  1. Is it my imagination or are those showers making better progress towards C. London than they were earlier?
  2. BBC local graphics seem to increase chances of significant snow over London tonight. Far from convinced!
  3. Latest BBC forecast suggests only south coast (or areas very close to it) will be affected by frontal zone. "10-15cm" poss for Channel Islands though!
  4. Talking about snowfall averages, I am in Warth-Schroecken right now in the Austrian Vorarlberg, THE snowfall capital of the Alps. Here the average seasonal snowfall is 10.6m taken only just above resort level at about 1600m. However, with typical timing, I have picked the warmest week of the season so far with not a flake of new snow in sight! +8 degrees at 1500m today due to Foehn with really cruddy snow off-piste. Still, some interesting and classic Foehn cloud formations. Mostly cirostratus (= flat light) with the odd break caused by lee-waves and some nice lenticular formations above the higher peaks (see image).
  5. Agreed. At resort level Avoriaz has the highest average snowfall in France - not far off 8m. Obergurgl's average is closer to 4m, but it has far more consistent snow quality due to lower (and less variable) average temps and humidity
  6. Yep - despite my affection for Morzine, it remains one of the highest risk resorts for rain in the Alps! I have an article on my site "avoiding rain" but in a nutshell, aim for high resorts set deep in the central or south-eastern Alps further away from the influence of the Atlantic - eg St Moritz and Obergurgl. Here rain is vritually unheard of in mid-winter whereas in the northern french Alps it has been known to rain to 2500m or higher, even in January.
  7. Hi Snow White,Yes this is one of my favourite areas in the Alps - learned to ski in Morzine in 1978! Totally agree that it is more interesting than La Plagne. You did have good snow though, and this isn't always the case here of course...
  8. Classic Foehn conditions forecast for the north-western Alps middle of next week...
  9. Glad you had a great time and sorry about the confusion between Folgaria/Folgarida! Easy mistake to make!
  10. Today is a good example of a set-up conducive to heavy snow over the eastern Italian Alps - eg Folgaria, Folgarida (and more generally the Dolomites) that were mentioned here last week.
  11. This weather reminds me of the godforesaken month of Feb 86. Dull, raw but ultimately very little snow - at least where I was at the time (Hants)
  12. A cracking start to the busy half term week. A bit of cloud and the odd flurry in the eastern Alps but generally speaking lots of sun, lots of snow and still fairly low temperatures. Great news for the industry, as this week also sees the highest number of newcomers to the sport, and good/bad weather/snow can make or break their experience.
  13. Aha! Well spotted - yes that could explain a lot! Folgaria is right in the southern foothills and would have got more snow than Folgarida! I was in Madesimo earlier in the week and there was actually more fresh snow in Milan and around Como than in resort, which is set quite deeply in the mountains. Problem solved. Apologies for the confusion!
  14. Sorry guys, I don't mean to be difficult, but there has not been 70cm of fresh snow in Folgarida, nor anything like it. Yes, there has been a little fresh snow and yes, conditions are good but I can assure you that 70cm of fresh is WAY off the mark. In fact that is about the base depth at resort level.
  15. No way. Snowed a bit on Monday but prob only 5-10cm or so!
  16. Ok - my take on things is that there will be very little if any snow in the western Dolomites (Folgarida) for the forseeable future, so expect some decent weather - which is what you want if you haven't been before. Difficult to know what will happen later next week but at this stage I think it is unlikely that you will see any significant snow. For a major dump in this part of the world you ideally want a big low in the near Med (ie Gulf of Genova) with air of arctic origin wrapped in it returning north on it's eastern side. There are many variants but that's the most basic way of looking at it. Little or any snow will reach the Trentino in a northerly set up. There has to be some energy from the Med.
