  1. Light snow back on here, but earlier covering just about gone. Unless it gets heavier and more sustained I don't see us getting any accumulation that could be called anything other than a dusting.
  2. Well it was trying to snow in Kemnay at 9am, but barely noticeable (the biting cold wind was noticeable). A bit more snow in Kintore on my way through but really just small drifts in the gutters etc. Dyce seems to have had a little more and it was snowing briefly not long ago so looking white on the roads and paths at least. The main band of precipitation seems to be crossing the country to our south so not expecting much more unless we get some showers coming in behind. The temperature at 9am in Dyce was 3.3/-3.6 so not sure if anything we see will be rain or snow as I haven't fathomed out the whole temp/dewpoint relationship for snow yet.
  3. Sounds like some 'interesting' conditions being had by some tonight so enjoy it. Nothing here so far and given the strenght of the wind driving the showers i'm a little surprised none have breached our mountain snow shield. Patience though as when the flow turns more northerly the snow shield will be bypassed and we should get our turn.
  4. I think Tuesdays Met Office warning map will be in with a serious chance of winning next years Turner Prize! If anyone can understand all those overlapping areas then I'm impressed. Cairngorms snowshield working well here at the moment, only breached at around 7am this morning with a brief snow shower, which didn't lie. Unless the wind turns more northerly then I cant see us getting much snow/sleet/rain despite being in the yellow warning area.
  5. Morning all. Good day out at Glenshee yesterday but everything aches this morning. Snow conditions were variable but overall better than i expected. Bitterly cold in the morning due to strong N wind despite sun being out. Better in afternoon as wind died down a bit. Yesterdays snow in Kemnay no w gone going by a quick glance outside. Snooz, no footie yesterday but todays games may have a chance.
  6. Looks like I'm getting a day on my own on the slopes, been given a day pass by the wife. Only real option for me is Glenshee scottishandy. Nevis and Glencoe are just too far for day trips, as is Cairngorm realistically unless it's the only option. The Lecht is the closest, OK if I was taking the family but rather limited if on my own and able to wander. That just leave Glenshee really, which is fine by me. Everyone spread out across all the centres though, give each other some space. Got a covering of lying snow here in Kemnay now, fell sometime between 6 and 7pm I think. Wasn't expecting more than a bit of sleet.
  7. Thanks for that. I must admit not having thought to check the Winterhighland forums.
  8. Very similar here this morning i.e. cool, grey and drizzle. One of those mornings where sitting at a desk in an office doesn't seem as bad after all. Hopefully the weekend holds a bit more potential. Even if there's no snow, just to see some sunshine would be nice! Anyone been to Glenshee this week, if so what are the ski runs like? I never quite trust what the ski areas say on their sites. "Covering of fresh snow on a firm base" usually equates to "Bloody hard, teeth rattling, snow with patches icy enough to skate on", or, "Spring Snow" means "Sink into slush and come home soaked". I don't expect it to be deep power (it does happen, one of my best skiing days ever was spent playing in Coire Fionn in deep powder) but something reasonably soft would be good. I'm getting itchy feet and fancy a day skiing this weekend, probably Saturday. Not sure if the wife and kids are up for it, although I brought up the possibility last night. If they aren't, and I can swing a solo trip, even better i.e. no "daddy ski school" lessons required.
  9. Trying to brighten up a bit in Dyce now but still quite grey and damp. Earlier, around 8am, it was moderate to heavy rain/sleet in temps of 1-2degC on the drive to work. Much less windy here today than yesterday.
  10. Having just worked my way through 12hrs of MT posts that would be my summation too. The next week or so doesn't look like a descent into a sustained cold spell for Scotland but it will be on the cold side, with wintry outbursts and mildish interludes. Edit: No reports from our windswept north/northwestern outposts this morning on how they've fared?
  11. A bit breezy here in Aberdeenshire but nowhere near the wind speed further north and west have been suffering. A nice bright day which is a welcome contrast to yesterdays dull and dreich offering. Snow in our garden in Kemnay is down to the piles cleared from the drive and paths and even they are looking rather pathetic. Other places in the village (including the football pitches) and the surrounding countryside still have some large patches where it's been deeper and/or shaded. Nothing much left in Dyce though that I can see. Now off to see what the mood is in the model thread this morning......
  12. Met Office Amber warning now for the North West of the mainland and most of the islands. Here it's mild, and dull, although I did see the lovely sunrise this morning that Northernlights mentioned. Rather uninspiring weather really, but glad to see there's some possible colder shots now showing up in the models, especially as last week it was all doom and gloom and "no way back from mild from here" in the MT.
  13. Well we're just about hanging onto the snow, for now. Paths and roads are clear again but the grass is generally still covered, although you can just about start to see it in places in our garden. Quite impressed at how quickly it's thawed, especially overnight into Sunday morning, without really turning into the normal deep slush hell. Now I'd reluctantly rather it went so that the lads can get a game or two of football completed before we get another cold spell. It can stay on the hills though, especially the ski slopes.
  14. Looks like sleet/rain outside now in Dyce.....and so begins the descent into a slushfest. Maybe it'll be better inland a bit.
  15. Still snowing here in Dyce, not as heavy as earlier but I'd still say moderate rather than light. Fair accumulation on the cars outside and although it looks kind of moist it is still sticking on the cars and the existing snow. Personally I hope the heavier stuff out West doesn't get here until I get home, although the traffic cams suggest the main roads aren't too bad at the moment.
  16. Snaw peltin doon in Dyce! Started in Kemnay around 7am and seemed to get progressively heavier on my drive to work in Dyce around 8am. As others have suggested this must have come in faster than expected as the forecast on BBC website for our area wasn't suggesting snow until the afternoon and light snow at that. Funnily, yr.no yesterday did suggest Kemnay would see snow starting after 6am.
  17. Hey, I thought this was all supposed to be over! Overnight snowfall in Kemnay, not a huge amount but a good covering. Wife attempted to get to work but turned around and came home the roads were that bad. The two village Primary schools attempted a late, 10am, start but admitted defeat and closed. Academy still open by the looks of it but only for those that can walk there. I got to work on roads that were much worse than yesterday, and with very slow traffic at times. Now in Dyce we have the heaviest shower of snow I've seen this winter!
  18. Well after clearing the driveway and paths again earlier this evening I finally got around to sticking a tape measure into the snow in the back garden. Undrifted depths of 6-7 inches (15-18cm), most of which was probably in last 24hrs. I suppose I therefore have no reason to complain
  19. I used to live in one of the houses up behind the hospital and that hill was often quite good for catching the snow. Had some large drifts up there one year too. I knew as soon as they closed the schools the snow would stop! Luckily since the wife was there already I'd no need to rush off to pick up youngest (or to try to get one of the older two to get him). They didn't give much notice though, announcing at around 1:30pm they were closing at 2pm .
  20. Snow really coming down in Dyce now, last fling before it dissipates?
  21. Well Snooz has beat me to the Kemnay weather report but I can confirm a decent overnight fall. Total chaos in our house this morning watching school closure updates (our village ones open but lots elsewhere closed), and deciding whether the wife should attempt her cross-country journey to work (no, she's a teacher so is going to help out in one of the local schools for the day). Didn't have time to measure the snow depth so I'll go with Snooz's assessment, but certainly a good few shovel-fulls when clearing the drive. Roads to Dyce not too bad, especially once I got onto the A96 at Kintore. Dyce doesn't have the same snow depth but definitely some accumulation since yesterday and it's still snowing on and off.
  22. Having looked at the garden when I let the dog out I came to a realisation. I'm gauging the snowfall against Nov 2010, when we'd to dig the cars out ever morning for over a week, we had snow avalanching off the roofs in amounts substantial enough to shake the house, bring the gutters down and knock panels off the fence. Now that was exceptional and I shouldn't really be expecting the same. Prior to the last 2 or 3 winters, with the exception of last year of course, what I have lying tonight would probably have constituted an exciting fall of snow.
  23. Have some faith Aberdonians, for one the gaps on the radar to the south are finally closing up, and secondly I'll be leaving work soon so that is bound to coincide with some heavy snow so that Dyce grinds to a halt.
  24. Hey, why didn't you do that eariler? I's started snowing in Dyce now.......and stopping again probably......oh well.
  25. That's just an attempt by the GFS to take what lying snow we have, scour it from the surface, and dump it all in the North Sea! It would give us a "memorable event" though.
