  1. The wester you are the better that's my take on things. Crazy swings in temperature, now 0.1 / 1.6 thanks to a nagging breeze which feels BALTIC (or as baltic as it gets in my life) haha
  2. Sorry to be a nuisance posting so much but there's excitement to be had with a little experiment every once in a while. Sensor is still plumetting, currently reading -1.1 School is also falling quite quickly for a lousy rooftop, cold air is building up nicely. 2.2C
  3. In Spain we say 'hace un frío de cojones', 'cojones' being a rather offensive word for 'balls' haha. Sensor reading minus temps, which was expected. -0.4. School getting there at 2.8C It just feels like a little heat island going on in that building, thankfully I am away in a rural area lol (I really am under half a mile from it)
  4. Wooo, almost 2C in little over 30 minutes over grass, school is still reading 3º, sensor is down to 0.1 this is turning more interesting than I bargained for.
  5. I guess it would have been a Germanic word, overheard by some Roman traveller, which made it back to the capital and became the term to define that area and peoples...? School 3.4 / Sensor upping its game now, 1.1
  6. According to a quick google search it roots in the Latin word for the inhabitants of near the Baltic sea, the 'Balthaes', and was then incorporated in the English language circa 1600, not surprisingly as some winters around those years must have truly been Baltic. Ahhh the dreammmmm... School finally upping the game at 3.6, sensor has gone in the right direction too, back to 1.8C The sun has finally effed off and the ground's already solid frost, let the fun and games begin for the next 17 hours of cooling. Edit: snow potential downgrade on the metO website. Shall I take that as a good sign? Haha.
  7. Yes but I am sure Scotland only visits them until early December at worst whereas we invoke Baltic weather throughout winter to no avail! School 4.1 / Sensor 2.0 Clearly the rooftop is cooling off...
  8. Well in all fairness ARPEGE was the only model that predicted the fiasco for some areas in the southern Central Belt much to our benefit against every other weather model so I am confident that we might be in for a good covering if ARPEGE thinks so. Temperatures should NOT be an issue this time around. And as for the 'Scottish weather' matter, well at least I can vouch we don't say that in Spanish or Catalan! Sensor 1.8 / School 4.6 (I'm dreading to think that's our 'official' records)
  9. I fail to understand the existence of the word 'baltic' for temperatures that largely go above 0 during the day and barely fall under minus five/ten in most inhabited places, more so in the west coast of Scotland which is as far as you could get from actual baltic weather this side and latitude of the planet xD Sensor 2.2 / School has now peaked at 4.7 interesting...
  10. Why there's a reason why for eight to twelve weeks straight we are the only place above 55N with no snow lying! Grrrrr Dollar's nae doing bad these days, today min was -1.9 at the rooftop so probably -4 / -5 really. Got the sensor back ¡finally! so i might run a wee experiment tonight to contrast the graphs rooftop vs grass, it'll be a good night for it as well. Sparkling sunshine like our John just said on the beebs. Surprising potential for a good snow event on Saturday/Sunday which I would be pleased with. Snaw that fell Wed into Thurs has barely melted after over 13h of direct sunlight. Really having mental orgasms thinking of the effect of Scottish snaw on albedo stuff. That makes cold last longer, so probably if we get a good blanket of say 4 5 inches on sunday cold might last until late midweek easy. We'll see. Current temp 2.9 sensor 4.4 rooftop. Classic.
  11. Beautiful ochils this morning, a very copious amount of snow above 150m but with some patches venturing down to 60-80. Temp has dipped half an hour ago to 0.5 in school wish I had the sensor but there isn't a hard frost, a nagging wind has stopped it from happening,
  12. Happy days, feel like we've just hit the jackpot here with 10mm of sleet/wet snow and if it slides down now we will probably get some more until 1am which is what MetO are thinking. School's temp has actually gone up with the snowfall but humidity has lowered so that the dp has too. It's not too warm though at 1.1 and a dp of -0.5 Weird as the radar isn't showing anything but snow is belting down even at my humble altitude. And also a very wrong forecast for this whole thing but hey that's the best thing about the weather when you're lucky!
  13. Snaw falling at all levels in Dollar but boy 100m in Scotland make a difference! Lying snow from some 100m with a noticeable thickness difference between 100 and 130m (highest houses some 2in). Back down at 45 and you can tell. Rubbbbbbissshhhh. But hey we got loads of ppn and a beautiful covering for the hills in the morning, so looking forward to a clear dawn with lovely viewwsss ahhh lifes sweet! School stat seems to have crashed again, that laptop is super dupere. Sensor was taken back by a teacher today for a wee experiment - which means I cannot know the temp! grrr. but close to 0 presumably.
  14. It does indeed, while I lived on Cowgate a good friend of mine lived in bruntsfield and you could tell a clear difference in frost and lying snow. Speaking of which I am seeing fall cheerily right now. What direction will the front sink though? SE?
  15. Back to 1.3 unfortunately, but ppn denser now. Amazing how these four ppn bands we have had affecting scotland have been quite difficult to forecast.
  16. You think? Last night you did not even know whether ppn would get to your position or if it'd be stalled south of us both, that is looking good to me now, Let temperature just drop away decimal after decimal... PD. Back to drizzly mush, temp at 1.1 now dp 0.3, so dipping ever so further down.
  17. IT'S SNOWING IN DOLLAR (45m), Exciting times. It has been raining since 15.45pm, academy peaking at 2.1 before it started but hills did get the slightest of coverings above 250m. Now it's reading a much healthier 1.4 with a dewpoint of 0.4 Real values on open air though must be ranging around 0.9 and 0, or -0.1 which explains why finally snow has made it thus far down. Long may it continue! PD. 1.3 at the academy. You can be part of my exciting evening on http://dollarweather.co.uk/ Best wishes to everyone, more or less we may get but we are now in a pattern we would have cut our arms for a month ago. Let`s enjoy it!
  18. I am well surprised too to see that ppn is going to be here in no time at all. Temp is 1.5 and dp around 0 so we might just have a chance to see something other than cold rain for a change. If not, at least the hills will get some fresh cover. Yet another badly forecasted band of ppn, I seriously thought it was going to stay south of the Forth, most models projected it to do that and so did the beebs in the morning!
  19. Salti how are we faring for some snow in this corner of Scotland? Also yes, very impressed with the temps that are showing now on MO, clear upgrade from previous days and a great discussion topic at the Weather Club that I am running later on today
  20. We want Arpege! On way to the 4th air frost of the month at the rooftop of the academy, probably there by now over grassed areas. 0.6C and if we miss out tonight or we get cold rain I will not rant I promise haha
  21. I can confirm that in Scotland cold air is already in place, with a clear trend downwards and a nice pasting that fell overnight and into the morning on the Ochil Hills (lying to about 300-400m. Expecting the fourth air frost tonight, how well we do is entirely up to clear skies as the -4 upper will arrive shortly and that guarantees some frost if nothing else. Looking ahead i don't think IMBY we do great snow-wise although I guess with the whole volatility of the situation I am in for a surprise or two. *** what I expect : A blend between the ukmo and ecm, cold for a week then a battleground synario followed by a even colder plunge.. That sentence sums up the whole feeling that I have got going on about this sit...let's see how events unfold! Fascinating times though
  22. Cannot help but feel this is a massive waste of ppn, you'll see how we're effin bone dry when snow could be falling!!! 15mm already and temp falling slighty to 3.5C, so as soon as I step outta the house it will feel FREEZING and WET. That's the UK for you. Also it's that fateful time of the year when we are the ONLY place in the world above 55ºN where there isn't some extensive snow cover. The f____ing marvels of the Gulf Stream I guess... Looking forward to some clear skies tonight and a bit of frost to be honest! Have a good day everyone.
  23. Morning everyone! On reflection, the last few (first) days of the year have seen a progressive normalisation of sorts, averaging 4.4C. Ppn still trending above average, with 87mm so far in 8 out of 11 days although that might change if we catch a shower or two later. 3 air frosts, which again is more in line with the average of 12-17, also there are no 'borderline' actual air frost days (when rooftop might not fall under 2 but you actually dip to -0. or below). 1.3 yesterday, yes, but whilst a sleet shower and as soon as it stopped temp went up again. I feel the weather hasn't delivered properly so far for this wee county of Scotland, even though you'd think that with the Ochils and that it would do better. The'Ochs probably do much better on more eastern and northern slopes, which is easy to see on a day out. Still in my humbly un-snowy daily reality, both in Barcelona and Liverpool-Manchester, Dollar is the best I've ever had on a daily basis so I can hardly complain. As we speak I can see the top of the King's Seat sporting a healthy cover of snow. Attached is a pic of the sort of day coldies live for, especially when inhabiting Barcelona's metro area. I was on the lilac spot. 24h's worth of snow in higher places, probably 8-9 in lower areas of Barcelona. Still the beach recorded lying snow. The town where my mum lives is thankfully at 300m asl so we did really well compared to some other lower-lying areas like my uni, 10mi down at 120m. It took me two hours to get home though, the whole public transport system was falling to pieces at around 12pm and collapsed at 15pm. Lucky that I did get home nonetheless as the storm got much freakier at 14pm or so and it just belted down for the best part of three hours. It was like one of our storms but with snow and temperatures that fell as much as -2 with heavy ppn. Overnight the white stuff melted in towns and cities of metro, but there were snow patches going in rural places for a week after that as well as the tops of the hills (1100m / 1700m) that we can see from some areas outside BCN city. Got a day off uni (yay!) and had the best time ever with pals at the 'parc/parque'. As you can see though the inner lower parts of Catalunya and indeed Aragon to our west did not get any ppn out of the low pressure system, the border of it drawing very neatly on the chart. For the central depression and the Ebro valley it was another cold day with dry NW's that the river canalises (the infamous mestral that ravages trees and stuff on a usual basis.) Down there anyway in winter it's either that or thick fog for weeks, which is when they record max of 0-2, sometimes lower than that. 8th March 2010, a day to remember.
  24. So here we have had a min. temp in the morning of 1.3 in the morning, shortly before a heavy sleet fell but that was it, well the hills had the slightest of coverings from 150m. Throughout the day temps have gone up to about 3C, now we are at 2.7 on the rooftop so probably its 2C real and theres a bit of ppn around but nothing major still. Went on a wee walk before towards Whitewisp Hill, featured in pic 1. When I left Castle Road at 170m there was a thick fog hanging around and so I got to the crossroads that either takes you to nowhere, and to Glen Devon following two different ways in 3. Snow cover started shortly before there and was patchy in nature, as you can see not even the top of the hills looks pastied in any case. I eventually came out of the cloud, sensor read 0.8 at 330m high and a healthier snow cover. On coming back beautiful landscapes amidst the clouds, with the King's Seat (645m) and Dollar Hill as protagonists.
  25. Someone must be doing really well right now, here cold and damp at 2.6C and with that band of ppn stalled south of Edinburgh-Glasgow.
