  1. I am only about 10 miles to your east and could see it kicking off over the Heathrow area but bizarrely it never really made it here, grrrr!
  2. after a bit of a lull, distant but frequent thunder to my south again
  3. Def a bit of sleet mixed in these showers here but you need a trained eye (and a velux window) to spot it!
  4. Skies clearing here after some extensive high cloud earlier. Good for surface cooling. Feeling optimistic!
  5. The good thing about the Grand Massif area is that there are lots of trees for bad weather days. I would rather be there next week than in, say, Tignes or Val Thorens, even it it means putting up with some rain lower down. The area above Les Carroz is best for bad vis skiing if you can get over there.
  6. The models are playing mind games again today with wildly different outcomes for early January. Still optimistic for a major pattern change but can't rest easy yet...
  7. Lovely shape to the end of the latest GFS op run! You gotta clutch at some straws at times like these...
  8. My theory is that as long as it's sunny and uncrowded, most people are happy, even with minimal snow cover. In situations like this it's clouds and crowds is what will cause problems. Looks like there will be plenty of sun over the next week or so, but I dread to think what is going to happen when the everyone descends en-mass after Christmas (at least in the major resorts)...
  9. A few cm of snow above 2000m in some north-western parts of the Alps today but rain below (e.g. Morzine) and the vast majority of the Alp remained dry. One thing we can be certain of is that there won't be any significant snow in the Alps for at least a week, quite possibly longer. The models have been hinting at a pattern change towards the New Year but I'm not convinced yet. It's not going to be pretty when the serious crowds descend on the 26/27th...
  10. 6.4c max at 2800m (La Masse above Les Menuires) today and 12.4c at 1850m in Alpe d'Huez!
  11. So, drawing on some minor positives, we have 10-20cm of new snow above 2000m (locally a bit more) in the Austrian Alps this morning, at least away from the far south. 5-15cm at altitude in the northern Swiss Alps and 2-5cm (which fell on Tuesday night) in the northern French Alps. This won't really change the overall situation though and below 1700-2000m it was mostly rain. Staying mild until Christmas and beyond with no widespread/significant snowfall in sight...
  12. As expected, a little fresh snow last night/today across the northern Alps, mostly above 1800-2000m but it won't really change the overall situation and there is zero chance of a proper return to winter before Christmas. Attached image is from Val d'Isere this morning where there was 3cm of new snow. It fell to 1600-1700m, a little lower than expected, due to the enclosed nature of the valley (the warm front couldn't quite "flush out" the relatively cold air in the valley bottom).
  13. The charts remain absolutely shocking for the Alps. Yes there will be a little snow at high altitude in the northern Alps tonight/tomorrow, but it won't change the bigger picture, and there is absolutely zero chance of significant widespread snow before Christmas - quite possibly into the New Year...
  14. Latest GFS op run is an X-rated horror show for the Alps!
  15. It has actually been known to rain as high as 2700m in the north-western Alps, even in January.
  16. Still looking like the north-western Alps will see the heaviest snow this weekend - possibly 1m or more at altitude in some favoured parts of the Savoie/Haute Savoie (France) and the western Valais (Switzerland)...
  17. Looking very promising indeed for this weekend with (as things stand) the heaviest falls likely to be across the northern and western Alps. Snowfall amounts across the southern Alps less certain - it all depends where any secondary lows form once the initial flood of polar air takes hold. Full blow Genoan low looks unlikely though. .
  18. Some remarkable temperatures were recorded in the Alps yesterday including 19.5c in Val d'Isere (1850m) 10.5c at Weissfluhjoch above Davos (2691m) and 2.8c at the Aiguille du Midi (3842m)!
