  1. I see it too, but then again for the first time today we've had a shower in Dyce heavy enough to leave a dusting on the cars. Still a very short shower though!
  2. Right, come on, own up, who's built a precipitation barrier on the East coast around Forfar & Arbroath? That band of precipitation just doesn't want to move North of there, been stuck for at least 2hrs now! We've got an Amber warning for areas West of Aberdeen that I'm sure just about covers my house, yet so far what has probably fallen wouldn't make a single snowball.
  3. Well here at least the temp is going in the right direction, from a high of 2.5/-2.3°C at 07:00 down to 1.5/-2.7°C at 12:00 (Dyce Intl Airport readings).
  4. Wierd thing with the updated Met Office warnings is that on Tue the Amber area isn't completely surrounded by a Yellow. Maybe the Yellow hasn't been updated yet. Anyone else having trouble with the Traffic Scotland website this morning, seems very slow to me?
  5. Well we've been getting some light snow in Dyce for the last 10-15mins, which as I type has appeared to stop. I assume it's coming from the bands of showers coming from the NE rather than anything coming from the main system to our S.
  6. I think if this keeps up, or fails to get going more like, then they'll be more toys flying about than snow.
  7. A wee bit of snow overnight in Kemnay but nowhere near the deep drifts I was hoping for to keep me off work (never a realistic prospect). So far, as others have said Aberdeen/Dyce is sat at around 2degC, brisk wind, but no precipitation. All I want this winter is a proper blizzard, with good drifts and a day off work. After that it can do what it likes!
  8. Well I got out for my play in the snow, with the pretence of walking the dog, took a trip up Mither Tap on Bennachie (not right to the top as the last bit is awkward enough for the dog when there's no snow). Amazing what a difference there is in the snow there, even at car park level. It's only a couple of miles further west and 100m higher but the snow is lovely squeaky stuff that makes perfect snowballs, compared to the wet claggy stuff in the village. Not as much snow up higer as there was at the start of Dec though, but it's almost powdery and much easier to walk in than the heavy deep stuff last time. Need a bit of a freeze now to preserve the snow we have, in preparation for Monday.
  9. Now had snow of varying qualities falling for around 1.5hrs, longszt yet. Temp still a little too warm though so what is lying is soft and moist. Time to take dog for a walk as youngest not wanting to go out to play in it.
  10. Well for those in Aberdeen, there is snow inland. Here in Kemnay we've not got as much depth as I'd have hoped for as I think most of it fell as that graupel stuff rather than nice fluffy dry stuff. In fact I think temps are marginal here too as when I let the dog out earlier the snow in the garden looked a bit on the wet side and the snow falling at the time was bordering on sleety. Certainly enough for the kids to have some fun but any rise in temperature and I think it could easily thaw. From what I saw of the radar I expect areas further south would be better as the showers seemed to be heavier and more frequent there.
  11. That snowshield seems to extend over Kemnay at the moment too. I'd suggest Alford, not too far away, is getting plastered though. Surely those lines of showers are bound to shift at some point and Aberdeen will be under them for a bit.
  12. Sorry it's not great in Aberdeen but inland a bit its a little better. We've just had a shower that's lasted longer than most at around 30mins. Everything that wasn't white beforehand is now, but I'd still not say there's any real depth to it.
  13. Confirmed! Can't ever remember that happening before.
  14. ...and I can see blue sky again so that was just about the predicted 5 mins. Impressive when it's on though, if it could only last it'd accumulate quite fast I'd say.
  15. You were right, just gone extremely dark in Dyce and started snowing again. Lets see if it is a 5 minute wonder again or not.
  16. As others have already posted there was a second heavy shower in Aberdeen/Dyce area earlier. Wind gets up quite a bit during the showers too. Can't see us accumulating much though as they are quite short-lived events and there's little sign so far of the number of showers in the North Sea increasing. The Amber warning seems to be a reaction to the area that has been getting the most showers so far. Looks like Glenshee Ski area may get a decent amount of much needed snow and the webcam shows some hardy souls out making the most of it (http://m.webcam-hd.com/ski-scotland/glenshee)
  17. The problem with snow showers off the North Sea is they can be rather hit or miss. So far in Dyce this morning we've had one glancing blow. Heavy whilst it lasted but very short lived. I'm hoping they pack in a bit closer together this afternoon. We not sent anyone down to report from the far SW as it looks like Stranraer and the surrounding area might be getting snow now?
  18. Yeah that sounds like what it was. Anyway, not enough action on the radar worth hanging around for so off to bed to see what tomorrow brings. Snow for the kilted masses hopefully, and picture of BBC reporters in Wales and SW England no doubt.
  19. Kemnay, Aberdeenshire (see my sig). Anyway, that was a real hit and run cos it's gone aleady!
  20. Lamppost Watcher No134 reporting in..... Just started snowing here and it's heavy and coming down at a 45 degree angle. I actually heard it rattling off the window, 5 mins ago I looked outside and could see nothing but the moon. Expect it'll be brief but already turning the paths and road white again.
  21. Ah, now you're testing my memory (and I hope it isn't all muddled up with several events all merging into one). Here goes....I'm sure it was the same event that meant I didn't get to college in Glasgow for a week. Some searching also suggests 85/86 was a cold snowy winter, which would fit in with my first year at college. I've also seen reference whilst searching for "12inches in late November 85" in reference to Scotland. So if you really want to do it then search the charts for late Nov 1985.
  22. As a lad I lived in a village just outside Airdrie. I can't remember exactly what year, but I'm guessing mid-late 80s, we had one huge snowfall. I remember it for several reasons, (1) My bedroom faced East and I watched the showers moving in, and the snow in our front garden deepen, until it was well above the low fence (first time I'd ever know it to be that deep). (2) It drifted across the fields and the gaps in the hedges. At our back gate it wast waist deep as it drifted through the gap between out house and the one next door. (3) Digging my dads car out in the mornings and pushing it out of the street so he could get to work (Ravenscraig). We lived on a bit of a hill and a JCB (neighbors daughters boyfriend) usually turned up and dug out the roads during the day, allowing my dad to get home OK. Then it would snow again and /or drift overnight, with us having to dig him out again the next day. (4) Taking our sledge down to the local bakery to get bread. All the roads were covered in snow and the main road from the M-8 into Airdrie was a lorry park. So you can get good snow in the West from an Easterly, and I'm sure it lasted several days too.
  23. Since I haven't had a chance to check the models etc, is the whole system that was due to come in being pushed back west or is it tilting backwards (i.e. becoming more horizontal than vertical) as it moves in? If the latter I would assume that's probably good for us as it would surely mean a colder, more Easterly than South Easterly wind direction over Scotland?
  24. Well, well well....you go to bed thinking the snow is on it's way, for most at least if not necessarily for this area. Then you get up in the morning and lo and behold the snow isn't really on the way for most but your own chances have maybe increased. Maybe we should all just forget about models, forecasts etc. I'm sure it was more exciting as a kid when you took no notice of these but, oh my, the joy of waking up and looking out to a covering of snow when you had no expectations of it being there. As for the current day, a lot warmer here this morning, with temps around freezing rather than yesterdays well below. Still looks and feels wintery so for us at least lets hope any showers in the next few days stay as snow and freshens up the current cover.
  25. Can I request the wind turn a bit more easterly to push that band of precipitation currently sat out in the north sea onto the east coast? Pretty please!
