  1. Precipitation seeming to beef up a bit on the radar now to the north and east of Aberdeen. Still nothing too heavy falling out of the sky in Dyce but the last light shower did leave slumped, slushy looking deposits on the bottom of the car windscreens. It's a start I suppose.
  2. So I'm in the new Amber Warning area, well that's just killed off my chances of seeing significant snow then. I did like this.... "especially over upland areas above 150 metres where blizzard conditions are expected" so 150m is considered "upland" now? Forgetting about the potential for later, the now is rather unexciting. Temps seem to have steadied out at around 2/-0.8, with virtually no precipitation, snow or otherwise. One good thing about that is, at least the ground seems to be drying up a bit, so if anything incoming is snow it might have a better chance of lying.
  3. Well the temp has been dropping (1.8/-0.8 @11am in Dyce), the wind is a brisk easterly, but the precipitation has really dropped off. Best we're getting at the moment is intermittent snizzle. We need some beefier stuff to start appearing out over the north sea to make this more interesting.
  4. Early sleety rain turned to snow at around 8:15am in Kemnay. It was making an attempt to lie on the grass but after a quite miserably wet weekend it was struggling. In fact it's so wet out there it's hard to believe that anything could lie today. It was also noticeable on the way into work this morning that the temp gauge on the car showed 1degC all the way from Kemnay to Dyce, so the wind has done it's job of mixing the surface air cos there's usually a couple of degrees difference. Rain/sleet/snow stopped for the moment.
  5. All quiet on the north eastern front this morning. We had a string of snow showers in Kemnay yesterday evening but only really leaving a dusting on top of the snow that was already lying. This morning so far is calm, dry and partially cloudy, with a temp of around -3 degC at 8am. We've now completed 4 consecutive days of lying snow on the ground in Kemnay for this spell, might be struggling to complete a 5th if rain moves in as predicted. Not bad for March though, and even here at work in Dyce we still have snow in the car park, albeit a thin covering that tends to come and go depending on the exact combination of sun and snow showers..
  6. Heavy snow showers piling in overnight and this morning. The drive to work was through one of them and despite the roads being generally quite wet the snow was heavy enough to start lying on them in places. That shower lasted the whole journey, so half an hour or so, much longer than any of yesterdays. Without having time to actually measure it, I'd estimate Kemnay accumulated around 0.5-0.75 inch overnight. Dyce I'd say has had even more than that as the car park at work that was clear when I left last night probably has at least 1.5 inches of new snow lying on it. No doubt the sun between the showers will do some damage, especially as the temperatures rise during the day. For March it's been quite impressive, in Kemnay we've now had snow lying constantly since Sunday morning so 3 days and counting. From the charts posted it doesn't look like it'll be the last we see snow either (although we're booked to go away in the caravan to Grantown-On-Spey at Easter so I hope the heater in it is working 100%).
  7. Well as predicted the sun yesterday reduced the snow cover in Kemnay substantially with grass showing through even where it started with a 2-3 inch covering. After dark though the showers coming from the north turned the tide and this morning we have an all over covering of fresh snow, but maybe only half a inch.
  8. Well there's been a fair few snow showers in Dyce this afternoon, a couple of them pretty heavy. They have been short-lived though and the remaining snow cover that existed this morning has been disappearing due to the warmer temperatures today. We've still got a warning out for overnight, and forecasts of continuing showers, so maybe the process will be reversed once it begins to get dark.
  9. Snow shower currently in Dyce. Doubt it'll lie though as air temp is a bit too warm and the snow is not heavy enough to overcome that.
  10. Even up here in the NE where you expect snow on a regular basis, it can still cause chaos on the roads. There's that many factors that contribute... 1) Roads at near capacity in rush hour so when everyone slows down due to snow/ice it all just gridlocks, and you cant grit a gridlocked road 2) Poor driving, one accident and everything grids to a halt 3) Roundabouts and traffic lights on hills (major cause of problems in Aberdeen when it's icy/snowy as vehicles, especially trucks, can't get moving again after stopping) 4) Timing...heavy snow falling just as rush hour hits is a real killer. If it falls before people leave the house they'll think twice, if it falls after they do (even if it is forecast) it's too late usually. As for "only travel if necessary", I've never really understood what exactly is "necessary". I may not think it is "necessary" to get into work but I'm not sure my boss would agree. On to this morning.....another lovely bright and sunny start to the day. A warm +2 degC at 9am too, compared to yesterdays -8 degC at the same time. Snow cover held up quite well yesterday in Kemnay. South facing areas, especially tarmac, lost a lot of their cover but the more shaded areas, or where it was deep on grass areas, still have a full cover. I suspect today will be different as it's likely the sun, combined with higher air temperatures (yesterday was around +1 degC max) will do a bit of damage. Not sure I'm convinced of the BBCs forecast of more snow showers later today and overnight for the NE either.
  11. Sun's been working here in Dyce too with the thin coverings on roads, paths, carpark etc largely having disappeared. The covering on other areas such as grass is still there though. I'll see how much remains when I get home to Kemnay where the covering was deeper to start with. I suspect it'll be a similar story though since we've had wall to wall sunshine all day so far. Just a pity I'm sat in work, and with the blinds half closed too as it's just too bright now the suns moved around to this side of the building.
  12. Continuing this mornings theme with a glorious morning here too. It was a sunny -8 degC in Kemnay at 8:45am this morning when taking the youngster to school. Snow cover from yesterday is holding up well and is still powdery despite the sun. It was kind of weird stood in the school playground, snow all around, obvious chill in the air, hat and gloves on, but my back roasting due to the sun beating down on it! Roads up here are fine, with the exception of the housing estates where yesterdays melting snow has re-frozen. Only a dusting overnight, just enough to cover any paths that had been cleared.
  13. A few pictures from earlier today. At around 9:30am, https://forum.netweather.tv/gallery/image/17746-back-garden-930am/ And then again at around 11am after the main band of snow had moved through, https://forum.netweather.tv/gallery/image/17748-back-garden-1100am/ https://forum.netweather.tv/gallery/image/17747-street-1100am/ Last I measured the depth was around 8cm but we had some more snow after that so I'd say 8-10cm in total (or 3-4 inches in old money). Went for a walk with the dog around 2pm and it was 'squeaky' snow. By then the showers had largely stopped and where it was through to the tarmac it was melting, but no obvous melt on the grassy areas and still clinging onto the trees. For the 12hr period from midnight when we went to bed and there was barely a dusting, and midday when the main band of showers stopped, I'd say it was well up there with the best accumulation of the winter. We've done not too bad for snow this winter either so for a March snowfall to rank amongst the best is doing well. We've had deeper overall, and I doubt this'll last 2 weeks on the ground that other snowfalls have lasted, but it's a nice extra bonus.

  15. Met Office, your 'avin a laugh. We're neither high ground or that far inland but we've got more than 5cm already and its snowing again, often quite heavily.
  16. Well that came as a bit of a surprise! Expected a light covering at besf but woke up to a blizzard and a covering thats currently 5cm deep on the doorstep. Eased off now but the band in thd North Sea has still to hit yet...bring it on.
  17. Current weather here.....same as everyone else has posted this morning. The rain forecast hasn't hit yet, well not in Dyce at least, other than some light drizzle. The forecast on the BBC news this morning contrasted somewhat with what the Met & BBC websites are showing, for Sunday at least. The TV forecast suggested snow showers down the length of the East coast on Sunday, although not in "disruptive" amounts..
  18. Well this morning we're into the longest spell of rain I've seen for weeks, cos it's been raining since sometime before I got up at 7am and still is. Cool and very misty too so not a pleasant day at all. Whatever the models and/or Steve Murr say the BBC Website forecast for Inverurie has us cold and wet for Thu & Fri then cold and dry Sat - Mon, not much sign of snow on it at all. Then again it often changes several times per day, sometimes quite significantly, so there's still hope yet.
  19. Damn it, that lovely orange ball in the sky has been replaced this morning with cloudy, grey murk! Cool easterly breeze too. Not sure what to make of the weekend onwards. I was just getting used to the idea of some nice spring weather and, with the light evenings getting longer, feeling more inclined to try to get outdoors more. If we do get snow though I hope that its a decent fall and not just wet, sleety stuff that doesn't last.
  20. First post for a bit after an enforced break. Last week in the Aberdeen area was generally quite pleasant, with frosts in the mornings before then warming up to feel almost warm at times in the afternoon sun most days. Saturday saw the first rain shower I can remember seeing for nearly 2 weeks(?), timed just as I was going out for a run so I got a bit damp. Didn't last long though and Sunday was back to dry and sunny. Today so far it's cloudy, calm and cool (but not cold and no frost this morning), continuing the mainly dry theme. I see the second half of the week is looking more unsettled and damp according to the Met/BBC forecast.
  21. Sounds like interesting potential, but will that cold pool stay just teasingly out of reach? For now, another cool start to the day but cloud cover seems to have prevented a frost. There were a few flakes of snow falling earlier though, but only if you looked very closely.
  22. In complete contrast to the last few mornings today has dawned to cold, grey and drizzle. Nothing much to commend it, other than perhaps the lack of wind.
