  1. It seems the past 2 months or so have been fairly cool in North East Scotland which should help snow patch retention. However there has been no real cold snaps to increase snow depths in these favoured north east facing corries. The colder weather this week is ideal - Polar Maratime winds encoacing from a SW'ly direction really piles up the snow in these snow patch locations. Overall, I would not expect to see as many survivals this year as last but much depends on Summer and Autumn of course - humid, damp conditions would really thow a spanner in the works. The first Saturday in July (Braemar golf day) i can see how much snow there is on the hills looking WNW - last year there was still a considerable amount of snow on the main peak i could see (maybe Beinn Bhreac or South Top)
  2. Yes, the fohn effect is very significant for Aberdeen - I remember playing golf in a polo shirt in January about maybe 10 years ago and also this effect explains why Aberdeen can reach summer maximums in excess of 79°F.
  3. The snow is hanging on in there in my back garden, can start to see the grass now. If we make it until tomorrow, it will be 17 consecutive days of lying snow in Aberdeen - everyday in February. Quite remarkable. I would like to know what the record is for the number of consecutive days of snow lying in Aberdeen.
  4. Absolutely LadyP - the wind has swung round to more of a northerly as I can see the clouds are moving in a southerly direction now. We definitely missed ou last night - another 20 miles further north and we would've added another inch or 2 to deep cover we already have. I make this the 11th consecutive day of lying snow in Aberdeen (everyday in February) and snow has fallen in at least 10 of those days - remarkable!
  5. We've had Snow Buntings in the back garden yesterday and today!
  6. What do you see just outside radar range? That's the snow off - 15 minute light then moderate snow shower - I was hoping for better at 4.30.
  7. The first flurries have started in Aberdeen - the heaviest part of his band is just going to skirt past to the north although i think we'll till get 3-4 cms in the nxt 2 hours
  8. Snow showers now brewing off the coast to the North East of Aberdeen. We might be lucky in he next hour or so...
  9. -12°C in Aberdeen this morning - coldest February temperature since 1986. Didn't quite make the record of -16°C which was on the 27th December 1995. 15" of snow in the north west of the city anf that will increase to around 20" by next weekend after 3 days of northerly winds. Just seen the GFS 12z run - the block pushes the Atlantic wind back and a north-easterlt re-establishes itself! Not building my hopes up as the ECM doesn' go for this and I find it more accurate - we will see.
  10. Those showers offshore have merged together - looks moderate to heavy too. Pity we missed them - would've added another inch or 2!
  11. I know - I'm getting spoiled! We now have 15" in the west part of Aberdeen - much less than where i am n the city centre - I think that total will top 20" by Friday.
  12. If i didn't have access to a weather radar I'd be really confident that it's going to snow lightly in the next half hour - becoming more overcast all the time. I don't think the main band will reach us however Shuggee has just mentioned eastern Scotland, probably Edinburgh though
  13. Yes, I'm surprised by how overcast it's getting - looks like it's going to snow, although i know it won't as there's nothing on the radar.
  14. Just back from visiting my grandparents who stay in Mastrick - there is over a foot of snow there - couldn't believe it when i got there! 120m
  15. I know - I just seen that. Pathetic isn't it. Blizzards here overnight, higher level routes blocked, but no, an icy pavement in England is more important. Remember, it's only us Scots.
  16. I'm Irvine Place, no far. I think the reason for the slightly less cold air is the closeness of the low which is lying just off the coast. The centre of a low always hold a pocket of milder air. Met Office has it back down to 1.1°c now
  17. 3-4" per hour is very heavy snow, Bob. Is it windy too? Look north Richard - more cumio nimbus - it's just started here and I'm getting hail!
  18. I honestly think the next shower in Aberdeen will fall as rain or sleet! Roofs are dripping which is not a good sign!
  19. Good and Bad news for snow fans in Aberdeen. The bad news is the temperature has now increased to 1.3°C from 0.6°C early afternoon. The good news is on the BBC Forecast at 6.30, the forecast indicated snow showers tomorrow morning becoming more organised to produce a longer period of snow just like today, but the snow activity would become less frequent into the aftenoon but I'm not sure about that.
  20. So this afternoon's heavy snow was the tale of a polar low!? I am noticing how the showers are spiraling around a 'low' in the north sea. Two amazing snow events lasting 2 hours in the past days in Aberdeen. What do you reckon for this evening?
  21. Yes but people in Aberdeen did not expect to wake up to blanket of snow this morning. It's all very marginal but -5° 850's are not what you want to have on low ground. The current patchy snow cover and more broken cloud should encourage tempratures to fall more though.
  22. Seems this warning applies away from the coast! What time do you expect the northerly to kick in? A more positive note th temperature seems to be dropping now - 1600 was 2.0°, 1700 was 1.6°, 1800 1.5° - hope this trend continues - hault the slow thaw and these showers can turn to snow.
  23. Be patient, the snow will develop through the night and tomorrow. Rain will fall here in Aberdeen but it will stay as snow in Ballater.
  24. We've had no lying snow so far in Aberdeen, only occasional ice pellets, so yet again my header comment at the bottom of my posts is proved to be correct - Easterlies NEVER produce in a even larger teapot! Some good snow to come Thu/Fri though, I'll look forward to that - hopefully the centre of the low will move closer to Scandinavia as these lows always hold a pocket of milder air.
  25. Yes it wil turn to rain in Aberdeen, but not Ballater.
