The Alps Snow thread Season 2013-14
weathertoski replied to J10's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I have my concerns too but to be fair, given the huge number of resorts they cover, it's a pretty good info service for your average skier. Snowfall totals are an inexact science at the best of times, but the way they are published in Europe (as compared to N.America) is particularly haphazard. Over there, at least it is fairly clear what time frame you are looking at - new snow in 24hrs, new snow in last 7 days. Here, many resorts just give you a rough estimate from the last storm which may mean one day or, if it suits, may mean 2 or more. This is the sort of info the Ski Club have to rely on as there is no culture of consistency and official bodies like Meteo France, SLF a) don't cover all ski resorts and b) don't easily give up their information. One of the few public sources of properly measured snowfall is on the Swiss SLF site but it takes experience (and geekiness!) to read between the lines - i.e work out exactly which figure relates to what resort (if any) and at what altitude etc! -
The Alps Snow thread Season 2013-14
weathertoski replied to J10's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Yep, encouraging start to the Alpine season, though not quite as outstanding as some sectors of the ski press would have you believe! Very difficult to gauge intensity and distribution of snow this week but beginning in western Italian Alps tonight & tomorrow then other areas coming into play as the week progresses. -

The Alps Snow thread Season 2013-14
weathertoski replied to J10's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I'll be doing an update on my site shortly but as expected there has been a lot of snow at altitude across the Alps overnight. Milder today with the rain/snow limit around 2300m in the western Alps, still 1500m (roughly) in the eastern Alps but rising. -
The Alps Snow thread Season 2013-14
weathertoski replied to J10's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Hi, yes, lots of snow falling across the Alps again tonight, particularly in the north but with warmer air edging in the rain/snow limit (currently between 1100-1400m) will rise to 2000 or higher by Wednesday morning. More snow is likely at the weekend but any falls to lower levels will again be temporary. Whatever the case, an impressive base is starting to form at high altitude particularly in the west. -

Some straw clutching for snowless W. London. The cloud sheet has finally moved away and already the sky to the north is littered with small cumulus. Some convectional showers later perhaps?- 775 replies
