I actually prefer the cold more than snow. I would rather have minus temps all day and night in and frosts rhan see snow all the time. At least then it feels more like it should do.
I'm opposite really, just want enough snow so I can build another Snowman like the last two years lol.
-
Just had a good look through the old NW England regional discussion threads from early January 2010, brilliant days back then weren't they, talk of constant below minus tempratures, persistent heavy snowfall, basically everything you could possibly want in terms of proper wintry weather really.
It's such a shame we seem just far away as we could possibly be from that type of setup at the moment.
-
I don't really have much to moan about as such because I did have falling heavy and lying snow on Friday, the only complaint I can really have is that it didn't last longer with the rain washing most of it away come the next morning.
I'm content with that for now and will continue to be unless come the mid Jan period there's still no signs of anything changing, that could well end up to be the case but for now I'll continue to cling onto that as a possibility.
-
No chance!, that's all I have to say.
Ha, this comment of mine was made in the heat of the moment and it now looks almost completely nailed on to be right!
As the saying goes you get what you say and I certainly seem to be paying for that just now

The next few winters including this one will turn out to be mild with next to no snow.
See I can do exactly what he does and the ironic thing is I'm more likely to be right lol.

The other reason im unhappy with James Madden is what happened a few weeks ago. I posted on his guessbook saying his forecast was unlikely to be correct for Dec and we would only experience shortlived cold snaps with snow mainly affecting higher ground in the N. My post was polite and I gave reasons why I felt his forecast was wrong. My comments were not approved because it appears he only allows comments which are praising his forecast. Lets not kid ourselves some of us have done well considering the cold stratosphere, strong PV but this Dec has hardly been exceptionally cold with widespread snowfalls.
And yet he still claims to have forecast it correctly lol , if he came out and admitted that things haven't exactly according to plan for December like Piers for example with the cold arriving later than he initially expected at some point next month(something that neither he or us can really be sure of one way or another) then I would be able to at least gain a tiny little bit more respect for him but no typically he decides to gloss over all that.
And don't even get me started on his Xmas forecast.

do u think we will get more snow next month
Impossible to really say at this moment in time but if there is to be any proper cold at all and when I say that I mean like the last two winters not like what we've just had this weekend then the period between late Jan, early Feb is most likely given the current state of the stratosphere ( see the Stratosphere tempature watch thread for more information on that). That's not to say it couldn't arrive at some point before then in January however.

As others have said very interesting and informative thread this, kudos to all those involved.
Think I'm going to be keeping a very close eye on events unfolding here because as we all know not really much at all to look forward too in the immediate term future.

Anyone back to the weather itself.
How's it looking at the minute BT, anywhere near closer to freezing or is it already there?
-
No I don't, why should I? He's just showing the type of chart he would like to see. Is it any worse than all of the pics filled with snow & extreme cold weather? The preference any particular poster has doesn't affect the actual weather in any way. We comtimuously get charts posted in the model thread & others from famous cold spells in the past, that have no relevance whatsoever. Should Gavin be offended by them?
Didn't think I was personal & if it came over that way I apologise.
I'm here all year, not just winter. I love the weather in all it's forms (well anyticyclonic gloom excepted!). I just hate the view that if you don't want anything but snow from November to April, then there's something wrong with you & you have no right posting.
Fair enough and I don't necessarily dispute any of that, of course people are entitled to their opinion, just happen to think that profile pic especially with the smiley face is maybe pushing things a little bit too far but whatever.
-
What in the world was daveshgh so offended by anyway? Didn't need to get so personal.
-
No more annoying than so many of the OTT snow ramping posts that we have to endure. Some of us just love weather. All types of weather. Gavin prfers mild settled weather, get over it!
So you don't find that profile pic offensive in anyway shape or form?
Okay then.
-
I'm sure Gavin will be back to post charts and remind us!
Not to mention that directly rub in it your face profile pic of his which is clear view every time he posts whether you're viewing a thread from the inside or outside.
Don't think I've seen anything as irritating in my entire life and and that's saying something.

Just had another peer into the model discussion thread, really wish I hadn't.
-
I'm still here ..... Only posting so I can see if my signature amuses anyone or is it just me? I need a gin after peeking at the model discussion thread :-(
If what some are foreseeing does come off then I think I might avoid this place for a while before coming at a later date and seeing what the situation is by then.
Just can't stand the thought of endless mild conditions and doom and gloom with Gavin D reveling in it all, not to mention his stupid, stupid profile pic which is already starting to really get my back up

Sadly I dont see any blocking going on over greenland in January yet, and i dont see the pv splitting any time soon either. Problem is any blocking occuring now would produce cold temperatures and frost, which is no good if you want snow.
Yep, that's indeed how things look at the moment.
The only thing we can do really do is to constantly keep an eye out for that potential SSW however long that takes, if it does then we're in business and something at least similar to GP's forecast could come off, if it doesn't before late feb/early well let's not think about that just yet that eh.

Are we to expect anything over the next few hours or days?
Edit: Just looked at the gfs and it shows snow for the south of the region at 6 tonight. Is this looking likely
Might be wrong but personally I wouldn't count it going by the law of averages.
-
Well the last two days have certainly shown how fickle the weather can be, yesterday seemingly by a miracle everything went right now today on the other hand seemingly that could go wrong has gone wrong lol
In seriousness we really couldn't expect much else out of an Atlantic driven weather system especially for those of us who live more coastal, with the way things are now it's simply too marginal, we just happened to be on the right side of it yesterday. As has been already well established on here the only way we'd be guaranteed more of the same or more is if we had a proper blocking pattern, Hopefully we'll start to see a change towards something like that at some point in January, fingers crossed.
For now I'm just happy for what we managed to get as I really didn't expect much if anything at all a few days ago.

Seriously, I've never known anyone have so many mood swings....can't be normal
Thought the same reading his posts and I can be bad at the best of times.
-
Temperatures seem to be on the rise now, any idea why?
-
Woke up to a covering of wet snow, then about 11.00 it started again and snowed heavy for 2-3 hrs, we've still got a covering on the grass but everywhere is starting to freeze now, daytime max of 0.7c ..must admit i wasn't expecting this at all.
Pretty much the same as this really, has been over 1C for the last few hours which is higher than it was for most of the afternoon.
-
Snowing heavy here now in Runcron.
BT must going crazy lol
-
What is it?
Have a look for yourself in the model output discussion thread.

On a side note has anyone noticed Gavin D's new profile picture? You would have thought constantly putting up model charts showing mild conditions was bad enough but this just takes the biscuit.
What Are Your 'gut Feelings' Of The Winter?
in Spring Weather Discussion

Gut feeling is that mainly see mild and wet conditions from this point onward's with the odd possible minor cold blip thrown like we've just had in February. So mild/ just above average overall really.
Nothing like we saw in last two winters, just more of what we had come to expect before then really.
