic weather and it allready seems to have been around for weeks and not just days. We should really be getting lots of fun wet and windy weather at this time of year, and it is quite dissapointing for me to still see no signs of the Atlantic properly waking up in the later frames of the model outputs.

The latest BBC forecast at 12:00PM today only mentioned 60mph gusts for exposed areas of Scotland so I can only assume that the winds have recently been downgraded a bit. A forecast of '60mph gusts for exposed areas' would usually equate to 40-45mph for lower less exposed places, and these sort of speeds are seen every year even for us down the south. It won't really be anything noteworthy for Scotland, as they tend to get more gales then southern areas anyway. The snow and cold risk is the thing to be more concerned about.
-
I think a lot of this is to do with the fact that this will be mainly affecting coastal areas. There is a warning out for 70mph gusts just recently, but that will only be for very exposed areas and most places in the warning area will more likely have 40-50mph gusts instead.

Its pretty much as calm as you can get out there at the moment in terms of any wind. Quite a lot of stations are showing exactly 0mph, which is something you don't see everyday for a properly exposed weather station. Anyway personally I don't want there to be any snow this week as we are going to be starting to build a tower next to one of our trees that got damaged by the wind a few weeks back!

Weather in the general media (Newspaper features etc)

I'm shocked!!!!! I can't believe this sort of rubbish even exists, could they really get any worse. -
Not really interested in snow or cold myself but it looks like it won't be quite as cold as the models were showing yesterday. I have been checking the Model thread these past few days and there are definately a few slight downgrades.
