  1. It's Alford Firewood, but pretty sure the guy only delivers locally. Think he works offshore on the rigs and it's a sideline for him.
  2. We just get whatever the local guy has, as his prices are reasonable and he stacks it in the wood store (most others just dump it on driveway). We've certainly used birch, from trees we had taken down, which was OK. We do buy some hardwood to occasionally mix in but I can't be sure what it's been. We mainly burn softwood though as its cheaper and the stove is only usually on for a couple of hours in the evening with us sitting in the room so no hassle topping it up. I have a big stack still out back from a storm felled fir still to split. We've tried the heat logs from the likes of Tesco/Aldi and although they do burn well I found they sooted up the glass no matter what I did. If we want a longer burning stove, at the weekend for example, we use smokeless coal ovals. When we lost power for days last year due to the storm they kept the stove going almost overnight, keeping the house at a bearable temperature even first thing when we got up. I always make sure we have at least one bag in the garage just in case. Ours is a multifuel stove though, they might not work well in a pure wood burner.
  3. Cleared about 2 or 3cm of snow from the driveway before leaving from work this morning, top layer was a crust of frozen wet snow so it must have warmed up for a bit before refreezing. Drive to work was OK, mainly wet roads, slushy in places. Overall no real depth to any lying snow between Alford and Westhill, certainly no evidence of drifting despite the strong wind last night. Frequent enough snow showers in Westhill through the day, but again light and brief. Must have been similar at home as there was a fresh layer of frozen snow on the driveway when we got home. Currently -1.4C after a high of 1.8C.
  4. Two flashes of lightning in fact, a couple of minutes apart, both fairly closely followed by the thunder. Still mainly missing the snow here and temp has climbed to 1.3C.
  5. I think it was as much for the wind aspect combined with the snow, as it is quite breezy. Plenty of reports of problems being caused by drifting in the NE corner of Aberdeenshire. I'd agree with @Scepticalthough in that for the Alford area it's been a non event so far, with not much snow and therefore no real problems with drifting. Still time though. Edit: Interestingly where most models a couple of days, ago were showing a warm up again at the weekend the GFS has gradually transitioned to a coldish weekend and beyond. Even the ECM has toned down the mild pulse, just not quite as much as the GFS. That's for NE Scotland anyway.
  6. Loch effect snow? That's a novel idea. Hovvered around 0C here during daylight hours and beyond after an overnight low of - 2.3C. Currently 0.2 C and just started to snow, can't really tell how vertical or horizontal it is as its far too dark. Wind was whistling through the trees earlier though.
  7. Low of -3.8C overnight with a localised half a cm or so on my car, nothing much just a little further east. High of - 0.5C makes it an ice say, currently back down to -2.0C. New weather warning now covers me, so that's any chances of snow jinxed.
  8. Just thrown the dog out for a last pee before bed and it's snowing lightly with a dusting lying. Temp currently -0.8C, having dropped sub-zero about 7pm. Currently I'm pinning my hopes on Wed. XC weather, so GFS, has consistently shown something around then, although varying run by run. Will likely be toned down or dissappear entirely as Wed approaches, especially now I've mention it here.
  9. Went for a walk this afternoon from the Bennachie visitor center with the wife and dog, but stayed lower down and it was very pleasant. A few light snow showers knocking around the area but nothing heavy or sustained enough to leave even a dusting. Around 2C when we were out but around 0C when we got back home after a stop off for a cup of coffee with friends in Kemnay . My car and the driveway already iced up at 17:30 when we got home.
  10. Looks lovely outside with blue skies and sunshine, but at 2.4C with a stiff breeze I'm assuming it'd feel raw if I could be bothered to venture outside. Overnight precipitation must have been largely liquid as no sign of anything more snow like even on higher ground around us. I'll see what this week brings. Forecast is mainly dry for here, but with a multi day yellow warning for snow and ice almost reaching me I'd have to be very unlucky not to see something.
  11. 2.4C here this morning and just 6mm of rain recorded. Hoping to see some some snowfall later today or overnight into Sunday. XCweather says snow, MetO app says rain, Yr.No suggets a mix of everything. Beyond that a cold week ahead all but certain now, out to at least Thursday. Not really much snow on the forecast though, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
  12. Looking forward to the weekend onwards... Not that it'll happen like this. As for today, less said the better, very wet.
  13. 5C overnight and currently 6C with broken sunshine and a stiff wind. Feels mild out of the wind but darn cold when exposed to it. As expected, RIP to the last patch of snow in my garden, which disappeared overnight, leaving just a soggy patch of grass. hopefully not the last to be seen this winter.
  14. Silly story as in reality there's been some skiing so far in Scotland, but quite limited. I've not seen Glenshee open much more than a half dozen lifts max, it was closed yesterday due to strong winds, and today they only have the basic slopes open due to snow loss. The Lecht has possibly fared a little better as it's easier to get open with limited snow, but today their slopes are looking thin. Not really checked the other resorts as they ain't a potential day trip for me.
  15. Yep, a long way out but it's the most promising we've seen for a while... Currently 5.7C after a high of just short of 7C between 6 and 7am. A bit grey looking outside but windless. Snow patch in the garden is just hanging on but I think it'll finally dissappear today, but that's not bad as it must be nearly a month old by now? Many of the normal dog walking tracks, both in the forest up the hill, and in the park down in Alford are still thick with ice. Amazing how long it's lasting.
  16. Definitely a frost this morning with the air temp briefly dropping below zero around 9am. Started bright with little cloud but clouded over now, still only 1.8C. Surprised to find, after being away for a week, there's still patches of snow surviving from the falls in early Dec, mainly along the roadsides and field margins where it had drifted. Still one decent patch in our garden too, which I'm thinking of renting out to frustrated skiers given the lack of snow in the Alps. Still a cool and changeable outlook going forward, but maybe frustratingly not quite cool enough for the Scottish ski resorts?
  17. Currently in the central belt where its been grey and damp the last couple of days, but it was a very nice drive up the M6/M74 on Monday. Bright, sunny and clear then, with no road closure incidents unlike the trip south. A rather boring forecast through to the end of the weekend at least by the looks of it unfortunately.
  18. Happy New Year, in 2.5hrs, from a rather mild and damp Lytham St.Annes. Will miss the cold and potential snow further north but I'm sure there will be plenty more chances of that to come.
  19. Aye, we're just south of Carlisle despite setting off at 9:30 or so. Weather we've driven through wasn't too bad, but earlier stuff shut M9 at Stirling, delaying us as we detoured though the town. M74 southbound then very, very slow between J12 & 13. Still closed N bound when we passed, with all other surrounding roads looking gridlocked. As road rather GFS 12z snow predictions for 1st Jan, almost certainly overcooked as at top end of its own ensembles for precipitation. If I'd been at home I'd have been wishing otherwise, as it's predicting over 30cm snow at my house.
  20. M9 closed at Stirling too, currently sitting in queue of traffic approaching the junction the're diverting off at. Knew it'd be an interesting journey but thought main motorways would be Ok.
  21. We're in no hurry so it'll be early afternoon at best before we get south of the central belt, hopefully by then the worst will have passed.
  22. Lovely squall line showing up on the radar... A covering of snow here, not sure quite how much as still too dark to tell. Going to be an interesting drive down the A90, M74, M6 later.
  23. Nothing much changes then. I remember many moons ago being near the plateau of Ben Nevis, a hill it's very easy to 'walk off' if you get it even slightly wrong. Came across a guy and girl in trainers and jeans, snow on the ground, in cloud so very difficult to differentiate ground from thin air, no map or compass. On meeting them, "any idea where the top is guys?". We suggested they think again. Anyway, dog walk this afternoon on the tracks up the hill was in decent coverage of lying snow from yesterday but ended with falling rain despite it still being 1C. Mixed bag looking ahead. Heading to NW England for New Year with the wife's parents on Friday, which could be an interesting drive. Hopefully worst of the rain will be past by the time we get to the Central Belt and down the A74.
