It's happened because of a couple of things: As a planet we just experienced the warmest two months ever recorded, back to back. July 2023 warmest ever recorded, August 2023 2nd warmest ever recorded. June 2023 was the 8th warmest. We got lucky /unlucky (depending on your weather preference) during July and August by avoiding seeing that heat dome migrate north. It didn't go away though - we just finally tapped into it, just as August turned to September. Given the timing, it maxed out our stats for the month.

Thanks. I figured I had probably got it all wrong. So this first half of October could be mirroring 2001 then if that forecast is accurate.

So how do those figures compare to how Oct 2001 started out? Update: I found the mean daily figures: 2001-10-01 15.0 2001-10-02 14.2 2001-10-03 14.1 2001-10-04 13.8 2001-10-05 15.9 2001-10-06 14.1 2001-10-07 12.7 2001-10-08 12.6 2001-10-09 13.1 2001-10-10 12.4 2001-10-11 14.9 2001-10-12 15.2 2001-10-13 15.9 2001-10-14 15.4 2001-20-15 15.3 So I presume that's the total 199.7/15 which would give 13.3 avg for the first half of Oct 2001. That would put us 1C ahead

Given wide parts of the country are at around 15C at midnight, it's going to happen.

It's the BBC Forecast that is showing 7C Fri min for me and Met Office showing 9C.

When I predicted an evens chance of getting the record, I incorrectly assumed we would get another plume that would push large parts of the country into low 20s max. That hasn't happened, outside the SE. But we have had wind and cloud from the south and west that has given us some mild nights and I see now that those conditions are every bit as big an influence on boosting the daily values as we head further into Autumn.

Got no complaints either about this summer. We had a decent June and Sept without hitting the high 30s in the height of summer that we got in 2022. I agree, the questions could have been worded better. (Once a poll is posted I can't edit it). I think I was a bit hyped up that night by the heat when I wrote them.

Thanks Roger. Well spotted RE 1846. Really interesting that taken over the 4 months, 2023 will rank so highly. Most here will only remember their cool summer holiday in July/Aug (myself included) and forget the very warm months preceding and succeeding.

Not to worry. I enjoyed compiling it even so and seeing the pattern of warm events in recent years when both months are taken together.

It's going to be top by a country mile. The only years that come close are all within our climate change heated last 20 years: 2021 15.5/16.0 2016 15.2/16.1 2006 15.8/16.9 2005 15.8/15.2

Things can change quickly on here run to run. I would say the odds are even, so yes it's is going to be close. I would not risk more than that amount, not that I ever place a bet.

If tonight's ECM and GFS forecast verifies, I'd bet £100 with any bookie that the record Sept CET is surpassed, if any were daft enough to offer me an evens bet.

It's a big part of the problem. Britain has some of the oldest housing stock anywhere in the world. Millions of people live in houses with no cavity wall (including myself). Homes in places like Spain have for many years been built for the heat. Ours were built for the climate we had 80 years ago. But our climate is no longer like that. Ok, its not Mediterranean but it's warming fast. Somewhere down the line it's going to take a huge investment to retrofit homes like mine.

It does make me reconsider my retirement plans. There's no way to escape the heat right now here in Coventry with a job, kids in school and older people in my life to care for. But what in the future, when I have no job to do, no kids at home and no one else to care for? Where to go to escape heatwaves? My plan would be to buy an old camper van, fill it with fuel and head somewhere like Fort William or north of there. Closer to home, I would probably head for the NE coast around Bamburgh. At midday today it's 27C in Coventry, sunny 22C at Bamburgh and 19C and rain in Fort William!

Earlier this week I resorted to wetting the glass panes in my south facing door and sticking tin foil (shiny side facing out) to it. That helped a lot. Inside the house, I throw open all the windows early for a while until outside is warmer. Then close them and draw all curtains and blackout blinds until bedtime, then open them again. I have a fan that helps move the air around a little in the bedroom and sleep under just a sheet. I've often done this in hot weather in summer but never in September until now.

Ok awkwardly worded choices I admit, but it's completely 50/50 between bring it on and make it go away.

Well there's another record gone. 4 consecutive September days over 30C. We managed 3 days in succession in 1898, 1906, 1911 and 2016. To put it another way, we had not had three consecutive 30C days for over 100 years, and we've now had it happen twice in the last 7 years.

Pretty even results so far. Personally I want something halfway between what we have now and what we had last summer! (But that's not a poll option!)

If you like cool summers, 2023 is shaping up to be a good friend.

North West Spain seems like the place to be. Even when it's 40C over most of the country, places like La Coruna remain at a pleasant 23C.

I travelled all the way round Australia when I was in my 20s. Sydney /Byron Bay is a lovely climate. Definitely worth a visit if you can, but it's pointless going for 2 weeks. It's takes 10 days to get over the jet lag. I want to become a climate nomad in the future. Heatwave incoming? No problem, I'll drive my camper van to somewhere cooler like A Coruna. Too cold? I'll go to Valencia. It's rarely ever cold there.
