  1. There was some appalling weather for most of England and Wales around the 7th and 8th July 2004 when a depression pushed up from the Bay of Biscay deepened bringing heavy rain and NEly gales. This caused flooding power cuts. Withering recorded 107.9mm on the 8th July 2004 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3870635.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/3875839.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/3875699.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3874597.stm Jay Wynne warns of approaching storm ITN reports on 7th July 2004 gale BBC Weather 8th July 2004
  2. What is there to discuss? It hasn't started yet. No matter how you try, you always end up comparing it to the past. It was the wettest summer since..it was the coldest since....etc or if you are making predictions, it will be a summer similar to xxxx. The SSTs are similar to that year......People are going to give their opinion on what summer what they want and what they don't want. They are going to reminisce, I hope we get a similar storm to xxxx this summer.

  4. Uploading forecasts from summer 2004. That was a strange summer. I remember the transit of Venus and how hot it was that day then we had a really chilly night later that June. There was that horrible day in early July with a strong NEly blowing. August felt tropical during the first part but was a right old thundery washout. During early July, there were some of the loudest thunderclaps I have heard, the windows rattled during the early hours.
  5. Interesting because I thought it was a huge disappointment! I remember the storm and I could hear the radio crackling away like anything. When it struck, there wasn't that much thunder, saw hardly any lightning and there wasn't much rain for a storm and it certainly didn't go dark for street lights to come on.
  6. Not really, it was a mild stormy wet month,
  7. Great opportunity to see the lingering twilight this evening. Venus is on view to the NW at the moment.
  8. There must have been a very warm pool of air over Scandinavia which then tracked across the North Sea to the far north of the UK. It was unusually warm in the far north for time of year. Baltasound in the Shetlands got to 19.1C on the 8th May 2004, whilst many places much further south didnt even get into the teens that day.8th May 2004http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxrzjQvk3E4
  9. It's going to be a noteworthy statistic if doesn't beat spring 1962 CET. Coldest spring for 50 years? When was the last time, we said this was the coldest season for at least 50 years for the CET? It would probably have been winter 1962-63.
  10. Remember this. A dry morning then thunderstorms broke out and they drifted southwards. Very strange to see a thunderstorm moving from north to south. They were quite potent.
  11. He's mad I tell you! "Time for weather, ain't that clever".

During the 3 Headingley Tests of 1978, 1979 and 1980, 19 hours and 28 mins was lost in 1978, 17 hours and 54 minutes in 1979 and 14 hours and 7 minutes was lost in 1980 There have been a few Test matches completely abandoned without a single ball being bowled because of the weather. New Zealand v India: December 1998 Pakistan v Zimababwe: December 1998 because of fog! West Indies v England: March 1990 New Zealand v England: February 1988 Australia v England: January 1971---> led to the first one day international being played England v Australia: July 1938 England v Austalia: August 1890 The Trent Bridge of 1926, England v Australia, there was only 50 minutes of play before heavy rain ended the match There was one Test Match where the rest day was brought forward because of a solar eclipse. 16th February 1980, the second day of the Jubilee Test between India and England at Mumbai (Bombay) became a rest day because of an 87% solar eclipse that was to be visible from Mumbai. Some games had a delayed start for the 11th of August 1999 solar eclipse in the UK. The Middlesex and New Zealand match was delayed until after the height of the eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurred in the Caribbean a day before the start of the 4th Test between WI and England at Georgetown, Guyana. It was a 68% partial eclipse from Georgetown. This has been mentioned before but 4 of the coldest winters of the 20th Century have coincided with England's tour of Australia: 1928-29, 1946-47, 1962-63, 1978-79. They also missed out on some other notable cold and snowy spells such as 1950-51, 1954-55, 1986-87, 1990-91, 2010-11. They toured Australia during the severe winter of 1894-95
  14. Oops....can anyone spot Rob McElwee's mistake?

  17. What a spring. I remember the chilly springs of 1986 and 1996, May 1996 was a cold month but it wasn't a winter like month. April 1986 was cold but in effect it was just another March. March 2013 wasn't a winter like month, it was a winter month. The chill carried on into the early stages of April. Spring this year effectively didnt get going until after the first week of April. It was the coldest first half to spring since 1917 for the CET. The second half of this spring has brought some warmth but it has been stuttering. Thankfully, we have avoided a washout month, this spring which is one plus.
  18. Here's an ITN news report on the famous Glastonbury mud bath of 1997
  19. Hadley CET: 10.5C Manley CET: 9.8C Both to the 20th Quite a discrepancy.
