  1. Winter 1950/51 This was probably the worst winter of the 20th century on Britain's more upland areas. At Braemar there was snow cover on 103 mornings, many more than the notorious winter of 1947 . pM air was frequent during the winter with rain, sleet and wet snow common at lower levels, but with a high lapse-rate only snow occured on the higher ground. Depressions which passed over or near the UK moved very quickly so that the warm-sector air did not have enough time to thaw lying snow before colder air and more snow arrived. Cross Fell was not clear of snow until the 10th of July! More soon.
  2. Woke up to a slight cover of snow here in Aberdeen this morning - also been a few flurries since.
  3. After some wet snowfalls earlier this morning, the lying snow has all but thawed in Aberdeen and we are no experiencing a mixture of rain and hail showers. Snow mainly confined to high ground above 800 feet (250m) today.
  4. Rain/Sleet here in Aberdeen - i thought we would at least get snow AM before turning less cold PM. Slow thaw in process.
  5. The snow has now arrived in Aberdeen! 11:00am Light/Moderate snow showers, expected to increase in frequency and perhaps become heavier as day progresses. Nothing settling yet - i'd expect lying snow around late afternoon.
  6. ABERDEEN : 33m asl 3°C Windy NW'ly Not quite cold enough for snow yet - give it til around 2.00pm
  7. On the Morning of November 16th, courtesy of Scottish Kierdog, here a picture of Ben Wyvis (1046m) http://www.winterhighland.info/forums/file.php?2,file=348
  8. ABERDEEN CITY CENTRE Wet snow shower, combined with hail at 12.15am last night. Just sleety/rain showers so far today.
  9. That's better than what i can report Don. ABERDEEN 2°C Rain/Sleet showers with occasional hail.
  10. Wind beginning to pick up - but from a westerly direction! Around 4.5°C with a few spits in the wind. Cold wind but still doesn't have enough 'bite' for me yet to produce snow.
  11. Turned overcast since midday, some light showers now. 7°C but that's down from midday. A snow event this evening may now be more marginal, IMO.
  12. ABERDEEN 6°C Sunny Light WNW winds Feeling cold! At this rate, snow may just about be on the cards for tonight
  13. Good stuff Viking - keep up the updates! Still quite balmy here although the wind is picking up but not to the extent of Lerwick! Currently 14°C but obviously feeling cooler in the breeze now. http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-bin/akt...x&SORT=2&INT=24
  14. Thanks Mr Data, I knew it was quite severe but for snow to fall for 23/31 days is quite astonishing!
  15. Coming from the North East of Scotland this month is of particular interest to me. However, since I was only 6 months old I never actually witnessed it for myself. Evidently, this was a very northerly month which usually means Northern and Eastern areas are worst affected by snow. I was wondering if anyone has snow totals for Aberdeen during this month, or indeed any other stats for NE Scotland during this bitter month? Regards Clark
  16. Great post Mike - I find it amazing that sea ice could possibly form around the UK! . I wonder how this blizzard compares to the snows of Christmas 1995????????
  17. In fact, during daytime, snow lies/stays a lot easier during November than it does during daytime in March.
  18. More positive news this morning regarding the SST's - the -ve anomalies around the southern coast of Greenland have spread marginally further south into the Atlantic which should push the jet further south. This is backed up by a more positive GFS run this morning promoting a cold pM by the weekend and possibly into next week although that is into FI territory.
  19. The cold pools to our north are more widespread again although the low is now down to -1.2°C - it was much lower a few weeks back. However, the rogue warm pool off the east coast of Greenland has, in turn, cooled. Looks like the cold and warm pools are balancing each other out in that area.
  20. It's rare for snow NOT to lie at some point during November in Aberdeen.
  21. As you can see from today's chart, that cold anomaly to the north has shrunk Sorry as you can see from Summer Blizzards post 3 posts up!
  22. Was just looking at that chart myself and noticed that SST's are around 0°C half way between Greenland and Iceland (2.5°C just off the NE coast of Iceland). What are the chances of Sea ice forming between the two islands at some point this winter and has this happened before? Last week there seemed to be Sea ice starting to form in Svalbard. http://www.nilu.no/onlinebilder/zeppelin/zeppelin.jpg
  23. Thanks for that analysis TWS. Obviously whilst checking the archive sypnotics, I generally foccused on the weather Aberdeen experienced and as you say NE Scotland was one of the more colder and snowier areas that winter.
  24. This winter must surely be regarded as a cold, if not severe one - especially December 1993. There was an article in our local paper tonight contrasting the mild of this October to the blizzards of mid October 1993 which affected much of northern Scotland (i'd appreciate any worthy stats for that cold snap). In addition, it mentioned a cold December which included a white Christmas and heavy snow on Hogmanay causing chaos to New Year celebrations. Much is made of December 1981 but after having a look at the GFS archive, December 1993 must've been just as cold - at least for Scotland. (January also looked a very cold month!) Again, i'd be grateful to anyone willing to contribute stats/figures relating to this winter. Regards Clark
  25. Not certain about this but it looks as if Sea ice is now starting to form around Svalbard. http://www.nilu.no/onlinebilder/zeppelin/zeppelin.jpg
