It’s the same old story every winter, don’t worry it’s only December. January and February look promising, just for January to go down the pan as always and then February goes out with a whimper with a slight cold chase at the beginning of March.
I understand some got lucky over the past week, but for the south it’s been terrible in terms of snow all winter.
it was curtains when the low went into France, soon as it was modelled, it was game over

I think at this rate we could be hard pushed to even see a cold spell in spring!
we will, snow though doubt it, just for Scotland and hills, PV weakens, Atlantic slows down, cold spells March and April practically guaranteed

I think that winter is over and the next cold spell will be in the spring.
post I've agreed with the most on here, enough of the hopecasting MJO, NAO cold forecasts

This is why I don't hold my hopes up anymore when it comes to cold. It almost always gets watered down, pushed back or cancelled altogether.
Milder than average on the other hand almost always verifies.
don't mind this early Spring, but this will downgrade to 9 and windy/wet

Sleet/snow shower in Daventry for 5 minutes just now. Temp dived from 9c to 3c in no time at all.
very unusual for January! more likely in March or April

Yeah bit of noise around 5-9pm but that was it. As for the cold spell, I didn't see a single flake of snow. Roll on warmer weather, hope we see a fat Bartlett for February.
saw a bit here, but best by far was 2-3 Dec, as for Feb, certainly wouldn't say no to an early Spring, but dreading it will be low after low and storms

I suppose every March since 1988, aside from 2018, sucked for a snow fan.
I rate March 2006 (most of it) highly for its bright, sunny weather and low humidity.
but I remember countryfile/bbc weather saying loads of snow for me on 12th, got nothing while Shrewsbury had a dumping

Yeah, I think that's a fair assessment. As I said above I rather liked March 2006, aside from the dismal final week, the afternoons of which resembled November with the clocks moved forward three hours.
March 2006 sucked as a snow fan

An average summer would be a good month (June 2023), a bad month (July 2023) and an average month (August 2023). But, because June was good and July was bad, I see why people thought Summer 2023 was bad
June gave us north sea muck though

Sunrise will still be around 0645 under BST on March 31st. A hell of a lot earlier than now!
but what is it on March 30th

Agreed, and also with your other post which mentions the recent cold snap preventing early flowering in the garden.
The way I see it is that even when background signals are good, getting any sustained length of winter cold in NW Europe is highly unlikely, frankly impossible these days.
Whenever a cold spell like this one breaks down, or like the one in Dec 22, its always replaced with a powerful & relentless barrage of zonality, sometimes, as was the case for the SE in Dec 22 for the remainder of the winter.I remember winter Scandy highs from 30-40yrs ago bringing subzero temperatures and battleground snow to the SW many times, not any more, these days it’s all about the Bartlett High during winter months.
Cold & snow chasing for the UK, especially in the South is a hapless hobby these days, it’s quite depressing.
Anyway, roll on the clocks going forward and the spring time.
Hate Spring forward, not a fan of dark mornings, will be just starting to get light, then dark again

GFS 00Z, 0-384, surprised if we get a max below 10, never a fan of 2nd half of Jan and Feb, tends to be more westerly than Nov to mid Jan

After this weekends storm for most away from the west conditions look decent for mid winter, mild, relatively bright and not particularly wet.
It won’t be long until we are exiting January and for those of us who look forward to the warmer months and additional daylight spring will be within reaching distance before long however I’ve already got the gut feeling either March or April or even both are going to be very disappointing months.
late January is when it can become warm, unlike Nov and Dec/early Jan, still not improving on a morning though, pitch dark still at 7am

A bit of Friday banter - still have the posts of 2 weeks ago in my head.... I’m confused….
- ‘’features and troughs popping up everywhere’’
- ‘’get the cold in first’’
- ‘’booom’’
- ‘’Game on’’
- ‘’People in the mod thread moaning at people complaining the setup isn’t good enough’’
- ‘’Best Synoptics I’ve ever seen’’
2 weeks later - not one flake for 90% of the country
I should write a book of these quotes really, happens every time
My peeve is the incorrect saying of wanting lows to track south (into France), we missed out on a snow day, and many members (snow fans) were happy because it kept cold in longer, well actually it hasn't and many southern members been snow free!
never want lows to track south!

There hasn't been a single flake of snow over here. But we have had the next best thing which is cold, sunny and frosty and is miles better than what we endured thoughout last month.
few flurries here but as expected when the snowfest went south, to the pleasing of some on here) it's been dry

Why is it so easy for cold to be pushed out of the way nowadays?
In the 80s, cold blocks would put up a real fight to hold back the mild and wet weather, and we'd have snow events which would last for hours.
And sometimes the cold would win, and we'd be kept cold.
But now, it's as if all the rules have been changed.
Feb '94! but nowadays Atlantic storms through

Yep. Wonder if certain people in the model thread will finally realise that.
mentioned it in other thread, member from SE didn't agree, now that location is snow free
never liked the lows tracking south, to prolong the cold, now turning mild with a whimper

Terrible cold spell here in terms of snow. Saw a bit of sleet after a heavy rain shower at the weekend and had a brilliant frost last night that froze the water fountain in the city centre, but that's it. No cold Weather again for the foreseeable on the models. So Feb looks like the next chance, at the earliest. Then Spring is just around the corner
I find that we seem to have a better chance of snow here in March than any other month nowadays. Had a decent amount last March, after a relatively snowless Winter.
Thats why we do not want the lows going south, we end up snow free

Donald, happens every year, just hope we can have a Spring like Feb, rather than autumn like
