Harry233 There was only one bad summer in the 1990s and that was 1998. 1993 wasnt a great summer,i rate it as 'average',it had average rainfall and average sunshine but it was rather cool but those conditions didnt stop us making hay on the farm that year,it doesnt need to be hot just dry and sunny, lovely.

  8. Interesting thoughts from different sides but just like forcasting today they can get it very wrong. The truth is that the weather in early June 1944 was as bad as it can get and personally i think Eisenhower wasnt the sort of man to keep waiting around so decided to go anyway and despite the forcast to be much calmer i dont think it actually was, many of those soldiers drowned before getting to shore especially the floating tanks, they are all on the seabed with the soldiers still in.It is a little puzzling however that they didnt wait for calmer conditions as it wouldnt have made much difference to either attack of defend. We are all made aware that we could have been beat on the beaches but in reality the Germans thought we would land close to Calais and Normandy was very thinly defended as was the entire Western front except for the Calais area.As for the war being won in the West on that day that simply wasnt the case, the Germans were already beaten. There were 34 divisions facing Western allies and 187 divisions facing the Russians, such was the fear of the Russians the Germans sent no extra forces from the East to face the West.

  11. Addicks Fan 1981 Not sure where you get that from? 1993 and 2007 maybe similar in terms of summer temps but that is where the similarities end certainly in these Pennine hils.2007 had way more than double the rainfall of 1993s summer.1993 was rather a decent summer albeit rather cool whereas 2007 was completely rubbish and extremely wet in June and July but had a decent August that was cool. The only poor summer of the 90s was 1998 with 1993 on my list as 'Average' whereas 2007 is well inside the 'Poor' bracket.

  18. BlueSkies_do_I_see In March 1965 25 degrees was recorded on the 29th March, this i believe is the outright March maximum recorded at Whitby which was amazingly the hottest day in Whitby for the whole year.Just as amazing is that on the 3rd day of that month Corwen in Wales recorded -21.7 deg,the coldest day of the year for the whole country, anamazingly cold temperature for March, only 2 winters have recorded lower in almost 30 years!

  22. 2009 was a rather decent summer for some maybe but unfortunately if you were a farmer trying to make hay it was a bit difficult when it rained every day.I can picture the weatherman showing the same weather chart with Atlantic lows one after another week in week out.it was rather pleasant with lots of sunshine around but then cloud built and it rained,an hour later back to sunshine. We had to wait for mid August for any settled spells to arrive.
  23. Dry and cloudy with sunshine breaking through mid afternoon for the rest of the day,max 15 deg,min 9 deg
