  1. Hi Staffordshire - snow prospects for next week in the Alps are very uncertain at this stage. Certainly not much likely early in the week. When/where are you going?
  2. Hi John, here is a shot from Cauterets courtesy of the lift company. It was taken about 10 days ago but says it all!
  3. Snowing nicely here. Settling on cars, grass, some roofs but not roads or pavements.
  4. Typical, just as I had given up all hope and was ready to turn in, it starts snowing and is now beginning to settle on grass, cars etc!
  5. It took all day to get from rain to sleet. Now it's turned back to rain!
  6. Rain has turned heavier with very first hint of sleet "splatting" on velux windows.
  7. Hi John, yes sun for some today but snow showers did continue in the north-eastern Swiss Alps as well as parts of Austria. Engelberg now has 500cm up top, the highest figure in the Alps! All eyes on the southern Alps later tomorrow and Monday with some significant snow for many Italian resorts. I will be in Madesimo on Monday so will try to report back (assuming I can get out of Heathrow!) Snow forecast for Milan (where I am landing) too! Whatever happens, I am guaranteed some action!
  8. Reports of thundersnow in northern French Alps this evening as active cold front moves through!
  9. Well, there you go! Latest ECM now has the low in a prime spot in the Med to deliver snow to the southern side of the Alps on Monday- including Livigno! I'm actually off to Madesimo next week, which isn't far away, so will be following with particular interest.
  10. Def staying cold for a good while yet. Can't see a huge amount of new snow for Livigno though. Most of it over the next few days will be on the north side (particularly NW side) of the Alps. Generally speaking just a few dustings on the Italian side - though things could change next week...
  11. A lot more snow to come for the northern Alps this week, particularly the north-western Alps. Somewhere like Avoriaz could easily clock another meter of fresh in the next 72hrs. Less snow, generally speaking, for the southern Alps but conditions here are still very good.
  12. Hi Nick - yes I was in the Haute-Pyrenees last weekend on what was supposed to be a multi-centre press trip, but there was so much snow, many of the resorts (eg La Mongie) were cut off! It then rained for 36hrs (to 2200m) before dumping it again on the Saturday night. There were some disgruntled journos but meteorologically speaking it was quite a trip! Pretty sure I have never seen any Pyreneen resort hit the 500cm base mark - or even close!
  13. Some extraordinary weather in the Pyrenees recently. Cauterets now has an upper base of 475cm! The highest in Europe (by a mile).
  14. This from the Met Office regarding the radar on Tuesday evening: "Thank you for your further email. We are sorry for not recognising this in the first instance but on further investigation, it seems the radar was down on this occasion. One of our scientists has given the following comment: 'In this instance the radar was giving false returns, what we call anaprop (anomalous Propagation). Usually our system is able to realise this, but sometimes it is fooled into thinking it is precipitation, either because the anaprop moves, or it changes in intensity, making it think it is real. These anaprop incidents are often cause by low level temperature inversions in our lower atmosphere.' I hope this helps answer your query.
  15. Sorry if this has already been discussed, or is off topic, but did anyone come up with a satisfactory explanation for the misleading radar returns last night? I queried it with the Met office and they fobbed me off with something about there were variations in precipitation intensity but certainly no problem with any radars...
  16. Steady light snow but no chance of it settling for the moment...
  17. A few tiny flakes in the wind now but you need the eye of an obsessive and a good lampost to spot them!
  18. Latest BBC forecast has eastward limit of the snow just to the west of London...
