  1. Beautiful blue skies and white hills with snow down to about 350 to 400m. Temperature dropped to 2.9 in school so high 1s in reality and not surprised as there was a moment when it looked like rain was turning to snow. Possibly it did above 100m for a time. And I thought this was going to be nothing but the beginning...we might be in for a treat over the weekend!
  2. Relentless rain and a loss of a full degree which was not forecast so we are at 3.5, probably sensor would read 3 or high 2s. King's Seat is getting a decent snowfall above 400m now yaaay
  3. Yummy chart. Daylight has answered my question, there's nae lying snow at 500m so only place left now are the invisible tops, almost always wearing their greyish cloaks. Still, there is one wee patch-survivor way up on the King's Seat so praying for it to be showered with some snaw later on tonight, even if we get rain/sleet at 2C which is what the MetO forecasts. Looks to me like another sit where upper Dollar will see falling snow and we in the lower parts will see weird-looking rain. Looking forward to Saturday now though, as I said never a dull moment, is there!
  4. Good morning everyone! Cold rain this morning at 4.5C so I am guessing a sensor would be reading high 3s, wondering at what height snow is falling, maybe 500m? Still, I was expecting a bit more from the way they portrayed it on the beebs last night; Glasgow and Edin are dry atm, ppn only affecting South Ayrshire, Dumfries and the Borders. Then there's the wee line, under which I delight myself in being, that runs the breadth and length of the Ochils drawing an arch of yellow tonalities which merge with bluer ones and die out in the sea. Dundee and N of that seem affected by rain too, even the NE bit of land where it never rains (very impressive example of rain shadow as well) is suffering windy pish presumably. Aw love Scotland, I really do, it's always a surprise! Have a good day everyone.
  5. Yes but for you to stay mild we in the "north and west" need to suffer the relentless train of storms, so I'd sooner you'd bear the cross for a bit so that we can enjoy marginal snow. Nah, what we need to see is the infamous train of storms affecting Spain and S France for a while. Good for everyone (bar mildies in Europe)
  6. There's to hoping haha although looks unlikely at my slightly lower altitude. Temperatures are all over the place, from 13 to 3 then up to 12 today now down to 9...and yes we'll see what cracks tomorrow night, maybe a flake or two are not out of the question.
  7. School reading 5.2, sensor has been dusted out and is now reading 3.2 which is more like it, like you guys say. Impressive temp drop as well, very pungent. Glad to see Scotland is cooling off thoroughly but sad to think we have a good lashing of rain on the way tomorrow and another one on Wednesday! EDIT at 20.53: right so that was it in terms of dropping temps, sensor bounced back to 4.1 and skies are getting cloudy again. School touched 5C, now 5.1C.
  8. So the mildest bit of the week seems to have passed, bar Friday now colder air is coming in aided by a gentle breeze (30mph), temp down to 9.5 from 13C at 1pm. How cold will it get on Saturday/Sunday? The ground will be warm though...:(
  9. Not that upset with the models, as ever we seem to be in the relatively good side of things and so might catch some hill snow, starting Wednesday into Thursday and Saturday into Sunday probably down to low levels if it all comes down right. I am off back home to Barcelona for a week between 4th and 13th Feb (bet I will miss out on some fun!), but already looking forward to some longer days and colder times when I get back to Scotland, as it doesn't get much warmer than this. I even slept with the window open, it was roasting! Finally processed the data of the experiment I ran last week, comparing temps between sensors over grass and asphalt surfaces less than half a mile from each other, feel free to have a peek! experiment.xlsx PS, Amazingly enough there are some snow gullies left close to the top of the King's seat. Gives you an idea of the amount of snow that must have been there at one point to survive 48h plus in temps hovering at or above 10C
  10. Aww you just got me all melancholic with your memories of winters long gone. I have not had the pleasure to have lived through them but still a fifth of my twenty-four winters I have spent among you and that leaves a mark. Obviously I am theoretically happy to live around the 55N paralel as my chances of seeing snow increase in theory but practice has proven otherwise. However, I missed out on the last two winters, them being two of the three that I spent in Barcelona in between Liverpool 2008-9 and Edinburgh 2012-3. Having said which I do remember 2008 October being very cold at the end, we even got some falling snow at sea level and then February 2009 baaam. I thought that sort of snowfall was regular at least once a year but experience says that something like that does not happen every winter, let alone in Liverpool. We got a full-on snow cover that lasted for three days, also with more than one day or two of falling snaw in the dickensian framework that drew those Georgian terraced houses. Edinburgh 2012-3 was very, very decent as most can imagine although with me living on Cowgate it was frustating to literally stay on the hole in the middle of town: probably the hottest and most polluted street. Not great for snow cover and so even though we managed a good few falling snow days from December into the end of March (aaah), it only really settled during the first day (with -15 uppers). Figgin' everywhere past the Meadows must have sported six or seven days of snow cover throughout the winter, more in upper Morningside and Oxgangs especially, but clearly the Old Town in itself has an interesting microclimate, from an outside point of view that is. Liverpool 2013-4 does not deserve a mention. That winter is dead meteorologically. So is the tree that was rooted off by the wind and smashed the school gates. Manchester 2014-5...meh. We did get quite a few days of sleet and snow-ish but no real cover stayed for too long, I noticed a real difference with Failsworth and Oldham. There's this lad on the North West forum where I used to hang out, Thunderbolt, in Failsworth and the differences were stark. Oldham got a good 15 days of lying snow at the very least, but of course where Pedro was, by the Royal Infirmary, nothing. Dollar 2015-6 is by far the best although I expected more. Again, I am living in a not too great place for snow within the very Dollar (upper ends of town have had 8 days of snow cover this winter as opposed to 2 down'ere). I also expected more of this colder week or two just gone but oh well. Hollyoaks is on, catch with you later haha
  11. If we are ever at -6C and it rains I might just kill myself tbh. On a more cheerful note, although not particularly, the cold air is saying its adieus. It doesn't feel like we have had a proper cold air snap though, it's just been a run of coldish days since last Wednesday when we missed out on lying snow for a mere 50m. Yes, we did get the cherry on the top which was a snowy Saturday evening but that melted pretty quickly thanks to Sunday/Monday rain, also we have not had a single frost since then (Sat) with temps hovering between 0 and 3 under 8/8 cloud cover skies. Now the Atlantic is back and we all know what that means: 7-12C, incessant rain, wind and maybe a couple of cool days in between fronts. If this is all that winter can offer up here please take me back home to 15C sunny winters and the odd flurry of snow once a year that fills us up with wintry feelings!
  12. Undecidedly at first it has turned to permanent rain throughout the morning but still close to freezing at 1.8 in school 0.9 sensor. This is as super dupere as Scotland gets tbh. Still, as it did snow in the morning and there's still a good bit left lying around I have to count today as a falling/lying snaw day! Not quite happily so though!
  13. Light rain trying to turn to snow atm...still a fair bit lying and freezing temps despite the warmer uppers. T school 0.7C / -0.1C
  14. Yes, an easier chart for beginners would be the 850hpa chart. Basically with that one we'd be in line for some Siberian treats. In regards to this cold spell, up here we have been submerged in a cold dynamic since the 8th of Jan (Central Belt, 45m). Now at its coldest though with some snow cover to cheer things up!
  15. Wait and see indeed. Yr.no are forecasting snow with temperatures hovering around 0C which seems pretty sensible considering that lying snow might help us for that. Temperatures are there at the minute, with 0.5C sensor and 1.5C school, but low dewpoint ensures that snow is keeping really well. Cloudy but relatively luminous skies aided by 3-4cm of snow pastied everywhere (bar middle of roads). The most important thing is that ppn is on its way. Cold air is still very plentiful so we will probably scrap quite a few more cm's worth of a top-up, the higher up you are the better of course but I presume that even Edinburgh could get an inch if situation is wrongly forecast again. That has certainly become the rule as of late.
  16. After almost eight hours, snow seems to have stopped coming down and temperature is up a bit, currently 0.6 school -0.6 sensor. So what are the possibilities for Sunday?
  17. Well done Cheggers, enjoy them! It seems the stally band is collapsing on itself and I thankfully am in the middle which explains why it's still snowing but now the wind has just picked up so something must be up. School is up at -0.2 but humidity has gone down so dp -2.
  18. This snow is expected to continue to fall along a relatively narrow corridor, perhaps only 100 miles wide They did produce something that has verified at least. Snow is falling quite steadfast right now. Metoffice still updating snow symbols lol, it's actually quite impressive how the computer gets there...Sunday night into Monday now showing another snow event hmmm. But knowing them lot it'll all be gone tomorrow haha! Interesting evening out there but wouldn't drive for the world.
  19. 7pm comes and goes and snow is still falling nicely IMBY, it looked like it was stopping a bit before but now it's on again to an extent. Temp school -0.6, guessing sensor will be around -2. There is a very stally river of ppn running over the central belt and it shows no signs of stopping for a bit. We will see... it has been snowing for 6h in total now, I believe we can still scrap another cm or two out of these blessing remnants in the next hour.
  20. So in the south west temperature has been predictably a degree or two above the central belt but sounds like you got more SNOWfall total. Now here ppn is like frozen drizzle and temp is -2.2 sensor and -0.8 school. Wonder if there's some lying snow on the rooftop as it's Saturday night and the heating could be off. That would do a great deal of a favour to measuring a minimum temperature closer to reality. Also the air is very still and there's a nice covering of about 5cm of a powdery-frosty snow that would have been beautiful had there been a bit more. Snow fiestas are being called off for the time being it would seem but what's lying around ain't going anywhere, especially in shady bits. Where's been the deepest snow in Scotland today, anyone knows?
  21. Back bit of ppn rebuilding in the last shot of radar so we might be in for another hour or two worth of light snow. Yes, sorry, I checked the radar again haha There's like 4-5cm outside
  22. Gotta love it when radar says no but the skies say yes!
  23. So happy right now, temperature falling, snow falling and things are all right. -0.7 school -1.9 sensor Not even bothering to check the radar, as they have problems showing snow usually. Checking my window constantly though!! Metoffice don't have a clue of what's been going on tbh but they sure update the snow symbol as hours tick by and snow keeps falling (even though it was forecast to stop at 4pm...HA). Temperature also wrongly forecast by two degrees. Sometimes I feel they're a tad too conservative.
  24. Well done Glaschu! Yet again most if not all models have failed to forecast the extent and the timing of this impressive snowfall which has produced an inch of lying snow in Dollarrr Nothing marginal temperature wise, with the sensor reading -1.5 and school -0.6. This is snow FREEZING on impact as well for a change haha
  25. Nothing here as of yet, though shouldn't be too long according to the radar.
