  1. It was weird to go down into Cornwall for football yesterday and coming back having the car lights on at 1730. But it's still my favourite time of year!
  2. Alykes pier (or what's left of it). The times I've sat on this looking towards Kefalonia drinking a cold beer watching the sunset I've lost count. But it can be rebuilt.
  3. I always remember February 1986 as being the most Easterly month with a lot of snow here. Then January 1987 for that blizzard which left snow for weeks on end here. December 2010 was also excellent in terms of cold, but snow here was disappointing. Agree with February becoming a disappointment in recent years although 2018 wasnt too bad at the end.
  4. Some of the stories coming out of Zakynthos arent funny but are still sporadic due to the lack of power. Hotels in my resort have lost roofs or parts of roofs, no running water, no electric most of the time. It's been a dreadful season, first Covid destroyed the UK trade, now this has hit. It's on a par with the Ionian earthquake of 1953 by all account so far but thankfully the death toll is very very low.
  5. Well my good friends in Alykes Zakynthos have been in touch, and whilst they have no electricity in the resort and the water is also intermittent, they've escaped the worst. Most hotels and business have some damage from fallen trees or coastal flooding but nothing which can be repaired/replaced. As expected, the coastal parts of the South of the island have suffered more- sounds bad down towards Lagunas and Kalamaki and the Airport.
  6. I've seen a pressure reading of 978mb for Zakynthos overnight, but where the station is based or how low it got, I dont know.
  7. Unsurprisingly my friends in Alykes on Zakynthos are sharing photos showing the roads around the old salt pans are getting flooded. Whilst Alykes is low down by the sea, during the floods in the winter of 2017/2018 it did come up into businesses on the front. This attached is towards the back of the salt pans and slightly higher up so I can only hope the main road from Alykes to Alyankas is still clear - the bridge there a very low indeed.
  8. I was due to be on Zakynthos now. Knowing the island, expect flooding towards the south side from Kalamaki to Keri, along with flooding due from mountain ranges into Alykes/Gerkas. I've been on the island through fires and earthquakes but never a medicane!
  9. I can't cope with a wet October/November like last year. It destroyed the football season here in the South West Peninsula League and my club Saltash United by March had only played 17 league games out of 38! Just awful every Saturday without fail.
  10. Tonight its 1930 sunset. Its galloping now loosing 3 mins 44 secs per day here. Another 10 days and sunrise will be past 7am.
  11. Blimey. I've never seen the trees so far advanced into brown this far south this early. Walking around Saltram national trust this morning, the grounds are about a month ahead compared to normal years. Horse chestnut rust is very advanced, bit even the oaks/plane/ beech are very advanced and gone at the crown now.
  12. Well, start of the football season and with sunrise at 0641 and sunset 1946 today, it's really getting noticeable. Strange to think Summer has been and gone this year. Horse chestnuts rust clear and some leaves going meaning my main road will turn into a slush brown colour soon.
  13. A nice few autumn storms would be nice, not the rain fest of last year but enough to strip the leaves earlier than normal please?
  14. Its interesting as last night I really noticed how dark it was by 2015hrs. The nights are really drawing in and morning generally the same. Anyone else seeing trees very much darker earlier this year? Theres a line of plane trees on the road into Plymouth City Centre- normally they do go about the end of September but this year its going to be much earlier- they are going over already. Horse chestnuts are rusting as well but those plain trees are very very noticeable
  15. The one ex Hurricane which always comes to mind is Hurricane Charley from August 1986. Now that was miserable August Bank Holiday!
  16. From memory wasnt every long range totally Westerly zonal last year? Berlin, French, Bejing, Cansips. It was just one after another with low Pressure to our North or over us. And then it verified... I've seen a chart showing that the polar vortex isnt projected to be as strong through the end of Autumn into December which may have a good bearing. Any ideas when we last had a very weak polar vortex?
  17. Plus wasnt there a massive storm which destroyed a lot of ice around Canada and Greenland in early July?
  18. My favourite song of all time is Dionne Warwick Heartbreaker. It charted in October 1982 getting to Number 2 but boy the lyrics could be about the missed snow events here in Plymouth! Only to find any dream that I follow is dying. I'm cryin' in the rain. I could be searchin' my world for a love everlasting, Feeling no pain, when will we meet again? Why do you have to be a heartbreaker? Is it a lesson that I never knew? Gotta get out of the spell that I'm under, My love for you My love is stronger than the universe. My soul is cryin' for you, And that can not be reversed. You made the rules and you could not see; You made a life out of hurtin' me. Out of my mind, I am held by the power of you love. Tell me when do we try, or should we say goodbye
  19. That was some squal line. Plymouth is in chaos. Flooding everywhere, 3 foot deep in places in Keyham. All main roads into the City off A38 are closed or partly closed. The roof has collapsed at Dunhelm Mill, Asda closed for major flooding damage. Flooding in Mount Gould, Devonport, Keyham, Prince Rock, Laira where I am, City Centre and Camels Head. Police on the point of declaring major incident.
  20. Well it rumbled on here until 330am interrupting my sleep so I was up for nearly 24hrs yesterday (not a good thing at my age!). Just left with the misty murk you get post thunderstorm now- but hopefully I'll get some proper sleep tonight please!!!
  21. Just driven home from Ashburton to Plymouth after night out and been following some very good lightning I'd guess towards Dartmouth. Its moving down the coast and we're getting some lightning here in Plymouth now
  22. Looking very dark towards South Hams. Hoping that the line of showers electrifies inland like Monday.
  23. Just been on site visit to Jennycliff by Mountbatten station. It's just so hot for Plymouth- no wind but cloud is building high up. Edit- coming out at 29c in City Centre
