Aye @Ravelin it was snowing almost down to ground level in the Fort today. The hill is looking in good form - enjoy! Incidentally I awoke to over an inch of snaw on the ground this morning...which was nice.

There is nothing shameless about that pic, isn't Scotland stunning in the snow. I love my back yard!

Kind of in the same boat myself at the moment would like to get skiing this weekend but just not sure where.
West seems best at the moment, well Glencoe anyway cos there seems to be a lack of reports from Nevis. From Aberdeen, to be realistic that involves making it a weekend trip, which adds expense. If conditions were great Wed probably go for that but I'm not convinced they are good enough to justify it. Western resorts don't have much snow forecast either so probably won't improve.
Glenshee would be my preferred option, but as like last year it seems to be struggling to pick up the snow. If the forecast is right it might do better than the others for snow in the next few days. We can afford to wait and go on Monday, with the hope it's picked up more snow by then.
As SS says, Lecht is great for beginners, gets going with less snowfall and never seems to have much in the way of queues even when the car park looks busy. If it picks up the same amount of snow as Glenshee in the next couple of days it might be the better option as it at least seems to have a base on the pistes currently. Best pre-book Ski Hire though if going as they can run out when busy. You can do that on the website the day before I think.
Cairngorm has good beginners slopes up top, but it's a god awful place to be if it's windy and you are in the cloud. Gets slated a lot for lift queues and Ski hire used to be chaotic but that might have improved. Will probably be busy this weekend because of hols and the proximity to lots of accommodation in Aviemore. When fully open and quiet even it has the benefit that relative beginners can ski from top to bottom on one long run.
Unless the wife finds a great accommodation deal in Ft William I think we'll probably wait and see what conditions are like by Monday and head to either Glenshee or Lecht if it looks worth it. Give me a winter where the only worry is if the resorts have managed to dig out the tows from the last storm. Beats this will we, won't we nonsense.
Nevis Range is looking not too shabby at the moment, hoping for a few more showers before the weekend.

Can I ask your advice or recommendation for this Saturday please. We are wanting to go skiing this weekend (leaving from Aberdeen) and wonder, based on current or expected conditions, what the best place would be to head. My daughter has just had an intensive series of lessons on the dry slopes here but may be more confident than she is able! My son is relatively inexperienced too. Any advice about the best location (probably not Nevis or Glencoe for geographical reasons). I wondered bout the Lecht but wasn't sure about conditions.
Hoping for a few flurries here over the weekend but fear it may be of the melted snow variety..
If the snow conditions improve for the Lecht I would definitely go there. It is perfect for beginners and children. They have a magic carpet and chairlift making access easy and the poma tows are child friendly. This weekend will be very busy at Cairngorm probably and Glenshee if the conditions improve. The Lecht is just so much easier to manage with kids. We used to opt for it when our boys were wee and they loved it, perfect for an Aberdeen start too. Enjoy. I'm looking to four days (hopefully) at Nevis Range (snow dance in progress).

Yeah, it's not great at all, feeling a bit too small in this one, starting to look around the house at where we can hide if this gets any worse. Forget horrid, this Henry is horrendous. Amazed the power has stayed on...stained glass window, that's me jinxed it.

Wheesht Henry, simmer down. I'm trying to watch the telly! Too many wind, structural and crashy bangy noises are making this evening's viewing rather difficult. I've had to turn the telly up tae Malky

it's roaring out there, doesn't seem to be settling down, the opposite in fact. I can hear it blasting down the glen then whacking the house. Too many trees around for comfort, I may have to take cover under the duvet soon. Power was on and off thirteen times in an hour this morning - hopefully Operation Conil (Candle for you Soothmoothers) remains a training exercise.

been up since before 6am with what sounded like a freight train going past the house. It's a bit disconcerting living under very tall trees when you hear them screaming and groaning in the wind. The roof of the house has been tested this morning. It would appear there is a wee bit of a lull at the moment but not for long going by my LOTW weather model prediction. Can't make it to work either what with roads blocked and schools closed. Hoping the lecky stays on but have charged everything just in case...spoke too soon that it howling again!

3C at 5.30 tonight down from 11.5C this morning. Dusting of snow back on the Nevis Range hills too, time to just sit back and see what happens. I'm back to the LOTW Model (Looking out the window), it's accuracy will never be questioned by the MT crew, well unless the windows are dirty but I have I have factored in the skoosh and wipe factor to prevent any 'foggy' results. Looking a wild one for tomorrow, hud oan te yir hats!

Just checking...do models only show probabilities for weather? They are not actual forecasts are they?

I can't wait THREE WEEKS!!!!! I'll be up there at the weekend (Nevis Range) wind permitting and next weekend and the next. I refuse to be beaten...even on heather. As long as there is a refill before half term I can cope sliding on anything (I hope)

Had a few snow showers today with snow cover still in place. The snow showers were not seen on the radar and not forecast either! I keep looking at the forecasts but they seem to have no relation to what is actually happening. I'm thinking I may as well get into delivering forecasts myself based on nothing more than my lifetime experience as a time-served Scottish person and general knowledge accumulated whilst living as a human on planet Erf...tomorrow will mostly be full of weather, cauld for some with a top temp. of brass and a low temp. hanging around baltic. Precipitation could happen anywhere ranging from smaw rain tae snaw or no at awe. That should cover it then, enjoy your weather folks.

I went out for a run thinking it was going to be dry and cold tonight so of course it snowed. Topped up our wee dusting from last night which doesn't total very much but it is very dry snow at least.

It's about as rare as dogpoop although rather prettier and less smelly. It happens when ice gets extruded from saturated wood during lengthy cold spells - well, more than a day or so. If you go through woodlands with dead wood lying around you'll see it every winter. Rare my airse.
Is that not what I said? Obviously just not as eloquently put as you, hehe

Rare 'hair ice' discovered in Bracklinn Woods
National park rangers have found a rare form of ice covering dozens of pieces of dead wood in woodland near Callander.
The "hair ice" is a highly unusual type of frost that needs a very particular set of conditions to form.
Suzanne Humphris, a ranger team leader for the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, discovered the ice in the Bracklinn Woods on Friday.
Not sure how they classify rare but I see this stuff in winter when it's frosty. I had it in my garden on Saturday and it's all over the place down by the woods/river locally. We must have the 'very particular' conditions for it to form then...lucky me. It is very intriguing.

Hang the weather, so sad the news that made this grey day so much more dreich and in homage to Mr Bowie, my thoughts on the MT
"It's big and it's bland full of tension and fear/
They do it over there but we don't do it here"RIP Dave, a true hero.

literally the slowest, sparsest snow shower going on at the moment with the tiniest flakes possible. It's a wee bit magical looking if I'm being honest - that's as flowery as I can force myself to make it, I can't do ramping/ talking up/ selling/ slavering pish

-5C and absolutely beautiful. I'm happy if it snows but if it stayed dry and frosty I would be very happy, no rain please.

We're doomed says the MT, I don't believe they do this to themselves every winter. I hope some of them don't miss the chemist tonight for their prescriptions or there won't be enough toys left on the planet to satiate their bottom lip drops.

First day of the season at Nevis Range. Great to be oot in the snaw sliding even if it was limited to a couple of runs - didn't think we'd get out this side of Hogmanay so well chuffed. Don't know how the next few days will pan out but I don't think skiing will be on the list but perhaps surfing or water skiing may be. Hatches battened!
