Different layers of the atmosphere can have different win directions. Surface flow is Southwesterly (travelling NE), but upper air is a Northwesterly (travelling SE).

Thanks Eskimo, the clouds are quite low, so not much distance in it - hoping it adds to some sort of convergence tonight for some worthwhile snow! As it stands, the front has barely anything left to it!

Latest Met Office 10-day talking about the SSWE and suggesting latest research for the upcoming warming is indicative of a greater chance of SW'lys for the UK! With La Nina it is no surprise that the early direction from the coupling puts the UK away from the cold. I suspect we will learn a bit more from this SSWE as it seems unusual?

As for the 06z gefs, a mixed bag and no real clues away from the overall pattern trend. The op looks like a statistical outlier by d16 (2m temps):

So a run probably to ignore late on.

Excuse my French, but, weeble to that!

Whilst everyone is worrying about the next few days giving us a few snowflakes, (though I for one would love to see it..) we should be looking (wishing) for a cold pool to spill into Europe.

very low heights, slack flow across most of the U.K. and 850s of -3/4c. A lot of good ingredients there for snow to reach low levels. Beyond that, increasing confidence of getting into a better position longer term with consistency across the board of a high latitudes block forming in the very north of the Atlantic.

Out of interest why is the pressure so slack and over such a wide area within this massive LP? Happy Christmas everyone ⛄⛄⛄

  6. Not sure if this belongs here, but on the way home I saw the most amazing bright light zoom across the sky from south to north at 5.35pm, quite close to the ground heading towards the Witney area from Standlake and can only put it down to a meteor the speed it was travelling, before it burnt up? Just wondering if anyone else spotted this, as it certainly made your stomach flutter as to what on earth it was!
