  1. Your in for a treat this week! Keep us updated on the conditions at Ballater - despite a possible milder few days on Tuesday and Wednesday that will not affect Ballater and I expect some signifiant accumulations there by the weekend.
  2. It's been dry here for sevweral hours now, still overcast and still to see the first flurry. -10° 850T is projected to make landfall around 6pm, should definitely see some flurries by then I'd imagine.
  3. Despite my comments above, the latest BBC News 24 forecast seemed to suggest snow for the east coast into Tuesday! Mind you, with these modern BBC graphics who knows what kind of weather you supposed to get - bring back the bloody symbols for goodness sakes!
  4. Yeah, easterlies never provide much excitement for Aberdeen which I know surprises a lot of people. Stonehaven all the way to Berwick are the best locations for snow and I you say, I think rain and sleet is all we are going to get from Monday night onwards. That -10 850T on Sunday night / Monday morning (snow) is replaced by -5 850T on Tue/Wed which is not good enough for Aberdeen city.
  5. Carrbridge is colder than Aviemore simply due to altitude - Aviemore 228m, Carrbridge 271m. I would not of thought of Inverness as the coldest - The Moray and Cromarty Firth keeps coastal areas in that region generally mild.
  6. I've seen those pictures too - We will not see 10 foot drifts in Union Street for many years/decades yet. The heat from the buildings, all the car and people activity and it's sea level altitude mean a repeat of that is nigh on impossible these days. Still possible up Northfield, Hazlehead way though around the 140m mark, 5 miles away from the sea's influence..
  7. A curse of the even larger teapot...it's been sub zero on the Cairgorm ski slopes since mid November, however after just one mild day (Tuesday), the Cairngorm webcam shows patches of heather and broken runs.
  8. Stopped at the Lecht Ski Centre for an hour today at 1pm (637m) - light rain/sleet, 1°C. Temperature was 7°C in Aberdeen city centre so we can work out a temperature/altitude ratio of 1°C per 100M.
  9. That first picture on in the Nevis link is so spectacular I've set it as my background on my computer.
  10. It wasn't drizzle. I also have 8" in my back garden - not bad for 33m asl in November! The forecast said the snow would gradually turn to rain later but it stayed as snow right through. This cold snap has produced more snow than i expected so a great start to the season.
  11. Yeah, i have about 5" in Aberdeen city too. Thought the snow showers would've died out by now but just had another hefty one as you will have seen if you were watching the Rugby on BBC1 earlier. No thaw at all today except in the brief sunny intervals - sun now down so snow settlimg on all surfaces again - Christmas Card scene outside my window just now - hopefully a fwe more inches to the cover before the thaw tomorrow
  12. Check out the live blizzard in NE Iceland. http://157.157.90.210/view/index.shtml
  13. We'll have to brace ourselves for the blow torch fohn tomorrow...
  14. Yes, snow now appearing also at Slochd (406m) and the Rannoch Moor area on the A82 (340m).Biting wind in Aberdeen at the moment, I'd say the snowfall level is around 150-200m at the moment. Would have to be lucky to see any showers coming across the mountains into this area though.
  15. That 'kink' around June is interesting - well spotted. I can't psossibly think as to why the trend is reversed around that time?
  16. Has sea ice ever merged Greenland and Iceland together?
  17. Was it an easterly that produced this snow??? If it was then that is strange.
  18. Incredible event that blizzard of September 1976 on the Cairngorms. Check the chart - this is death conditions in the hills!
  19. Coming back from Elgin this afternoon, drove through a snow shower in Keith - didn't lie though.
  20. That road gets to around 235m at it's highest point and gien how cold it feels in Aberdeen at the moment, sleet doesn't surprise me.
  21. Interesting that this, the daddy of all snow patches, appears to be in sunlight in that photo which brings into question whether this is really a north-east facing coire???
  22. Thanks again Firefly. I think the story about the A939 (a road I know very well) being blocked is untrue, not only because at 637m it is nearly half the altitude of of the peaks of the Cairngorms, but because the chart archive of this date does not indicate any real cold
  23. Thanks for the updates Firefly. What direction are all these snow patches facing? I'd imagine all would be between east and north facing slopes although the patches on Bevin Nevis, judging by your attachments in the previous post looked to be on southern facing slopes??!! Or did i not look close enough? Surely not? PS It snowed in Aberdeen on 2nd October 1994 at sea level so snow even in August is possible in the Cairngorms.
  24. It was a truly miserable month in Aberdeen - just like last summer and similar to last year. All the local golf courses are green, lush and most of the time damp, just like last year. The grass should be burnt yellow at this time of year.
  25. The snowfall level must of been pretty close to the summits PM today as the temperature was only 10.5° in Aberdeen at 1700hrs in very heavy rain. I'd be interested to know if there were any fresh deposits? I could even see my own breath outside not long ago.
