  1. Well, BBC local and national forecast suggested a covering was possible for ALL of London.
  2. Wet snow here now! I presume this is due to evaporative cooling rather than a generic drop in dew points (don't have weather station set up). Anyone concur?
  3. Countryfile forecast intimated that there could be a few surprises from the "wrap-around" tomorrow night. Mentioned London in this respect - something I think Steve alluded to earlier...
  4. Latest Met text update not good: Headline: Tonight, very cold, icy. Some snow by morning. This Evening and Tonight: Snow showers across parts of Kent, perhaps giving local falls. Otherwise, a dry, frosty evening but clouding over with outbreaks of snow moving in towards morning. Snow fall will be mostly slight but icy conditions will become quite widespread. Minimum Temperature -3 °C. Monday: Icy with a slight snow cover early on, some light snow for a time then turning less cold with rain and sleet, perhaps heavy for a time, thawing lying snow. Maximum Temperature 5 °C.
  5. With all eyes on the UK, it is of course turning more wintry in the Alps too! Snow has reached the north-western Alps this afternoon with 20cm+ likely by tomorrow lunch in Wengen (John)!
  6. I think that's as good as I could have hoped for from the GFS. Big step in the right direction but we're not quite there yet. Roll on the ECM!
  7. Just back from road trip around the Haute Savoie. Generally speaking the snow was still excellent above about 1500m. Below this level, however, the numerous freeze/thaw cycles + some rain on New Year's day meant that conditions were hard and icy. Natural skiable snowline on north facing slopes about 1000m and this rule could be applied to most of the northern french and western Swiss Alps. Beginning to turn colder tomorrow with snow for some over the next few days but as we all know, very difficult to know what will happen next week.
  8. And now the Foehn. Temps could reach 16 degrees in some northern Austrian valleys tomorrow (20 even according to Meteosuisse in some Foehn affected Swiss valleys). Better news mid-week but still not particularly cold...
  9. Next lot of bad weather is well and truly underway in the northern and western Alps, thanks to the warm front. Started as snow to about 1000m in the French Savoies, a bit lower even in the the Swiss Valais, but I expect the rain/snow limit to rise rapidly now and reach 2000m or higher later this evening. Sunday and Monday will be exceptionally mild, esepcially in the west, before cooler air makes a comeback later on Christmas day.
  10. Evening all. I'm in the Tirol (Hochfugen) right now and can confirm that there has been a massive rise in temp in the last couple of days. Rained a bit up to 1500m today with a few cm of fresh higher up. No need to worry though, cover is still good all the way down to the Inn Valley at 500m. So much going on in the Alps right now, but the most the most eye-catching story for me is the 1m + that Serre Chevalier in the southern French Alps has received in the last 48hrs. Here, the avalanche risk was 5/5 today, very unsual indeed in this particular area...
  11. Well, today was almost as perfect a day as you could wish for in the Alps - if you don't mind the cold! (Almost) wall to wall sunshine, frigid temperatures and an exceptionally deep snow pack in the north-western Alps (2-4 times deeper than average for the time of year). Starting to turn milder tomorrow, with more snow for some over the next few days, but at higher altitude than we have seen recently. More thoughts on how good an early season this is in my blog http://www.weathertoski.co.uk/weather-snow/blog-is-this-the-best-ever-start-to-the-ski-season/
  12. Hello everyone. I haven't posted here before but I have studied and written about alpine weather and snowfall patterns all my life and now run a website www.weathertoski.co.uk I deliberately avoid automated feeds and personally update the site daily. Would be glad to throw in a few comments and opinions in here this winter...
