South West/Central Southern England Regional Discussion 14/01/13, 12z onwards

I reckon if I stood on the nearest hill in Newbury and looked west I could probably wave to the system as it sails past our area. -

thanks GTLTW .. Great summary there. On the Wales system at the mo.. Isn't that moving quite quickly in your opinion? It did to me from the radar animation.and which is showing as mainly sleet? -

Ha ha according to channel four news the headline was" snow set to stay for a fortnight" or along those lines... Where do they get their forecasts from ... I ask you a "fortnight". -

well I have a nose into the Wales thread and it is snowing in Cardiff and Hereford. Thick n fast for some. Someone said something about lightning.. Does anyone know how fast this is travelling .. Radar doesn't help bit I just wonder I wonder could this be thunder snow and a front moving fast like we had one January 2005 I think it may have been which swept from Brum? Just a thought.. ?? Probably not but would welcome views. -

Not sure if this has already been reported - but whilst the radar is showing that we should be geting the wet sleet and rain - here in Reading for the past half hour or so it has been falling as heavy - albeit wet snow. Interesting. -

thanks GTLTW .. Missed having you on here last night.. Unless didn't see you amongst the excitement. Question is what will the ppn and the ETA near us be today.. i suspect more wet than the white stuff. The covering we had last this morning came from the band this morning as at 3am three was nothing and only a couple of flakes before midnight blew around in the breeze.Nice to see the model predictions coming true. Can't remember which one was more accurate on last night.. I suspect the ECM. -

Definitely looks to be fizzling out on the radar as it reaches the snow shield that is Newbury... Oh well at least it tried. -

Difficult to say from the radar.. The ppn over you you are getting seems to have just intensified in size over last half hour. Whether it passes or more to come others on this site will probably give a better proposition. If you can it is worth subscribing to the nw extra radar to see the snow progressing. Only about 3.49 per month too. In celebration for you I will pour myself a wee glass . :-) -

Some reports of light snow reported in the Wales discussion thread... Only have mobile so can't see the location in signatures... Anyone else here got any positive sightings of the elusive phenomenon from their lamppost watches yet? ...temps near freezing I believe now at Newbury although GTLTW will have to give better measurement for my area... -
. GTLTW looking southish out of the window seems to be a lot darker than anywhere else. Wonder of this has some hail in it. ...?
-
GTLTW I was going post the same sort of observations about birds. They have been chatting madly this avo by next doors feeders and a cheeky little I think pied wagtail came up to me. And I saw great tit I think as well as a few others. Probably seeking out morcels of food no doubt..
-
Every now and then though GTLTW there is a short burst of large snow flakes. Most odd. If I look out of one window onto the street I can't see it but look out the back gardens and I can.. Good to know about the temps I did think it had dropped in the last hour or so.

Ok peeps every now and there are snow flakes blowing in the ray. Along with some sleet and rain. They were right... Wintry mix! It is very sporadic mind...
