I had perfectly clear skies in Aberdeen, but only looked for about a minute into western skies and saw nothing...however I had just come back from town and was very drunk!
Perhaps so, but it was by far the most accurate compared to several other Winter Forecasts I read last year. Apart from a snowy second half of January (which didn't materialize) he was very accurate.
Interesting. I sometimes wonder how forecasteres can predict 'Blizzard Conditions' or 'Drifting Snow'. How are they distinguished when both occur when it's snowing in strong winds?
Has anyone seen Ken Ring's Winter forecast yet.? I've had a look at his website which only gives brief details (generally mild with snow between 31st Dec and 9th Jan). But he normally produces a more detailed forecast which seemed to be fairly accuate last year.
We're down to 7°, pleased to report hail which is now mixed with the rain showers, strong, biting Northerly wind.
Lying snow level currently around 800m and lowering fast.
I'm surprised the US Meteorologist only mentions 'snow flurries' for the Chicago area. Surely if these arctic winds sweep down across the Great lakes that would produce some severe heavy snowfalls due to the sheer warmth of the Great Lakes at this time of year? Lake effect snow at it's most severe I would've thought?
It has often been said that a cold October leads to a mild winter with little snow, and so it proved in 2002. For the first time in a long time Cairngorm ski resort opened for business in October before going on to suffer one of it's worst ever seasons. Here are some shots of the snowy October conditions at Cairngorm that year.
So perhaps it's best to see more of mild weather this month!
Interesting contrast there Mr Data. The earliest snow that I have witnessed in Aberdeen was on the 3rd of October 1994 - there was blizzard conditions throughout the day but no lying snow in the city centre. I could be wrong but I think the max temperature that day was just 7° in Aberdeen.
And last winter was a perfect example of that - stubborn high pressure in the right area producing sharp overnight frosts with temperatures struggling to recover through the day. Great conditions for low CET values but quite poor for snow potential.
Well July was the best ever on record here in Aberdeen with a new record high too. August has been quite disapointing but we can't complain afetr what July offered!
Yeah very impressive start to the day waking up to that snow this morning with continuing moderate/heavy snow showers throughout the morning. Steadily became clearer PM.
