Cold day here never got above 1.4, already down to -0.5 ,still got some patchy snow cover which must be helping keep the temps down. I think if we had a good couple of inches of laying snow we would be looking at ice days at the moment.

It's not even as though we are currently enduring a prolonged zonal period with no end in sight. Quite the opposite in fact, which makes such whinges even more incomprehensible. For a start some of us have 5 or 6 days of very cold weather yet to come. Thereafter, plenty of options are on the table. Even if we end up with a uk high ( IMHO the most likely possibility right here, right now), what happens thereafter is very very much up for grabs and even THAT doesn't even take us to mid month!?
You make a very good point here, from what I remember the February 1991 cold spell started with a uk high, so many options on the table none of which can be ruled out be they cold or mild.

Nipper of to bed, time to crack open the red and open the radar up and see what happens tonight. Fingers crossed lets hope those who haven't got in on the action yet have some joy tonight!

Got a good 3-4 inches of lying snow here in west northants.

Real heavy snow here in west northants.

Well what a day, left home at 7.00 this morning to head up to Barnsley for work and got caught in a huge snow shower just south of Sheffield must have dropped a good 3" inside an hour or so really impressive heavy snow. Then to top it off I get home to northants and it's snowing heavily with a good couple of inches lying. Then get on the forum for a catch up and I read we could be in for a direct hit from a polar low over night!! If Carlesberg did snow.... All this happening on the back of people saying there was no chance of cold or snow till at least the end of February a couple of weeks back and we would be locked in zonal all through January and most of February!

I thought we where supposed to be locked in zonal till the end of February according to some to a couple of weeks ago???, yet we are currently in a cold spell. Can someone please explain to me why when this is the case are people once again making sweeping statements about the next 6 weeks saying we are locked in zonal again??

Could this be the classic situation where the GFS picks up the trend in FI drops it for a few runs only for it to return with a vengeance in later runs? I am sure I have seen this on numerous occations over the last 5 years of lurking/watching models on here. Wasn't that what happened with the famous Ian Brown WTF moment a couple of years back?

Ignor button on overtime this morning, and it's the same people as last year! Normal tosh if it t384 and mild it will verify and winters over for the next mellinium, but if it's t384 and cold it's FI,La la land won't happen like that etc etc etc etc. once again people are making sweeping statements, The weather will do what it wants we are not locked in to cold or mild. We are not in winter 2013/14 last time i checked. I have already seen 10 times number of frosts that I saw last year and have had a dusting of snow on the ground for 6 days, yet 12 days ago I read that there would be no cold until at least the new year, now the same people are writing off jan and feb! Still the weather can make fools of us I suppose. And it probable will me,but chins up coldies here's to a good deep cold spell in the last 2/3rds of winter and hopefully the on set of an early spring to keep the mildies happy!
-
Some poor runs this morning, am desperately looking for the NAVGEM (RIP) for a straw to clutch! Oh well on to the afternoon and evening runs it is then.
-
Mild charts that are dead cert to verify! Bore off! Let's see what churns out over the next week, if it ends up being mild then so be it. Think what really annoys people on here is sweeping statements that right off months of winter for cold, if they are correct then good for them, but please don't keep rubbing us cold lovers noses in it! Rant over.

so after weeks of model watching and anticipating the 'big freeze' all it amounted to was an hour of snow sandwiched in between rain. if that is all that this sodden little island can muster for what is supposed to be winter then that's me done from now on. this country is just utter rubbish for any snow and cold whatsoever.
an hour or so of snow is nowhere near enough throughout the whole winter. fact our winters are getting more like the southern Mediterranean.
Think they are due snow next week....!!!

Awful output for coldies. The models once again over egging any HLB. First it was phantom Greenland heights and now a phantom Scandi high.
Looks like we are in for a couple of weeks of zonality.
OPI and SAI looking shaky to say the least.
It's christmas missing ballon data. Expect flip to cold tomorrow morning!

Good to see the "mild snap" keeps getting downgraded. Hopefully it will be a blink and you miss it 36 hour event!

Normal gumpfy on the mod thread about mild showing up at 240+hrs, therefor it is a dead cert and will happen as exactly shown on one set of afternoon/evening runs. More flapping going on than a henhouse. Let's see how things pan out over the rest of the week before we pass judgment.

So winters over after one set of morning runs?? Que normal round of told you So etc etc. I always thought we should be treating day 10 out put with caution??

Well well just popped outside to put some stuff in the bin and it's is snowing, according to some we had no chance of snow for the rest of the week after Saturday. Just goes to show things can pop up and that we shouldn't take the models or the bbc forecast,s as a given.
