  1. Hi guys! Live 193m ASL just outside of Huddersfield-near Longwood-any thoughts on snow settling at this height?smiliz39.gif

I would suspect the chances are the same as many other locations near the Pennines tonight; indeed there will be some degree of precipitation although the temperatures do remain in question ... I don't expect more than a few cm and wouldn't be surprised if there is no covering this time.

Still looking decent though for Sunday Night, despite this though, unfortunately, this chapter of the cold spell looks to be over by Monday except for of course the highest of hills.

Speaking of the 'highest of hills', there is no doubt that the Peaks, Pennines, NYM and parts of the Lakes will see a good covering (there is no way that there will be a battleground between sleet/snow/rain).

Dew Point is -2 here at the moment, but it might rise later and also mind you I am in the east of the region.

Odds on for tomorrow's match at Boundary not to be on?!!!

  2. Should we be concerned about that pattern emerging which may scupper the chances of cold in and throughout December? I have been very encouraged thus far for a cold & possibly snowy December. But it just seems to me despite having the background signals in our favor to receive a cold & possibly snowy December throughout the uk things may not go our way. Granted we are seeing cold wintry conditions in the uk now and snow for some northern parts of the uk. But you have to ask yourself ' Cold but uneventful days but the further north you go you may see some snow ' a typical winter pattern?

I do hope some don't think i am bordering on imby territory because i am not. It just seems despite all the signals pointing to cold or very cold in December we may not get the luck we need countrywide.

I fully understand this view, however we have to understand that the models so far don't even go up to half way through December!

We can't ask for cold right through, sometimes there has to be a let up ... but the models at the moment of course don't run as far as beyond mid month. Hence, we are already slap bang in the middle of -4 nights and +2 days ... so what more can you ask for except from a nice little snap to kick the season off?

  3. I'll keep my fingers crossed for that smile.png

mmm...you might be in a bit of no man's land - BBC Lincolnshire provides you with links to Look North and East Midlands today so probably the Midlands thread?

Just depends if Oldham council are interested in doing there job and gritting the roads like they usually fail to do.

  4. Some of the foggiest conditions I known for awhile driving back home from Mcr to Oldham - traffic was quite busy too. Should be another crisp sunny day tomorrow once the sleet/rain mix clears through overnight.

According to the Met Office, most of it should fall as snow overnight before turning to sleet briefly

  5. If i'm not mistaken the frontal fall on the 4th gave us about 6 inches of wet snow which was quite a suprise when I went outside to work that morning.

I believe areas further north than ourselves towards the Yorkshire Dales got even more.

TWS was this not followed by a threat of a fall of biblical proportions with severe warnings out but then it went the way of the pear right at the last moment.

I remember all too well heavy widespread snowfall was forecast for the 4th or 5th but most of it fell as rain, but it still stayed cold for a few days more until about the 10th before what I believe was a rather quiet and average like December with no more wintry conditions until January

  6. TBH I think it looks to be an interesting week coming up.

Unsettled Atlantic spell with coolish uppers could give some surprises to the region in the coming days.

I think that the Pennines, Lakes, NY Moors etc will always be favourite for settling snow but I wouldn't rule out some at lower levels, esspecially if a NW airflow pushes showers into Merseyside and through the Cheshire gap.

I don't think for one minute we are talking disruptive snow but it could start to look just a little festive as we start December and one bonus is that Diane Oxberry won't be saying "at least it will be mild" much in the coming days.

Anyway welcome to Net Weather SouthPennine88

Thank you very much! Always exciting to join in with the discussion especially at a time like this.

    That dreaded word... marginal.

It looks very marginal for the North East tonight.

I'm ever the optimist though, so I think we'll get some laying snow.

A fair few members from the North on here may well remember the 2nd (or 1st it might have been) of December 2008, where a cold shot similar to this resulted in a covering for the usual places including a widespread covering around the Pennines and Cumbria of around 8cm ... Perhaps tonight's forecast snowfall might just provide something similar? I have light snow forecast here from 2am until 6am, hopefully the thaw won't be too quick in the day and at least it won't cause too much disruption.

That cold snap stands out for me because it was so localized as I said ... there was nothing lower down in Manchester.

Still it was a very decent fall

  7. Yes it was and this is the first winter I remember because I was only 4 at time.

I remember overflow pipe freezing over outside resulting in water tank overflowing and flooding house.

Also built my first Snowman. :-)

I understand this is heading slightly off topic, but I believe 68/69 was also the subject of when the Emley Moor TV mast in Yorkshire collapsed due to a mass build up of ice on it.
  8. Well, someone looking to navigate the Huddersfield Narrow Canal today might be disappointed as it has remained frozen today as well as the locks.

Let's hope it thaws out soon.

Milder but wetter weather looking probable Monday before fluctuating temperatures kick in
