  1. Alderc 2.0 It is...there's this to look forward to
  2. Funny how weather can play out at times. We could have a snowy breakdown to a virtually nothing here today gone tomorrow "cold" snap, when there have been numerous occasions where more potent prolong cold spells have gone out without bang.
  3. Manchester METAR goes for snow Temporary from 08 at 06 UTC to 08 at 12 UTC Visibility: 3000 m Broken clouds at a height of 600 ft snow, Liverpool goes for rain, snow Temporary from 08 at 05 UTC to 08 at 06 UTC Visibility: 4000 m Broken clouds at a height of 600 ft rain, snow,
  4. SunnyG Did it not occur to you that the coldest winter month of the season could still be above average? There have been plenty of examples.
  5. Joe Snow I think that was due to the front not pushing further NEwards. We had an amber warning for the NW put out on that Wednesday, it look like it could be another early February 1996 event but then the models changed, developed a low and the front came in on an angle and was unable to push further NEwards.
  6. Friday's FAX chart Large scatter has appeared on the GFS 0z run ensembles in terms of my location from about the 9th Feb For instance, on the the GF06z run yesterday, there were only 2 -ve 850hpas for the 9th. The GFS 0z run ensembles now has 16 Preston, there were only 4, now its 18 Carlisle, there were 16, now its 28 We still haven't a clue what is going to happen
  7. Spah1 Wetterzentrale Reanalysis archives WWW.WETTERZENTRALE.DE Reanalysis archives of the past decades covering Europe.
  8. Joe Bloggs I posted a few months back of early March 1965 where incredibly there was hardly any snow around these parts whilst other areas were being buried by snow Seems incredible looking from that chart
  9. Cumbria received a big snowfall back on the 9th February 1900, a day or two before the south of the region was hit by a big snowfall
  10. 2023 Late May and June were great as was early September, the late November cold snap producing those unusual optical effects but the second half of the year was a washout. Better than 2022 with a bit more variety but not a brilliant year.
  11. Jackski4 Let me guess. Someone who lives at least 1000 miles away getting all emotive as though the weather in this country even though it is not going to affect them and yet never talks about weather where they live, add in the poor man's "Oscar Wilde" comment thrown in. Another member who initials reminds me of that of the Indian Ocean dipole who will promptly disappear come when spring comes. There is no such thing as the "closed" season when it comes to the weather.
  12. A Face like Thunder Remember it well However it was all gone by that Friday, at least for low ground. The snow cover never even made it into the following weekend, don't recall a snowy breakdown here.
  13. The complexities of snowfall can be baffling at times. I have seen snow falling when the 850ha is above 0°C. There was the snowfall during early February 2018 that wasn't even marginal and yet not one snowflake stuck or even look like sticking and marginal snowfalls where it does stick. I have seen rain, sleet, snow alternating. The start of March 1995 cold zonality started off as rain that suddenly turned to ice pellets and then to snow that started to stick. Late February 2005, when eastern parts of Greater Manchester were getting a dumping, the snow turned to rain on lower ground and it was mostly dry for the rest of day with no apparent change in the airmass.

  16. I'm afraid I can't access my old profile (Weather-History) anymore and had to rejoin. I couldn't get an e-mail to reset my password. Nothing in my inbox nor my spam folder.
  17. Goodbye to my old profile (Weather-History), hello to my new one. What a pain this e-mail authentication has proven to been.
  18. LetItSnow! July 2023-January 2024 has recorded over 1000mm for the NW England/N Wales region, probably the wettest such period on record for the region and someone brings up a drought watch thread who says they live in the region? Need to turn off the rainfall taps first!
  19. July 2023-January 2024 is around 1015mm for the region. Total has gone up, thanks to the downpours of the evening of the 31st January. That's an average of 4.7mm per day. Compare to Jul 1995-January 1996 which was 374mm with an average of 1.7mm Considering those rainfall totals, we have been pretty lucky flooding wise.
  20. July 2023-Jan 2024 approx. 1008mm for the region (141% of the 1991-2020 av.) July 2000-Jan 2001 was 934.8mm Jul 1954-Jan 1955 was 996.8mm
