  1. Hard to believe this was 10 years ago BBC news report BBC live report on event
  2. Something "odd" happened on the 8th May 1993. Pressure was highest over Scotland but during the early hours, heavy thundery rain broke out across central Lowlands and slowly moved southwards before dying out. So what caused this? Upper level trough? Michael Fish forecast The forecast for the previous day suggested maybe a few showers but did not expect the extent of the rain nor thundery nature.
  3. 16th September 2001 23rd September 2001 30th September 2001
  4. 9th March - 8th April 2013 CET has come in officially as 2.4C Which is really remarkable, when you consider it was 0.1C colder than January 1997 and that month was 1.3C below the 1961-90 average for January. It was only 0.1C warmer than December 1995 and that was 2.3C below the 1961-90 average for December. It is probably the 2nd most remarkable 31 day CET period after the late November-December 2010 period, in terms of coldness, in the last 25 years.
  5. One thing also to note, there were 5 sub 200mm summers during the 1960s for England and Wales. So they weren't all total washouts which is another thing that is often painted about those summers.
  6. Manchester Summer indices suggests that the summers of the 1960s were not quite the disaster as they are painted to be. 1960 217 1961 203 1962 197 1963 194 1964 197 1965 189 1966 192 1967 223 1968 215 1969 234
  7. I have been monitoring an apple tree on Chat Moss. This was it 2 days ago. Only started to bud.
  8. It looks likely that we are going to record 4 consecutive below average seasons. Summer 2012, autumn 2012 and winter 2012-13 were all below average and against 1961-90 average at that. It's going to take a truly exceptional May for spring 2013 not to be below the 1961-90 average. It needs to be record breaking against 1971-2000 and 1981-2010 averages.
  9. It got to 25C, 20 years ago, on 30th April 1993
  10. The bane for eastern areas, a spring easterly that brings cool cloudy weather to the east and warm, sunny weather to the west 28th April 1993
  11. Mid May 1995 did see some snow in places
  12. I can't recall such a frosty spring as this. Yet another frost this morning down to -0.6C. Manchester Airport has recorded 28 air frosts this spring thus far, unsure of ground frosts but I would think it is about in the low 30s.
  13. The twilight is starting to linger. Still see after 10pm.
  14. The reason I was vague about the average is that I was referring to the two consecutive Aprils that were at least 0.5C below the then "current" 30 year average of the time ie in this case 1941-70. It could have been 1931-60, 1921-50 etc. if it were say the two Aprils in question were in the 50s or 60s etc.2000 and 2001 only became at least 0.5C below the average was against a future 30 year average. It wasn't at the time and that is what I was meaning, of that time.
