The south has not witnessed something like this in modern times!

Radar hinting at some sleety stuff on some of the hills now down south. Poor people affected by flooding. Roads are going to be a nightmare when that high pressure creates those frosty nights

-10-15C uppers with slack winds.. Potentially -4C highs with widespread lows in minus double digits. From a low point to the coldest run we've seen this winter, it's astonishing to see how the 6z progressed. All JFF for now, but very encouraging to see repeated low points in the MO still produce a great end. I can't recall ever seeing these charts in January, truly fascinating.
Could be potentially record beaking low temps with something like that, and snow cover.
Some similarities here; that famous winter!

Definite potential for something wntry with these lps skirting the south next week. My hopes are raised having just witnessed a heavy shower produce a sleety/wet snow mix, temp dipped from 7c to 1c

Temp 7c fell to 1c in minutes during heavy shower just now, turned to sleet then wet snow!

Its already a better set than 6z, far more activity in the -5c to -10c box on the graph for 850mb temps and a few below -10c.
It's a definite banker!
It definitely has a happy ending too!

Another good gfs run . The only thing we’re missing here is a better ridge going towards Greenland and we’d be well and truly in the freezer

I do hope we pull off anArctic Northerly for Xmas
I will say I've no idea what our chances are right now but the further North you go and the more elevation you have I'd say could make a big difference.
Merry Christmas!

See what you’re saying @tight isobar as shown on below uppers.. however so annoying this run as that pesky low over us is now filling in situ and preventing the amazing Synoptics to our north.
Could bring a snow covering before the easterly sets in though?

On the way home from work, the Black Mountains have a dusting on the tops and the tops of the southern Cambrians also from the most recent showers.
Finally some cold in the 'coldest' month!
