what is ball lightening,is that a fireball, have googled it and it's debatable wether it exists or not.about 3 years ago i was haymaking on a lovely summers day.it was dark about 1.00 am when i witnessed a ball of fire flash across the sky very close probably less than a mile away looking like it was heading for the ground have never witnessed anything like it but i couldn't hear anything as i was stood next to a running tractor but it was definately a flame like ball!!!!!!!!!!!
am sorry i wasnt taking a dig at you personally,i guess there are a lot of younger members out there that must be loving these last few years.i suppose the long spell between 1995 and 2008 were pretty uneventful and where i thought the 70's/80's were normal younger people would think 95/08 were.i asked an old guy recently wether 47 or 63 was worse and he said 1940 was every bit as bad.have looked on met office historic station data and round here 63 is third 40 second and 47 worst for temps, amazing how areas vary!!!!!!!!!!!
it seems some of our members must be quite young, comparing this winter to the last 10 years sure its in the top 3!! i am in my 40s and i remember 78,79,81,82,83,84,85,86,87,90,93,95 all beat this spell for snow disruption and most of them for cold
i guess if you like snow its been a reasonable 2 week period been better the further east or higher up you are but i dont think many have suffered much disruption and there has been little wind .for 2 weeks lying snow..respect...for monster drifts and disruption3/10.for me snow is 1979 cold..1986 almost 6 weeks subzero jan23 to march4....respect
i'm not bothered so long as we get plenty of it .i'll settle for a really cold wet spring so long as we get a good summer .in the last 6 years we have only had one good summer month, june 210
i lived high in the pennines for 35 years and i'm always the last to take off my jumper but i can stand heat.usually those that can stand cold cannot stand heat, you havnt said wether that is the case
if the met office get their forcast right there are going to be floods.snow then heavy rain sunday, frozen ground, floods, maybe not 47 or 81 but hebden bridge might need their dinghys
great info i thought i had read that before still amazing.i worked on a farm at 360m all the 80s and it seemed a very common occurcnce for his daffodills to get flattened by the snow and they dont come out till late march or april up there especially in those winters .it seems a long time since ive seen that.......!!
march can be anything in these parts seemed it seemed to be a winter month in the 80s last year a summer month! i did read in 1965(i think) march gave the hottest day of the year in whitby!!!!!!! how astonishing is that! 25 deg i think
0deg 7am now 2 deg cloudy and dead still snow softening 100mm continuous cover more aver the tops.how much snow tomorrow?met office gave -4 to -6 last night!???
this spell has missed many western areas nice to have snow again fo 2 weeks but can only give 4/10 for temps and 4/10 for snow depths.is it me but these last few years of snow have had a distinct lack of winds it just hasnt drifted that much even over the tops.i havnt seen a real blizzard since 1995 that includes 2010
we had already dug our lane out 3 times this winter level wall to wall then this came and filled in again.our lane was a third of a mile long and it was all shovel work.in january it took the council 2 weeks to clear the roads to the bottom of our lane.we lived at 340 metre have yet to see snow that remotely resembles this winter.drifts lay under the walls well into spring ,not sure whenmust have been into may wish i had made a note at the time.i know they were snowball fighting at cat and fiddle in early june gives an idea.
-1 here sunny but hazy at times.just been to carlisle areas of north west preston area and carlisle snowless(seems strange)called at keswick on way back very snowy but mountains just look covered and dont seem to have deep snow in any gullies
wish i'd been around to see 47 and 63 but did either of these have monster blizzards in december and the third week of march .also snow remained on cross fell till 18th august.respect
i think people have different memories of winters depending where in the uk they are in the worst winters its amaziny how places differ.for me these last few winters are more like the 80s but havnt had the volumes of snow and a distinct lack of wind.we used to have real blizzards even 2010 lacked the winds of the 80s 90,95.maybe we are in a custer of colder winters
