  1. Another poor summer for thunder for around here. We had a reasonable storm at the end of last summer but on the whole, the last 4 summers have been poor for thunder.
  2. The last day of summer 1998 was a wet one for parts of Ireland as a slow moving front brought heavy rain 74.9mm at Cork 36.1mm at Valentia 23.9mm at Shannon Airport
  3. Manchester summer index says best summer since 1995. June and August were pretty reasonable with July as the standout. This was not the case with 2006, as August was a poor month. So for me was not as good as some see it and the index bears this out. For England and Wales, it was the dullest August for 20 years, which shows, sunshine alone how mediocre that month was. 2003 was a good summer but during the exceptional heatwave of early August, only 3 days got 27C or above in that period here.
  4. Bridlington is on the east coast, I seem to recall that there was an easterly flow during the height of the heatwave of early August 1995http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZMMgawYgy0
  5. Interesting you say this because the figures don't seem to bear those facts. For instance, Manchester airport only got above 20C twice that month and that was at the end of the month. There were some pretty cool days, there were 7 days when the maxima never got above 15C.The 13th was a really cool dayhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq3cw0jZdFE
  6. I don't recall any hot spells during September 2001. If I remember rightly no maxima of 25C or above was recorded that month.
  7. A sign autumn is on the way, when you see the Pleiades rising in the night sky.
  8. August 2006 was 174It was the dullest August since 1986 ie for 20 years. So it was a poor summer month.
  9. August 2006 was poor here, which pulled down the index value for that summer. I think this August is going to be the sunniest here since at least 2003.
  10. It based on the mean maximum temperatures, sunshine hours and rain days and at Manchester. So it is dependent on local data and not national data. How do you know that summer 2006 was twice as good as summer 2013 unless its a figure of speech? Summer 2006 was excellent up to the end of July but the August was unimpressive. Summer 2006 was basically a one and half summer. August 2013 is much better than August 2006.

  12. You say 12 weeks until the end is in sight, which is technically correct but in reality you don't notice it until mid February onwards. It gradually increases then picks up pace after Imbolc. Between Samhain and Imbolc, is the darkest 90 or so days in the seasonal cycle. Infact, it is not until after the first week of March that the sun finally sets after 6pm for Manchester.
  13. That's a matter of opinion because it was cloudy and dull, I rather take the previous year's Christmas Day which was brilliant crystal clear blue skies and gloriously sunny.
